- A Reader's Opinion: RODEO FATHER by Mary Sullivan
A READER'S OPINION A charming and heartwarming story of hope and unexpected love. Travis Read is a cowboy with a wounded heart and a deep fear of letting himself settle down and find more than a few months of happiness. Then he meets Rachel McGuire in Rodeo, Montana, a small town with a big heart. Rachel is not far from having a new baby, and she's pretty much alone in the world, or at least she often feels that way. A lot of people care about her but she's afraid of what letting someone else into her life might do to her fragile family. I will admit that it's been a long time since I've read a Harlequin book I liked. I tend to stay away from them nowadays but I was interested in the story and that it's set in my home state. I enjoy a good Montana story even if there isn't a lot of Montana in the writing. And, Mary Sullivan is a new-to-me author. She didn't disappoint! Travis and Rachel are both likeable characters who deserve all the love and happiness they can find. The author has a nice writing style and the story is well written, not what I've come to expect from these types of books. There was one scene, not a sex scene, but still intimate, that I admit I was embarrassed to witness. The author still did a good job with the writing of it, though. I was torn between liking this book and really liking it. Everything about the character's lives felt so real, and in the end I decided that any author who can keep me interested and invested in the characters enough to finish a book in one day, did a good job. A struggling widowed mom, Rachel wants to give her family the stability she's never had. Travis dashed those hopes by buying her dream house. Okay, she can start over. - A Reader's Opinion: WILD HORSE SPRINGS by Jodi Thomas
THE BOOK A Ransom Canyon Novel A READER'S OPINION WILD HORSE SPRINGS is a charming story about finding love again and standing up for others. Dan Brigman is a likeable sheriff who has a quiet life without any real excitement. He's one of those old-fashioned kind of men who falls in love and hopes for forever. He'll do anything for the people he loves. Brandi Malone is a little feisty, but only in the beginning. She has a sad secret and Dan wants to help be whole again. There are a lot of main characters in this book. It was hard to invest in any of them fully because when one story started going deeper the reader had to switch to someone else's story. The author did a good job of bringing all the different stories together but I would have liked more focus and depth just on Dan and Brandi's relationship and history. The ending was too rushed and didn't convince me that Dan and Brandi should be together, but I still liked them as characters and was very happy for their ending. I've read one of the earlier Ransom Canyon books and really liked it but I didn't get as invested in this one. Jodi Thomas has a nice and easy-to-read writing style that I really like. WILD HORSE SPRINGS is sure to please the author's fans and those who enjoy a mild contemporary romance. There are some really sweet and tender moments in this story and I plan to read more books in the Ransom Canyon series. - A Reader's Opinion: BRETTE by Collette Cameron
THE BOOK A READER'S OPINION Good book . . . Brette: Intensions Gone Astray was fun to read! It's the second love story of Collette Cameron's Conundrums of the Misses Culpepper series. BRETTE is one of the many books I've read by this talented author, and while I liked it, I didn't love it. The story was interesting enough, but it didn't grab my attention right away. The chemistry between Alexander and Brette makes them perfect for each other! These charming characters were lively and likeable. The heroine, Brette, loves the social lifestyle though she prefers the quietness of the countryside. What can happen when a handsome rogue named Alexander turns rector? Both their worlds will collide and send sparks all over. Lots of twists and turns to finally end on an happy note; quite predictable. Overall, this is an enjoyable read. However I found that something was missing. I really preferred her first story Wagers Gone Awry ! I recommend that you take a chance to read Brette’s story if you love Regency romance! - A Reader's Opinion: A WOMAN SO BOLD by L.S. Young
THE BOOK A READER'S OPINION Beautiful and descriptive writing! The setting in 1890s Florida is one I haven't come across in a book, at least not written so I felt like I was there. Landra Andrews has a secret, one that is keeping her from living the life she should. William Cavendish is as handsome and kind as he seems. But love is not so simple for Landra who imagined, and wanted, a different kind of life. I was impressed with the writer's detail of life in the South. She brought everything to life so vividly. The relationships didn't feel as strong as I expected, and the main characters seemed out of step with each other at times. The mystery wasn't as much of a mystery as I thought it would be, and this story read more like a historical work infused with a few romantic elements. That part I didn't mind because I really enjoyed the history the author wrote into the novel. I think I would have felt the romance more if the main characters had more of a connection. The prize of this story and the author's writing, is the setting and her beautiful descriptions. It is a nice page turner that readers of the genre are sure to enjoy. - A Reader's Opinion: NEVER LOVE A LAWMAN by Jo Goodman
THE BOOK A READER'S OPINION Jo Goodman knows how to pen a story that leaves you grasping for more. When it comes down to a choice between work or reading one of her books, there are times when I opt for the book. I'm partial to her historical western adventures, and NEVER LOVE A LAWMAN is right up there with every great book she's written. One of Goodman's trademarks is her ability to write compelling and fascinating characters, each with their own distinct personalities. Rachel Bailey and Wyatt Cooper do not disappoint. More than a year after Rachel moves to Reidsville, Colorado, she slowly begins to realize that Sheriff Cooper is much more than a man who appears to sit on his front porch and sleep. With a sharp mind, a keen eye, and a healthy dose of respect for justice, Wyatt surprises Rachel more times than she'd like to admit. Rachel might seem a bit standoffish towards the townspeople, but she carries with her a sadness that makes her want to keep her feelings protected. Wyatt, with his mega-watt smile and bundles of charm soon breaks down Rachel's barriers and helps her see the life she can have. Goodman's usual wit and snappy dialogue fill the pages of NEVER LOVE A LAWMAN, along with enough twists to keep the story interesting. If you love historical romantic westerns, then you should be reading Jo Goodman. - A Reader's Opinion: RESTORATION by Kim Loraine
THE BOOK A Golden Beach Novel A READER'S OPINION A great love story! Kim Loraine is a new author for me and RESTORATION was a nice introduction. Grace McConnell has more than work than restoring a town made up of ancient buildings. She's desperate to find a way to move on after the death of the man she loves. Drew Tensley is dreamy and endearing, and if I had been Grace, I would've fallen for him, too! Of course, it's not as easy as two lost souls meeting and falling in love. After a slow start, the book grabbed my attention and I became interested in the characters and rooted for both of them to get their happily-ever-after endings. Each new event and circumstance is a slow progression and aids in the development of the story and the characters' lives. Nothing felt rushed and instead felt natural, like it was happening to people you know and care about. The writing could have used a little more polish in some places to avoid confusion, but I loved the author's descriptions of the settings. The secondary characters, friends of Grace and Drew, were just as they should have been. Have your tissues handy and get ready to escape because RESTORATION is one of those books you'd like to curl up with under a blanket and just let yourself slip into the story. - RORY by Lily Baldwin - A Reader's Opinion
A Reader's Opinion A fantastic read! RORY: A SCOTTISH OUTLAW, is the first book I've read by Lily Baldwin. When I first started the story, I thought I might have missed something coming in at book three. However, the author ended chapter one on a great note and I easily kept going. Lady Alexandria "Alex" is a wonderful and strong heroine who loves Scotland above all else. Rory MacVie is a charming and loyal hero who also loves Scotland and would do anything for her. They are both honorable, spirited, and their passions and pursuits make them perfect for each other. Their romance is almost legendary! I feel like if I say much more it will give away too much of the story. Because I hadn't read the first books in the series, I didn't know what to expect but I was surprised a few times. The author did a good job holding my interest, and she has a nice and easy writing style. RORY: A SCOTTISH OUTLAW is sure to please anyone who enjoys a sensual medieval adventure. Rory: A Scottish Outlaw A passionate story of honor, rebellion, and forbidden love. Lady Alexandria MacKenzie is one of Abbot Matthew's network of rebels, fighting for Scottish independence. When her father dies, leaving their clan without a laird, she asks the abbot for aid in finding a husband. He sends her a selection of three noblemen from which to choose. Accompanying them is secret agent and reputed rake, Rory MacVie, who must assist Alexandria with a perilous mission for Scotland. But the abbot makes one point very clear--Rory is not a potential suitor. - A Reader's Opinion: WINGS OF MAYHEM by Sue Coletta
THE BOOK A READER'S OPINION The Grave Digger from Bones meets Silence of the Lambs in WINGS OF MAYHEM by Sue Coletta. This book really caught my attention, first by the cover and then by the synopsis. I was hooked from page one! The author said this book wasn't for the faint of heart and she was right. We get a deep look behind the crime scenes with Shawnee Daniels, a woman who lives two lives. When she crosses the wrong killer, it's a race to see if she can find what he wants returned before he makes her his next victim. The author really did a good job creating two distinct roles for Shawnee and blending them together into one person. Instead of waiting to discover the big bad guy, we know who Jack is from the start. I was upset with Shawnee for not turning this guy over to the cops early on, and it didn't put her on my favorite character list. Then again, the suspense kept me turning the pages. Sue Coletta is very descriptive and writes a masterful crime scene with just enough detail to make you cringe and feel like you're standing over the scene. There's even a little humor to break up the mayhem. WINGS OF MAYHEM is a gripping thriller that will keep you on the edge and wanting more. Content Note from the Author : This is not a romance book and does not contact obvious romantic/sexual elements. This book is not for the faint of heart.
