- A Reader's Opinion: A SCARLET WOMAN by Lorna Peel
A READER'S OPINION A powerful Irish love story! The moment I saw the cover of Lorna Peel's novel, A SCARLET WOMAN, I knew I had to read it. Ms. Peel is a new-to-me author and she didn't disappoint with this fabulous tale set in Ireland. She nicely blended her characters and Irish history together to create a captivating love story. I really enjoyed this introduction to the Fitzgeralds of Dublin series; what a beautiful surprise! I simply could not put it down and I will surely watch for her next novel. Set in Dublin, Ireland in 1880, A SCARLET WOMAN tells the heart warming and touching story of Dr. Will Fitzgerald and Isobel Stevens, two beautiful souls trying to escape a difficult journey of ups and downs. Will left his father's medical practice to offer his help in the Liberties, a poverty-stricken area of Dublin. Isobel is a sweet young woman abused by the men in the past and who had to work in a brothel if she wanted to survive. Then one day, Will, the doctor, and Isobel, a scarlet woman, meet and their lives will forever change for the best. Upon Will's advice, Isobel finds work as a parlour maid where she is happier, but still very much afraid of getting hurt again. Still, they correspond by letters and their new friendship evolves to a loving and caring relationship. However, a series of dramatic events will occur and disrupt their lives. Can their fragile love survive? Is it strong enough to give them a second chance? Will and Isobel are so beautiful together that I could not help myself from loving them and wishing them all the happiness in the world. Yes, I'm a romantic! I'm so glad to have discovered this author! I love her style of writing, and her words flow off the pages and ignite the imagination. A SCARLET WOMAN is a real page turner, and I have no doubt that lovers of Irish tales will adore this story! - A Reader's Opinion: SWEETBRIAR COTTAGE by Denise Hunter
A READER'S OPINION SWEETBRIAR COTTAGE is a heartwarming story about the power of forgiveness and second chances. Noah Mitchell thought his marriage to Josephine had ended until he receives a surprise letter from the IRS. Just like in real life, the IRS rarely brings good news, and Noah discovers that he's still married. When faced with having to see and talk to Josephine again, Noah's quiet life of seclusion is turned upside down. Josephine made her share of mistakes, and she doesn't blame Noah for ending their marriage, but what happens when two people torn apart by betrayal still love each other? Josephine promises to fix the issue and drives to Noah's mountain ranch to deliver the new paperwork for his signature. She should have checked the weather more closely! Patience, love, trust, and hope are tested when Noah and Josephine find themselves stuck during the storm. I don't know if the author meant to have a parallel between the weather and their turbulent relationship, but that's what I got out of it. I felt for both characters as they struggled with their own feelings. I don't often read Christian romance, and this is the first book I've enjoyed by Denise Hunter, but I plan to read more. The author has a very nice writing style that draws you into the story and makes you feel the characters experiences. There is a powerful message of forgiveness in SWEETBRIAR COTTAGE. Noah is a kinder person than I think I could have been in the same situation, but that really made me like him so much more. Following his divorce, Noah gave up his dream job, settling at a remote horse ranch in the Blue Ridge Mountains of northern Georgia, putting much-needed distance between himself and the former love of his life. But then Noah gets a letter from the IRS claiming he and Josephine are still married. When he confronts Josephine for the first time in months, they discover that she missed the final step in filing the paperwork and they are, in fact, still married. Josephine is no happier about the news than Noah. Maybe the failed marriage--and okay, the botched divorce--was her fault, but her heart was shattered right alongside his, more than he would ever believe. The sooner they put this marriage behind them, the better for both of their sakes. But when Josephine delivers the final paperwork to his ranch, the two become stranded in his cottage during the worst spring snowstorm in a decade. Being trapped with Josephine is a test of Noah's endurance. He wrestles with resentment and an unmistakable pull to his wife--still beautiful, still brave, and still more intriguing than any woman he's ever known. As they find themselves confronted with each other and their shared past, old wounds surface and tempers flare. But when they are forced out into the storm, they must rely on each other in a way they never have before. Josephine finally opens up about her tragic past, and Noah realizes she's never been loved unconditionally by anyone--including him. Will Noah accept the challenge to pursue Josephine's heart? - A Reader's Opinion: WHEN A LADY DARES by Tara Kingston
A READER'S OPINION A delightful historical romance with a touch of intrigue! Sophie Atherton is a secret operative for the British Crown, and she's very good at what she does . . . or thinks she is! Archaeologist Gavin Stanwyck quickly sees through Sophie's game, but he doesn't know if she's an innocent pawn or if there is a greater scheme at work. Sophie is a woman far ahead of the times with her independence and unorthodox work, yet beneath her smarts and bravado is a woman like any other who just wants to be loved, even if she doesn't know it. Gavin is a charming hero in this book. He's not a typical scholar from outside appearances, and when he and Sophie are thrust together by circumstances, he does his best to give her everything he can . . . except his heart. The real joy in this book is the banter between Sophie and Gavin. The dialogue is snappy and the course of events is enjoyable and fast-paced. It was nice to have a story with both a strong, independent heroine and a touch of the paranormal in the form of psychics and mediums. It made for an enjoyable read. There's more romance than mystery, yet plenty of both to keep the reader engaged. - A Reader's Opinion: SERENITY HARBOR by RaeAnne Thayne
A READER'S OPINION A charming and heartwarming small-town romance! Set in the fictional town of Haven Point, SERENITY HARBOR gives the reader a true glimpse into small-town life with a lot of charm and plenty of tender moments. Bowie Callahan is new in Haven Point, and he spends most of his time working and struggling to care for an autistic half-brother, Milo, he didn't know existed until recently. Katrina Bailey has her own set of struggles, and when Bo makes her an over-generous offer of employment caring for Milo, she wishes she could refuse, and she would . . . if it weren't for a little girl she's determined to adopt. Many of the most tender moments are between Katrina and Milo, but there is plenty of romance between Bo and Katrina. Their affection and romance builds gradually and feels real. I appreciate how the author keeps the romance clean while still giving the reader plenty of heart-fluttering moments. I felt in many ways that it wasn't just the children in need of compassion and healing because Bo and Katrina fill holes in each other's hearts they didn't know needed filling. I haven't read the other books in this series, but it reads great as a stand-alone story. There are many wonderful secondary characters who add some extra charm and interactions with the main characters. RaeAnne Thayne has written a heartwarming story with sweet romance and a wonderful happily-ever-after. - A Reader's Opinion: FLEEING THE SHADOWS by Phyllis A. Still
A READER'S OPINION FLEEING THE SHADOWS follows fast in the footsteps of 2016’s Defiance on Indian Creek , which was Book One of the Dangerous Loyalties historical fiction series from Phyllis A. Still. It continues the adolescent years of Mary Shirley, oldest child of the Shirley family that have recently left their home and farm in Western Virginia to travel to Kentucky where her father wants to escape the British Army and lay claim to land in the new territory. To get there, they have to travel alone, by horseback and by foot on a dangerous trail where danger lurks in the shadows: Indians, wild animals and those who want to turn Mary’s father over to the British authorities. As with Defiance on Indian Creek , Ms. Still has penned a fast-moving, historically accurate account of pioneer life, this time on the trail to a new life that is expected to be more peaceful than their life in Virginia where loyalties were becoming torn between British and American, Natives and settlers, Blacks and Whites. There are other issues that young Mary now has to face: the stirrings of fascinations she feels for the young men she meets (not all of them honorable, she soon discovers), the realities of life inside the forts along the trail where women are discriminated against and justice is swiftly carried out for those that violate the law. All of this is discovered through the eyes of Mary, who is maturing quickly as she helps her pregnant mother and younger siblings endure the rigors of the trail. Wholly enjoyable, and quite intense and shocking at times (the author herself recommends readers be over the age of thirteen) this is a historical series to take note of and one I definitely want to keep following. It's late summer in the Alleghany Highlands, 1775. Colonial Virginia has resolved to support the American Revolutionary cause for liberty. The British are determined to retain control of the fur trade and keep frontiersmen fighting Indians instead of joining the Continentals. Thirteen-year-old Mary Shirley is still recovering from emotional wounds inflicted when she risked her life delivering traitorous dispatches. She trusted the wrong men, and now the family must flee Indian Creek to stay ahead of British Loyalist who seek her papa's life. But they can't risk being captured by taking the main road to Daniel Boone's trail that leads into Kentucky territory. You can drive it back to her house and Frank can follow you.” He didn’t mention that once he got there, he’d be staying with Carly while Frank drove Ross back to the ranch. Ross put the GMC in gear and headed down the road. A few minutes later, after only a minor protest, Carly was belted into the passenger seat of the truck, Linc back behind the wheel. Ross and Frank followed in the F-150 and Frank’s Chevy Malibu. The rain picked up again, battering the windshield as he drove back toward Iron Springs. The slap, slap of the wipers filled the quiet inside the cab. Carly remained silent. Worried, Linc started talking, telling her how they had found her, hoping his words would somehow make things easier. “After you left Frank at the market, he decided to stop by your house, make sure you’d gotten home okay. When you didn’t show up, he went back to the Stop and Shop and tracked you from there. He found your pickup on the side of the road, but you weren’t in it so he called Townsend, who’s staying at the ranch. Ross and I went back to your truck and started trying to track you from there.” She looked up at him. “I’m glad you didn’t call the sheriff. If the cops had shown up...” She let the sentence trail off, went back to staring out the window. “That’s the reason I didn’t call. I was afraid it would only make things worse for you.” She leaned back in the seat, kept her eyes fixed on the beads of rain rolling down the glass. “They took my gun,” she said softly. “I got off a few shots, but there were four of them. They pinned me down and the shots went wild.” He clamped down on his temper. If she realized how upset he really was, it would only make things worse. “Where did they take you?” “I don’t know. I was blindfolded. The only thing I know about El Jefe is he wears thousand dollar high-top sneakers and they were at least a size twelve.” “So you never got a look at him.” “No. But the guy has kind of a deep raspy voice and he speaks with a Spanish accent. I remember his feet pointed in like he was a slightly pigeon-toed.” “He hit you?” he asked, making the question sound casual when he was feeling exactly the opposite. “He slapped me a few times to make his point.” His hands tightened around the wheel. “Which was?” “He wants Drake Trucking to start working for him. We’re supposed to haul his goods--whatever they are--take them wherever he wants them taken. No questions asked. - Excerpt: UNDER THE APPROACHING DARK by Anna Belfrage
“The writing is impeccable. The story has everything. Under the Approaching Dark is just perfect in every sense” – Sharon Bennett Connolly, History The Interesting Bits Under the Approaching Dark The King's Greatest Enemy III Adam de Guirande has cause to believe the turbulent times are behind him: Hugh Despenser is dead and Edward II is forced to abdicate in favour of his young son. It is time to look forward, to a bright new world in which the young king, guided by his council, heals his kingdom and restores its greatness. But the turmoil is far from over. After years of strife, England in the early months of 1327 is a country in need of stability, and many turn with hope towards the new young king, Edward III. But Edward is too young to rule, so instead it is his mother, Queen Isabella, and her lover, Roger Mortimer, who do the actual governing, much to the dislike of barons such as Henry of Lancaster. In the north, the Scots take advantage of the weakened state of the realm and raid with impunity. Closer to court, it is Mortimer’s increasing powers that cause concerns – both among his enemies, but also for men like Adam, who loves Mortimer dearly, but loves the young king just as much. When it is announced that Edward II has died in September of 1327, what has so far been a grumble grows into voluble protests against Mortimer. Yet again, the spectre of rebellion haunts the land, and things are further complicated by the reappearance of one of Adam’s personal enemies. Soon enough, he and his beloved wife Kit are fighting for their survival – even more so when Adam is given a task that puts them both in the gravest of dangers. It was three days before Twelfth Night in the year of our Lord 1327, and Adam should have already been on his way to Westminster, but he had delayed on purpose, not wanting to leave until his priest brother returned from his recent excursion to Tewkesbury Abbey. It was wet rather than cold, and dark clouds to the east promised more rain. Adam sighed: it would be a long ride to Westminster, but he was not in a position to refuse. He had been summoned back to court, by both Prince Edward, his present young master, and Lord Roger Mortimer, his former master. From the terse wordings in the two separate messages, delivered by two different and exhausted messengers, Adam gathered his two lords were not seeing eye to eye on things. They rarely did lately. Ever since Mortimer—or rather Queen Isabella—had led the invasion that had deprived King Edward of his throne, the prince’s relationship with his lady mother’s champion and lover had cooled. Now King Edward was held prisoner at Kenilworth—an honourable and comfortable captivity, to be sure—and this had further distanced the prince from his mother. Adam strode over to the gate to welcome William, stopping for a moment to take in his manor with proprietary pride. Tresaints was not a large place: it consisted of the manor house, several buildings that housed barn and stables, kitchens and storage sheds, and, to the left of the house, a chapel, built some centuries earlier by a returning crusader ancestor of Kit’s. The thought of his wife made him smile, and he glanced at the solar window, the opaque horn panes lit from within by candles and fire. His Kit, surely sitting up in bed with their newborn son at her breast. A son, a little bundle he had already taken to his heart, holding him for hours as he slept. - A Reader's Opinion: SPLENDOR by Shehanne Moore
A READER'S OPINION SPLENDOR is irresistible! SPLENDOR by talented author Shehanne Moore was the perfect read for me right when I needed it! I had so much fun reading this story because it featured a heroine who has to disguise herself as a man. I simply cannot resist a Regency historical romance when the main character has to cross-dress to win her point. SPLENDOR tells the story of Splendor Malachi who out of necessity, has to win a chess tournament to pay her family's debts. Since only men are allowed to play this game, she is determined to win . . . but she must be dressed as a man. Can she really fool the other players? It's at this tournament where she meets her opponent, Kendall, a famous rake. The moment they meet, a strange feeling is in the air, one neither of them can resist! Why is Kendall attracted to this young man? There's plenty of fun and some scenes had me giggle! This is a story of lies, secrets, sex, love, and misunderstandings. The heroine is bold and determined, which makes this story interesting to follow. Splendor and Kendall's journey together will be filled with plenty of surprises and romance. SPLENDOR is the second story in Ms. Moore's London Jewel Thieves series, and I will definitely watch for her third story! - A Reader's Opinion: MURDER ON HIGHWAY 2 by Emma Pivato
A READER'S OPINION Emma Pivato is a Canadian author who writes "cozy mysteries" a popular mystery genre that shuns graphic violence, sex, and profanity. It is quite popular amongst young adult readers and mature ones alike. MURDER ON HIGHWAY 2 is book number 5 in the Claire Burke Mystery series and while one need not have read the previous titles in the series, it certainly helps in familiarizing oneself with the various characters in Claire's ever-widening circle of friends and family. In book #5, Hilda Boaz' husband Gary and her mother Marion are killed in a motor vehicle accident on Highway 2 (the setting is Edmonton, Alberta). Devastated, Hilda turns to alcohol, takes time off work, disconnects her phone, and puts a Do Not Disturb sign on her door. She simply cannot cope with the double loss in her life. While the Edmonton Police believe the deaths were the result of an accident, Claire, ever interested in getting all the facts and looking for opportunities to solve a mystery, thinks otherwise when it was discovered by forensics that the driver of the van that hit them was wearing a crash helmet! This motivates Claire to get her team together to follow leads that the police have not investigated yet, such as a biker's clubhouse, pulling encrypted files off a PC and so on. The team meets regularly to hash out issues and discuss findings so that everyone is on the same page. A lot of tea and cookies are consumed. Some of the story involves some suspension of reality on the reader's behalf, but MURDER ON HIGHWAY 2 is a good story, and it is not centered around any one character in particular. In fact, Claire does not really make an appearance until well into the storyline. Ms. Pivato does not go too deeply into social issues like depression, coping with the loss of a loved one and living with disabilities, but she is a compassionate writer who writes in an easy to read, conversational and sometimes informative way. Some potential roadblocks to the story are solved in an all-too-easy manner (like getting passwords to encrypted files a little too easily) and there are too many exclamation points in the dialogues for my liking, but if you are a fan of cozy mysteries, you are sure to like MURDER ON HIGHWAY 2, if not the entire Claire Burke Mystery series. But Hilda’s friends, Claire, Tia, Gus and Amanda, suspect otherwise. They are particularly upset by the death of Marion and are determined to find her killer. Marion had worked hard, along with the rest of them, to buy and organize a home for her autistic nephew, Bill, Tia’s sister-in-law, Mavis, and another young man, Roscoe, who had all come to Edmonton from a Calgary institution for people with developmental disabilities. Claire’s Aunt Gus begins the action by fishing for possible suspects at Gary’s business. There she bumps into an old friend who becomes an invaluable asset to their group. Slowly some important clues emerge thanks to another new group member, Matthew, the 16 year-old, computer-savvy grandson of Tia’s neighbor, Amanda. These clues lead to some tense adventures on a cruise, and dangerous interactions with members of two motorcycle clubs. But still the group seems no closer to finding Marion’s and Gary’s killer and Inspector McCoy and Sergeant Crombie are also stymied. Then Tia’s baby is born and while visiting her at the hospital Claire comes across the first glimmerings of an answer. - A Reader's Opinion: THE COWBOY AND THE DOCTOR by Eve Gaddy
A READER'S OPINION Captivating cowboy contemporary romance set in Montana! THE COWBOY AND THE DOCTOR by Eve Gaddy was truly a fun and entertaining read for me. I absolutely love Dylan and Samantha, and I loved watching their friendship evolve to love and passion! A good, fast-paced western romance with a touch of suspense that kept my interest until the very end. It's captivating with an action-packed ending that ties everything up nicely. Ms. Gaddy is a new author for me, and I will surely watch her next book about the Gallagher family. It is the story of Dylan who has three brothers: Jack, Sean, Wyatt, all doctors, except Dylan and his sister, Glenna. All his brothers are happily married, but his sister went missing in Argentina. Her disappearance has Dylan so worried that he asked a private eye for his help in locating Glenna. Dylan is the only one not married, and he resists until he meets the beautiful doctor in his hometown. Samantha Striker is a trauma surgeon, and when Dylan brings his badly bruised friend to the hospital, he meets her and his heart was captured. There's beautiful chemistry between Dylan and Sam! Both have strong feelings for each other, and it's so hot that sparks flare all over to ignite a rich passion. Some scenes are sensual, even steamy, and very well written with tenderness. Who can resist a sexy cool cowboy? Meanwhile, danger is lurking around Samantha. Dylan will protect her and will do anything to catch the person who wants to hurt her. This is a story of two beautiful souls who were hurt in the past and who are afraid of being hurt again by love, but will receive a second chance. If you love horses and dogs, you’ll love this country romance! In the author's next book, we might learn what happened to Glenna. Readers who love country romances will love this book, and I am pleased to be able to highly recommend it. This is the first book I've read by this author, but it certainly won't be the last.
