- A Reader's Opinion: TO HAVE AND TO HOLD by Charlene Raddon
A READER'S OPINION An enjoyable western romance worthy of the genre! TO HAVE AND TO HOLD tells the story of Tempest Whitney, a single mother struggling in debt on the Utah frontier in 1888. She's left with her thieving husband's debts and a ruthless rancher who wants her homestead . . . and Tempest. Enters Buck Maddux, a stranger who was given half of Tempest's ranch and sworn to look after her. Tempest is a strong heroine who desperately wants to be out from under the control of dishonorable men. She's not sure what to make of Buck when he arrives, and it doesn't take either of them too long to figure out that they need each other, even if they'd rather part ways. TO HAVE AND TO HOLD is wonderfully descriptive with touches of humor and a great romance. Tempest's daughter, Ariel, is a charmer and scene-stealer. This is an entertaining read! - A Reader's Opinion: PASSION AND PLUNDER by Collette Cameron
A READER'S OPINION Another beautiful Scottish story by Collette Cameron! Collette Cameron never disappoints me with her Scottish romances! I really enjoyed PASSION AND PLUNDER, her fifth story in the Highland Heather Romancing a Scot series. She nicely blended her charming characters, Lydia and Alasdair, into a well-developed plot and beautiful love story. This author is a very descriptive writer, so reading her books is always fun and a great escape. This story is about true love, second chances, secrets, and trust. Lovers of love stories set in Scotland will love this book! Tornbury Fortress, Scottish Highlands January 1819 . . . Lydia Ferguson has lost everyone she loved except her father who is dying. His last wish is for her to find a suitable husband, so he concocts a plan to invite eligible men to meet Lydia. Which warrior will win Lydia's heart and look beyond that she is only surviving heir to the Laird of Tornbury's Fortress? A charming Scotsman named Alasdair, son of Craiglocky Keep's war chief, enters her life, only Alasdair has a secret. He always admired Lydia, however because of this secret, he never showed her his true feelings. When danger lurks around Lydia, he will become her protector, and you can feel the beautiful chemistry that Lydia and Alasdair share. I loved the epilogue because it ended on a happy note! The romantic intrigue between these two beautiful souls kept my interest until the end. It’s a wonderful historical novel that was enjoyable from start to finish. If you are not familiar with the Scottish language, you’ll have fun discovering new words such as this passage: “Och, eight, ye say?” Da laughed and slapped his gaunt chest when he started coughing again. “We’d best find ye a husband soon, and get started then. Ye’ve nae time to waste. A big, strappin’ Scot, like one of those McTavish twins. That Alasdair McTavish, now he be a braw fellow. Keen too.” Well done, Ms. Cameron! - A Reader's Opinion: CLAIMED BY THE BOUNTY HUNTER by Emma Prince
A READER'S OPINION Adventure and steamy romance come together in CLAIMED BY THE BOUNTY HUNTER! Emma Prince is a new author for me and I so much enjoy a good Highland romance, so I was excited to try this book. Set during the time of Robert the Bruce, CLAIMED BY THE BOUNTY HUNTER follows Kirk MacLeod and Lillian Fitzhugh's journey across the Highlands. Kirk is requested, except it's really more of an order, by Bruce to basically become a double-agent and spy on a group of mercenaries who kill and kidnap women, children, and sympathizers with the Scottish cause. When he infiltrates the group, he's given a contradictory order to kidnap Lillian. From there, he must decide if his mission is more important than the attraction and affection he feels for Lillian. It's a touch cliche in places, but I still enjoyed Kirk and Lillian's adventures and romantic spark. CLAIMED BY THE BOUNTY HUNTER is a story of murder, secrets, and lies, and it's a nice escape and fun read. Fans of Highland romance novels are sure to enjoy the writings of Emma Prince. - A Reader's Opinion: DUPLICITY by Jane Haseldine
A READER'S OPINION DUPLICITY will keep readers guessing until the very end! This is the first time that I read a book written by Jane Haseldine, and DUPLICITY is a real page turner! Ms. Haseldine nicely blended her characters into a well-written and developed suspense. I just took a peek at the first chapter and quickly got hooked, and since the story starts with a very intriguing scene, I could not put it down! I haven't read her first book but realized that DUPLICITY could be read as a stand-alone novel. In this book, we follow the same heroine, Julia Gooden, from The Last Time She Saw Him . Julia, mother of two young boys Logan and Will, is a crime reporter for a Detroit newspaper. She is protected in her life by her ex-husband David Tanner, a District Attorney, and her ex-boyfriend, Ray Navarro, a detective for the Detroit PD. Julia is an over-protective mother because Ben, her oldest brother, was kidnapped when she was a child. She is still tormented by the memories. She is also a stubborn, independent, and very smart woman willing to risk everything for her career. She is still separated from David, but working hard on a reconciliation. David is working on a case involving Nick Rossi, a powerful man and violent criminal who uses people. There are many twists and turns that make DUPLICITY a great suspense. Be prepared for a roller coaster ride of emotions, lies, and betrayals! Julia and Navarro will team up to solve the Rossi case, and the suspense ends on an unexpected note! Even if some passages have violence, which is to be expected in this genre, and are a bit rock & roll, I need to give DUPLICITY 5 stars. I don’t often read mystery-suspense, but still enjoyed following this strong heroine! I’m wondering what will happen next. Julia Gooden knows how to juggle different lives. A successful crime reporter, she covers the grittiest stories in the city while raising her two young boys in the suburbs. But beneath that accomplished façade is another Julia, still consumed by a tragedy that unfolded thirty years ago when her nine-year-old brother disappeared without a trace. Julia’s marriage, too, is a balancing act, as she tries to rekindle her relationship with her husband, Assistant District Attorney David Tanner, while maintaining professional boundaries. David is about to bring Nick Rossi to trial for crimes that include drug trafficking, illegal gambling, and bribery. But the story becomes much more urgent when a courthouse bomb claims several victims—including the prosecution’s key witness—and leaves David critically injured. Though Julia is certain that Rossi orchestrated the attack, the case against him is collapsing, and his power and connections run high and wide. With the help of Detective Raymond Navarro of the Detroit PD, she starts following a trail of blackmail, payback, and political ambition, little imagining where it will lead. - A Reader's Opinion: BEYOND REASON by Kat Martin
A READER'S OPINION A fantastic start to a promising new trilogy! BEYOND REASON by Kat Martin is the first novel in her new Texas trilogy, and boy does she bring the heat. Carly Drake inherited her grandfather's trucking business, not exactly a job people think she's cut out to handle. However, Carly is determined to prove that you can succeed and make her grandfather proud. She doesn't expect the handsome, multi-millionaire Lincoln Cain to swoop in and try to take over her life . . . not that doing so would be a bad thing. Seriously, Lincoln Cain—Linc—is definitely magnetic, charming, and everything in between. The secondary characters are numerous, but all play an integral part and don't overtake the story. From the characters to the detailed settings to the fast-paced suspense, the author packs quite a punch with plenty of action, multiple twists, a few surprises, and a sexy-as-all-get-out romance. - A Reader's Opinion: FORBIDDEN KNIGHT by Diana Cosby
A READER'S OPINION Romantic and adventurous! FORBIDDEN KNIGHT by Diana Cosby is the first book I've read by this author, and I think I've been missing out! Thomas MacKelloch is a Knight Templar who has met his match in Alesone MacNiven. Entrusted to protect Alesone from her own father, Thomas fights men and his own desires in order to keep her safe. As a healer, Alesone has vowed to nurture. As a knight sworn to duty, Thomas has vowed to remain loyal to the Templars, his king, and his oath. Except, while escorting Alesone from Robert Bruce's camp to safety, he realizes the oath he took might not withstand his powerful attraction to such an admirable woman. Diana Cosby has a wonderful style that is sure to keep readers turning the pages of FORBIDDEN KNIGHT. I also liked how she added in pieces of history without overpowering the story; there was a nice balance of all elements. Alesone's courage and kind heart are exactly what Thomas needs to heal his past wounds and reunite with his family. But will it be enough? - A Reader's Opinion: PROMISES TO KEEP by Genevieve Graham
A READER'S OPINION Set during the time of the Acadian expulsion in 1755 ("Le grand dérangement") from what is now Nova Scotia. PROMISES TO KEEP contains a stronger, deeper story than its romantic cover art might suggest. While there is a strong attraction between the Acadian girl Amélie Belliveau and the English army Corporal Connor MacDonnell, there is little time for any romance for the English army is determined to rid their newly acquired territory of the Acadians as soon as possible. A peaceable people, the Acadians refuse to swear allegiance to the English King and want nothing to do with the French army either. Nevertheless, the Acadians are seen as French sympathizers by the English and likely to take up arms against them if they are allowed to remain in Acadia. These proud, stubborn people must be forcibly removed. This is the state of turmoil that gives PROMISES TO KEEP its basis for conflict. Connor, while he is serving with the English army, is a Scot, who recently had his own homeland conquered by the British. Amélie, who doesn't understand what is soon to befall her people, finds a degree of kindness and trustworthiness in Connor that attracts her, yet she is cautious since the English have not treated her people respectfully since they arrived in Grand Pré. Connor informs her that if she remains, she will be shipped away from her land so she must flee to the forest as her two older brothers have done and as the Mi'kmaq have already done. Despite this, Connor promises her that he will do whatever he can to keep her and her family safe throughout the coming days of distress. I was extremely impressed with PROMISES TO KEEP. Ms. Graham's previous historical novel, Tides of Honour , was a Globe & Mail bestseller, and this one should fare just as well. To date, there has been very little written about the Acadian people from a fictional aspect and she does an excellent job of recreating the racial tension between the French Acadians and the English, the turmoil of upheaval from an established way of life that was idyllic to a certain degree, and the allegiances between the Acadians and Mi'kmaq that helped them to survive and exist to this day. A highly recommended read. Along with their friends, the neighbouring Mi’kmaq, the community believes they can remain on neutral political ground despite the rising tides of war. But peace can be fragile, and sometimes faith is not enough. When the Acadians refuse to pledge allegiance to the British in their war against the French, the army invades Grande Pré, claims the land, and rips the people from their homes. Amélie’s entire family, alongside the other Acadians, is exiled to ports unknown aboard dilapidated ships. Fortunately, Amélie has made a powerful ally. Having survived his own harrowing experience at the hands of the English, Corporal Connor MacDonnell is a reluctant participant in the British plan to expel the Acadians from their homeland. His sympathy for Amélie gradually evolves into a profound love, and he resolves to help her and her family in any way he can—even if it means treason. As the last warmth of summer fades, more ships arrive to ferry the Acadians away, and Connor is forced to make a decision that will alter the future forever. - A Reader's Opinion: INTERIOR DESIGN AND OTHER EMOTIONS by Kate Forest
A READER'S OPINION INTERIOR DESIGN AND OTHER EMOTIONS by Kate Forest is not a typical romance. I almost didn't read the book because I wasn't sure what to expect from the title. I was surprised and pleased by how the story turned out. Gina Giancarlo is an autistic interior designer who has only ever wanted to be like everyone around her. Tired of being different, Gina joins a drug trial that might give her the chance she's always wanted to be "normal." Chris Rinaldi is kind of a womanizer who is more interested in being successful than having a meaningful relationship. That is, until he meets Gina. Chris has to "grow up" and realize that there's more to life than making money and being a player. Gina's characters is well-rounded and shows a lot of depth. Her journey is really empowering and it impacts everyone around her, especially Chris who goes through is own changes on a journey to become a better person. His transformation is a little too out there because he has a long way to go but I ended up liking his character in the end. The author created a flawed protagonist who is endearing, and I like how she is portrayed and how strong she is. Will they find a way to make their love last without the help of the so-called miracle drug? Will Chris revert back to his old ways? A READER'S OPINION A CHRISTMAS IN PERIL by J.A. Hennrikus is an entertaining cozy mystery worth reading. I wanted to slip under a blanket and sit by the fire as I got into this book. Edwina “Sully” Sullivan was forced into retirement and went from being a cop to the manger of a small theater. She spent five years away from solving crimes. When her friend is arrested, Sully relies on instincts and not-so-rusty skills to help her out. Of course she had to keep the theater going at the same time . . . probably easier to solve crimes. I don't normally read cozy mysteries, except this one has me thinking I've missed out on some great books in this genre.
