It fit Mistress Alder’s description well enough. At the end was a hovel: little more than a few timber palings nailed together. But it proved to be the concealed entrance, as I had been told. ‘I cannot go in there.’ I eyed the narrow cleft that led off into absolute darkness. ‘I have been lost in these tunnels ’neath the Tower a year since. It was terrifying; blacker than hell itself. I will not do so again.’ ‘Come on, Seb. I never had you marked out for a coward,’ Adam said. ‘Besides, this time there are three of us and we each have a torch to light our way. And this can’t be the same tunnel since the Tower is over yonder.’ ‘And how else will we unravel this mystery?’ Thaddeus added. ‘You want answers, do you not? As we all do.’ ‘Aye, but not down a tunnel... See Gawain? He has better sense. He wants no part of this, wise dog that he be.’ It was true for Gawain’s tail and ears were drooping and he had come but half a pace within the hovel. He whimpered at the prospect. ‘Gawain can wait here for our return. Have courage, cousin: we’ll come to no harm.’ ‘How can you know? Who can tell what dangers may lurk within? Every twenty paces or thereabouts, I marked another cross – Our Lord’s symbol to guide us back to the light when this devil’s enterprise was done. It was as well that I had thought to use the chalk forewhy my torch illumined many a side passage, leading off on either hand, into oblivion. We might so easily take a wrong turning upon our return for the tunnels seemed a nest of entangled serpents, all entwined. We were together now, Adam and Thaddeus having waited for me to catch up. Assiduously, I continued to mark the wall. In places this proved difficult, where I had to scratch away the slime; in others the stones were dry but crumbling to dust. I feared a roof fall might happen at any moment but kept silent regarding my anxieties. As it was, my cousin had named me for a cowardly fellow. It concerned me greatly that we had not the least idea of our destination nor what we would find there. How might we know if we were but seeking spectres and phantasms? Was there anything to be found down here? Mayhap, we were cursed to wander in this foul place, forever lost in darkness. I checked my wild thoughts, meandering like these tunnels. All will be well, I told myself. I wiped sweat from my brow. ‘Look to our torch flames,’ I said. No longer bright yellow, they burned a dull, amber hue. ‘If we hope to find some alchemical process being conducted, then that requires fire. Fire makes smoke and, since no one could see and breathe in thick smoke, there must be a vent or chimney through which it makes its escape. I sense we be too far underground by now for either case. If such work goes on here, it must be in one of the side passages closer to the entrance. Nobody would bring a still, furnace, charcoal and equipment so far as this.’ ‘They could put it in a barrow. The passages are wide enough,’ Adam said, ‘I think we should go a way farther. After all, these tunnels must have been built to serve a purpose once.’ ‘I don’t know... ’Tis airless in here,’ Thaddeus said, sagging against the wall, knocking loose a shower of dust which set us coughing. ‘I’m getting breathless just walking.’ He was correct and Adam agreed. ‘Call me coward, if you will,’ I said. ‘But I think we must go back. There be evil here; I sense it surrounding us. Besides, I do not feel so good.’ Only as I spoke the words did I realise it was the case. My head ached and was rapidly filling with cobwebs, making clear thought more difficult by the moment. ‘Let’s get out of here,’ Thaddeus insisted. ‘Seb’s right. I’m feeling strange too. Come on.’ The bailiff turned his back and began to retrace his steps. He held his torch, ever dimmer now, so it shone upon the wall, searching out the chalk crosses. Much in need now of fresh air and – in my case – daylight, we went eagerly, although a strange lethargy began to drag at my heels. The others were slowing also and I found myself ahead of them both upon our retreat. Then came disaster. Of a sudden, I could not see any chalk crosses. I searched the walls, frantic to rediscover our holy guidance. My first panicked conclusion dawned: ‘Someone has followed us,’ I cried, ‘Erasing the marks I made. I know not which way... and what of the one who pursues us? Where is the devil? God save us! What can be done now? We be lost!’ My head spun; a flood of despair and dizziness nigh knocked me to the ground as if a flesh and blood assailant attacked me. I wish it had been so. I might defend myself against a fist or a club but against these invisible foes what could I do? ‘On your feet, cousin,’ Adam demanded, dragging at my arm. ‘Come! We’re not done for yet.’ He and Thaddeus pulled me upright, though neither man looked much better than I felt. We've read rave reviews for her fascinating works of historical fiction, but let's hear directly from the author on her writing and a little something extra about the book. Who are your main characters? Tell us a little about what makes them tick. Emma of Normandy has been bound in a political marriage for ten years to a man she neither loves nor respects. Intelligent and deeply religious, her strongest character trait is loyalty, so she is loyal to the king despite her dislike for him, her outrage at his brutal acts, even despite her love for another man. She has to walk a very fine line, though, between her loyalty to the king for the sake of her children, her belief in what is right and wrong, and her resentment at the king’s efforts to marginalize her. She is protective of those in her care. She knows who her enemies are and does whatever she must to thwart them. She has suffered great loss, and that has matured and even hardened her. She can be self-reproachful and sometimes doubts herself. Elgiva is an English noblewoman who is convinced that she is destined for queenship. She is tortured by the fate that has made her a woman in a man’s world, but she uses her sexuality to get what she wants. She is determined to be the spinner of her own fate. She loves intrigue, but only to pursue her own ends. She is not very perceptive. She only really understands people who are just like her—driven by a desire for power. She is a risk-taker, afraid of almost no one. Her conviction of her own invincibility gives her courage to face just about anything….even death. Do you have to be alone or have quiet to write? Yes, I have to be alone and quiet. It’s a mystery to me how other very fine writers can listen to music while they work. I would find it utterly distracting. Nor is there any question of going off to a coffee shop to write—something that I did ages ago before I decided to write a historical novel. I’d have to bring several shelves of books along with me in case I wanted to verify something. Horribly impractical. Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book? I want each of my novels about Emma of Normandy to stand on its own. This gets harder with each book, though. The early drafts of The Steel Beneath the Silk leaned heavily upon events that happened in Shadow on the Crown and The Price of Blood , but I needed it to stand on its own two feet. An editor went through it and suggested where I could bring in just a line or two of back story—enough to give a reader new to the trilogy necessary information, yet not so much that readers familiar with the first two books would be bored. Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with bad or good ones? Yes, I read my book reviews. Once a book is out in the world, it doesn’t really belong to the author any more. It belongs to readers, and because each reader brings different life experiences to the book, it strikes different readers in different ways. I’m sometimes astonished at the insights that readers give me to my own work. Of course I appreciate the positive reviews. As for the ones that are critical, well, everyone is entitled to an opinion. Novelists have to be thick-skinned, which is not to say that negative reviews don’t bother me, but I try not to read them more than once. If you were to genre-hop, which genres would you most like to try writing? It would be fun to try my hand at medieval fantasy. A reviewer wrote that The Steel Beneath the Silk is like Game of Thrones without the dragons and I thought, “Hmm. Maybe I should add some dragons sometime.” The trouble is, George Martin, Tolkien and Anne McCaffrey have already done it, and brilliantly. Still, that northern European, mythic world has always appealed to me. I would enjoy immersing myself in it for a time. Want more? Read an excerpt from chapter one. Enjoy an Excerpt from Mountain Survival “It’s up to you, Sherlock,” Autumn Mercer murmured as she knelt beside her dog. “You have to find her.” Sherlock barked, his tongue hanging from his mouth as he panted with excitement. Autumn held a sweater belonging to one of her coworkers beneath her dog’s nose. Sherlock sniffed it before sitting at attention and waiting patiently for her command. The dog was practically salivating to get to work. Autumn paused a beat before saying, “Search!” At once, Sherlock tugged at his leash and started toward the thick forest on the edge of the small, secluded parking lot. The dog never looked as happy as when he had a job to do. The Australian shepherd, a red merle with striking blue eyes, was always a sight to behold. In the three years since Autumn had been training him for search and rescue missions, the canine had become like a family member. She followed behind him, careful to track her steps so she could find her way back later. Every month, Autumn did these exercises with her dog so they could be prepared when needed. Just last week, she and her team had to track down a missing fourteen-year-old who’d wandered away from his family on a camping trip. Sherlock had also helped with search and rescue missions involving the elderly, hikers who explored off the marked trail and once an entire family who’d gotten lost while geocaching. Sherlock paused near a tree and sniffed. Then he veered to the left, deeper into the wilderness. “Good job, boy,” Autumn said. “Keep going.” Autumn pulled her jacket closer as she tramped between hemlock and oak trees. Q&A with Allan Evans What is your favorite scene in Killer Blonde ? I love writing the interaction between characters. As cool as having a loner main character sounds, it makes for a better story when characters argue, tease and have fun together. For an example, take one of my favorite scenes with Cade, his boss Capt. Rejene and his partner Rob: Capt. Rejene’s head swung around from Rob to Cade. “Really? You picked this time to get involved with the most prominent newsperson in the entire city? The same one who has a source within our investigation?” Lt. Rejene did not look pleased. At all. “Look, it just happened. I wasn’t looking for anything from her, but sometimes things happen. And just so you know, she isn’t getting anything from me.” “Information, you mean,” Rob interjected. Cade shook his head and held up a finger. “Reynolds isn’t getting information from me. Her source is someone else.” Which writer(s) inspire you? Without a doubt, I wouldn’t be writing if it wasn’t for John Sandford. His amazing storytelling in his Prey series featuring Lucas Davenport has thrilled me for decades and inspired me to write my own books. How do you select the names of your characters? The main character, Cade Dawkins, is named after my son Cade. Most of my characters are based on people I know. Some, I simply borrow a name, while others may have a few more traits thrown in. But, to paraphrase a common legal disclaimer: any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is meant to be a compliment. Do you have to be alone or have quiet to write? I may be the oddball among writers, but I prefer people and anything but quiet when I write. As I type this, I’m in a Starbucks with plenty of people (spaced appropriately apart) with louder music playing. I find I’m bopping my head to Payphone by Maroon 5 If you were to genre-hop, which genres would you most like to try writing? I’m a sucker for a good time travel story—and who says you can’t mix a thriller with time travel? Imagine a police officer with a found cell phone. It’s an odd looking cell, but it seems like there’s new models coming out weekly. When he redials the last number called to find out whose phone he has, a series of tones from the phone sends him reeling with vertigo as he hangs onto his squad car. When he comes out of it, he’s not by his squad, but instead he finds himself in an alley. Outside of the alley he’s drawn by a large crowd and follows them into the downtown area. Surprisingly, there’s mass chaos. There are demonstrators, police in full riot gear and helicopters buzzing overhead, and television cameras everywhere. Just like a week ago when there was a massive political event. Just like a week ago… Examining the phone, he wonders if the unbelievable has happened: did he just make a call to the past that brought him here? If so, he wants it to end and he pushed the red END button. The tones and the vertigo return, doubling him over. And he finds himself at his squad car once again. Curiouser and curiouser. See? By nine, the whole town closed down. At that hour, when the glow from living room televisions dimmed one by one along Grove Street, you could almost hear the words, “Good-night, John Boy, Good night, Jim Bob,” from The Waltons reruns she used to watch as a kid. Nobody’s around. Hardly surprising since teenagers have birth control and the comfort of their own beds for overnights. “Better at home than in the back of the car or some cheap motel, since they’re going to do it anyway,” explained her best friend, Rachel, whose daughter had a boyfriend with weekly sleepover privileges.
