- Poem: "My Ghosts" by Verna Cole Mitchell
My Ghosts by Verna Cole Mitchell They climb down from the ceiling. They dance along the walls. They peer in through the windows. They tiptoe through the halls. While some have voices muted, Some talk too noisily. While some words they speak sadly, Some they shout out with glee. They come into the dining room For meals around the table. They snack while going through the house Whenever they are able. I even find them sleeping In cradle or in bed. They also sprawl on couches Or on the floor instead. They sit and play Monopoly And other kinds of games. Although they’re not permitted to, They call each other names. They run on Christmas morning, Excitedly with joy, To see if Santa came last night And brought a special toy. They gather all together For family devotions. They share their hopes and fears and dreams With varying emotions. When I try to hold on to them, They sometimes glide away. I fear that as years pass me by, They’ll slowly fade to gray. They aren’t ordinary ghosts, But ghosts of memory, My little children growing up— So dear they are to me. Find Verna Cole Mitchell's books of poetry on Amazon . #Poetry #ThePoetsNook

- A Reader's Opinion: SINCE ALL IS PASSING by Elizabeth Delisi
THE BOOK Marie was the child's only hope. A READER'S OPINION No brakes allowed on this ride! Since All Is Passing has you going at full throttle with no sign of slowing down. So much happens in the first few pages and chapters: accidents, death, and kidnappings. "Oh, my!" I devoured this book, and I'm chomping at the bits to read more from Elizabeth Delisi. Even though the story deals with heavy topics such as, death, grief, kidnapping, being a victim, etc., Ms. Delisi adds little touches of humor that jump out and surprise you. The humor lightens what could be a very dark and grim story. You mainly find the humor in the witty banter between Marie and Officer Chris. Officer Chris is a handsome, protective, and caring man with a great work ethic. Chris's determination at work does cause some conflict between him and Marie, but that is all thrown out the window when he realizes she's in danger. Marie is a little broken down by life and grief, but she is a strong, funny, and do-right woman. Marie's convictions to do the right thing are the reason she ends up on a one-woman rescue mission to save a kidnapped child. I loved the blossoming relationship between Marie and Chris. It was a light in the center of a grief-stricken black hole. The story is clean, but beware! There are a couple of scenes where the bad guy tries to hurt Marie, but they're not too graphic. The ending had me sighing with relief and happiness that the horror was over and new beginnings could be seen in the horizon. Since All Is Passing will delight those who love a smidgen of romance with their fast-paced, suspenseful thrillers! - A Reader's Opinion: THE VIRGIN AND THE WIND ROSE by Glen Craney
THE BOOK A Christopher Columbus Mystery-Thriller A READER'S OPINION A thought-provoking and clever mystery, The Virgin and the Wind Rose , was not at all what I expected. It was better. Jacqueline Quartermane finds a magical puzzle of sorts in a church while investigating the death of someone close to her. Discovering this clue makes her a target in a dangerous game of intrigue and faith mixed with thieves and killers. This book is intense, and I don't even know where to start without giving anything away. The author obviously did a lot of thorough research and I found myself fascinated with the many twists and turns in the parallel worlds. There are two very different time periods that somehow exist in one book as if they both belonged. The sometimes far-fetched adventures have a touch of Indiana Jones, which made for an exciting ride, but I felt like there was enough story to go into a second book. You definitely have to pay attention. With a clever plot and plenty of intrigue, the authors keeps you guessing in this fascinating page-turner. Jaqueline's evangelical faith is tested when she thrown together with a roguish antiquities thief named Elymas, a Jewish atheist. Together they race the Mahdi imposter to find the one relic needed to resurrect Solomon’s Temple. A trail of cabalistic clues leads them to the catacombs of Rome, the crypt below Chartres Cathedral, a Masonic shaft in Nova Scotia, a Portuguese shipwreck off Sumatra, and the caverns under the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Intertwined with this modern mystery-thriller, a parallel duel is waged: The year is 1452. One of the most secretive societies in history, Portugal's Order of Christ, is led by a reclusive visionary, Prince Henry the Navigator. He and his medieval version of NASA merged with the CIA scheme to foil their archenemies, the Inquisitor Torquemada and Queen Isabella of Castile, who plan to bring back Christ for the Last Judgment by ridding the world of Jews, heretics, and unbelievers. Amazon | B&N | BAM! | IndieBound | Bookshop | Large Print | Add to Goodreads Enjoy an Excerpt from Journey to Hawk's Peak From Chapter One Hawk’s Peak, Montana Territory—May 1884 A HAWK AND ITS mate soared high above their heads. White clouds tipped with gray created a continuous patchwork in the vast, blue sky, casting shadows over the snow-capped mountains. A cool, spring breeze caressed Amanda’s face and whipped her unbound hair over her shoulders. She’d left the house wearing only a shawl, preferring to relish in the warmer air after the long, harsh season. The winter of ’84 had been one of the coldest in Amanda’s memory. Although it had been her first in Montana, she was no stranger to the hardships of the western frontier. No matter how settled the land became or how many people from the East ventured in search of the same dreams which brought her parents west, she loved the wildness the land fought to retain. “I’ll never tire of this sight.” Not a soul within one hundred miles could miss the grand mountain ranges that crisscrossed the land and protected their valley. “I won’t either.” Brenna wore a heavier wool shawl, the edges gathered over her growing belly. Amanda smiled at her friend—one of many she’d made since arriving at Hawk’s Peak—and imagined Brenna as a new mother once again. Brenna and Ethan Gallagher already had one son, Jacob, named after Ethan’s father and born in Scotland, Brenna’s homeland. The courage to leave behind everything and everyone she knew at Cameron Manor to journey across an ocean and vast continent impressed Amanda. She’d embarked on her own journey when she left home, but it compared nothing to what Brenna must have experienced. Brenna stopped at a point in the meadow and bent over to pick a few sprigs of wild lupine and add them to the basket she carried over one arm. Calves frolicked in the nearby pastures, another sign that spring had come regardless of winter’s efforts to linger. In her lyrical voice with her refined Scottish accent, Brenna said, “When I first stepped foot off the stage, the sheer enormity of what I’d done paled in comparison to the beauty of these mountains. I abhorred the circumstances that forced me to flee, and yet without those trials, I wouldn’t be here now. I wouldn’t have Ethan or Jacob.” She patted her belly and smiled. “Or this one.” “I envy you, Brenna.” Amanda continued walking, but it was Brenna who stopped, surprised by the quietly spoken words. “What a dear thing for you to say, but there are many who could say the same of you.” Amanda was quick to assure Brenna. “Please, don’t think me ungrateful for what I have. I’ve been blessed many times over in my life. I envy the way you approach life, every day with such hope.” “It got me into trouble often as a child,” Brenna said with a smile. “Give yourself time. I often feel as though you’ve always been a part of our lives, but it wasn’t so long ago when you arrived.” Amanda stared across the quiet meadow, fixated on the swaying grass. “Before you met Ethan, did you ever . . .” “Did I ever what?” Brenna asked. “You may ask me anything, and I’ll answer if I can.” “Did you ever wonder if you were strong enough to live the life you always wanted?” End of Excerpt. - A Reader's Opinion: WICKED HIGHLAND WISHES by Julie Johnstone
THE BOOK Highlander Vows: Entangled Hearts, Book 2 A READER'S OPINION Can a legendary warrior and strong-willed young woman find the love they deserve? Julie Johnstone has a talent for blending passion, terror and hope into one story. Lachlan MacLeod is an honorable and fierce warrior who is brought to his knees in love with Bridgette but there are forces keeping them apart. Bridgette is young and independent and her bravado gets her into trouble. She wants to be treated equal to a man but Lachlan is the only one who seems to believe she is capable. Family honor and obligations "force" Lachlan and Bridgette to make decisions they may regret. This is book two but I did not feel like I came in the middle of a story, which I appreciated. I did feel like many of the decisions the characters had to face could have been avoided. The author touches on a delicate and difficult subject that is not often found or liked in a romance novel but I thought she did well with it. My only complaint about the incident is the timing, which took away from the happily-ever-after feeling I wanted so much. I will say that in the end, Lachlan remained my favorite character in this story. However, it is impossible to give what belongs to another… Torn between their own desire and their loyalties, Bridgette and Lachlan must find the courage to grasp the passion awaiting them and face the pain their choice will cause. - A Reader's Opinion: TENDER TOUCH by Charlene Raddon
THE BOOK A READER'S OPINION Readers of western romance will enjoy Tender Touch . This is the first book I've read by the author and I wasn't disappointed in the time I spent with Brianna and Columbus. Brianna Wight escaped a horrible situation with success and now she must flee, but she can't do it by herself. Enters Columbus Nigh, a mountain man turned guide, with his own tragedies. He isn't what I expected from a typical western romance hero but this character had interesting depths to explore. Brianna's personality proved difficult from time to time but there was a reason for her behavior and I found myself sympathetic toward her plights. The author is very descriptive when it comes to the era and landscape whether good or unpleasant. - A Reader's Opinion: MAKE ME LOVE YOU by Johanna Lindsey
THE BOOK A READER'S OPINION It goes without saying that Johanna Lindsey knows how to deliver a happily ever after . . . she just takes her time doing it which makes for an interesting and enjoyable story. Make Me Love You is sure to make you smile and fall in love! Brooke Whitworth is no mindless chit, and she certainly is willing to let a hard-headed lord stand in the way of their happiness. Dominic Wolfe is just as determined to make sure nothing comes of what he believes to be an insulting and ridiculous order, and his primary goal is to scare Brooke away . . . Except plans have a way of going topsy-turvy when least expected. I'll admit that it's not quite up to par with her Malory series or even most of her western romances, but once I stopped comparing this to her earlier works, I found myself enjoying the book immensely! With witty dialogue, endearing characters, wonderful chemistry, and enough verbal sparring to make you smile, laugh, and want to join the conversation, Make Me Love You is a win for Johanna Lindsey and readers of historical romance.
