A READER'S OPINION Fiery passion burns bright in HIS HIGHLAND LOVE! Kenneth Brodie and Mary Catherine Rose are denied the chance to be together by Cat's father. Kenneth is unable to deal with losing Cat and hearing that her father has arranged a marriage to another man in a different clan. He flees to France and believes he's lost his beloved Cat forever. Even though Cat refuses to marry the men her father chooses, he won't let her have Kenneth, and we really find out why. But her father's refusal to let her and Kenneth be together couldn't kill their love. When Kenneth returns and finds that Cat is free of marriage, he vows to protect and love her to whatever bitter end may come. Kenneth and Catherine are easy to like. The author's writing style is nice and well-paced, and Ms. Blair sweeps the reader away to the Highlands on a journey of love and adventure. The plot is well done with twists and turns to keep the reader guessing and hoping they get their happily-ever-after. Ms. Blair keeps us waiting and wanting with anticipation to the end. Readers who enjoy Highland romance should definitely try Willa Blair's books. A READER'S OPINION What a charming story! ROYALLY ENTITLED is a happily-ever-after story in the making. Anika Penning is young and in need of a husband to help her family financially, even it if it's a man she doesn't want to marry. Prince Valdemar is the grandson of Queen Marguerite, and heir of the fictional country of Brevalia. He's spent the years preparing himself to take the throne, but an unexpected encounter with Anika. They form a friendship that can't go further because she is untitled, and Prince Valdemar must marry according to his station. There are those who want to drive them apart, but of course, love has a way of winning against evil in this delightful fairy-tale style story. I don't normally enjoy younger characters in historical romance, but Anika was a really fun character with depth. The story started off with good pacing and kept going to the end. There were some twists to the plot that kept the story interesting. There were times when this felt more like a young adult novel, but it can easily be enjoyed by adults who like clean romance. I found myself cheering for Anika and Valdemar and liked them to the end. ROYALLY ENTITLED is enchanting! A READER'S OPINION Delightfully charming! WHEN THE SCOUNDREL SINS is the second book I've enjoyed by Anna Harrington. It's the romantic story of the brazen Annabelle Green and the dashing Quinton Carlisle. Annabelle needs a husband quickly, but an indiscretion has made finding a husband difficult. She turns to Quinton, who got her into trouble in the first place, and now she wants him to stand up to his responsibilities . . . or does she? Only, Quinton doesn't want marriage to her or anyone else, no matter how tempting Annabelle has become. The story has all the requisite elements for a passion-filled historical romance: a beautiful innocent, a rakish hero, and enough conflict to keep them apart until they realize they can't live without each other. The dialogue is quick and Ms. Harrington mixes in some humor to keep the reader interested. I've read so many historical romances lately where the characters talk and sound more like teenagers, but no so with this one. The author's style is easy to enjoy and kept me interested. I really liked both characters and their chemistry was fantastic! Ms. Harrington brings charm and passion together in this enjoyable Regency romance. A READER'S OPINION An enjoyable novel of mystery set in the 1920s, SEARCHING FOR IRENE introduces us to Anna Coughlin, a college-educated woman who takes a job at a Virginia mansion. Anna moves into the mansion of the wealthy Richardson family to help get their finances in order, except, there's a secret hidden within the walls of the estate. The last financial advisor, Irene, went missing without explanation or warning. The family and the servants all come under Anna's suspicion and she can't help but wonder if she'll be next. This is one of those stories where if too much is talked about it could ruin the uncovering of events. Ms. Bateman did a nice job of building suspense and keeping the reader guessing. The romance is very clean and builds naturally. A lot of the situations between the characters felt real, like they could happen to anyone. Ms. Bateman puts the reader in the setting with the grand estate, and the mansion took on a life of its own. Good for all audiences, SEARCHING FOR IRENE is worth reading. A READER'S OPINION PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION is, as the cover states, a "Novel of Suspense" which it very much is. The female protagonist is Lizanne Demeter, a young teacher looking for a second chance in life. She finds herself reborn, recently released from a mental institution to which she was committed after a foolish suicide attempt due to a failed romance. On a new wonder-drug for depression called Zedorn, she feels that her traumatic past is behind her and she wants to move on and start teaching children again. The novel opens with her applying for a teaching position in Splinter Wood, Pennsylvania, a town far from Pittsburg and her past. However, all is not right in Splinter Wood. There have been suspicious deaths of two of the school's children over the past two years. Lizanne also finds that a serial killer on death row, James Adolph Rootham and head of the "Tribe of James," had his evil enclave just outside of town. Then there is Naomi Seabrook, an extreme helicopter parent who hovers around her son Sebastian, a boy who happens to be in Lizanne's class. Naomi inserts herself as a volunteer teacher's aide and is bold about making suggestions to Lizanne about how to run her classroom for Sebastian's benefit. Unfortunately, Sebastian is a less than ideal student and suffers psychologically from Naomi's suffocating parenting style. Then, another child dies, dropping at Lizanne's feet from a schoolyard tree during recess. Lizanne's world and her control of it are slowly eroding away, as is her grip on depression and flashbacks to her own childhood trauma, which eventually leads to her dismissal. While Lizanne is, without a doubt, a good teacher, she has never fully come to grips with her past and now with all the strangeness of Splinter Wood, Lizanne begins to unravel at the seams and believes that finding the murderer in town will return her to favour with the school principal, Ruth Cannon. A very suspenseful novel, PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION had me holding my breath at times as my eyes quickly skimmed the words trying to discover what was going to happen next. Ms. Soosar keeps Lizanne (and the reader) under an even strain throughout the book. She never telegraphs the outcomes of certain situations either (especially the ending), which I very much appreciated. PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION is almost like a cozy mystery, however, there is some profanity and brief mature situations, though no sex. Highly recommended for fans of the suspense/mystery genre. A READER'S OPINION I did not know Benedict and Theodosia for long before I was drawn into their story. Both characters are beautifully written; one cannot help but feel their devotion to one another. The book is basically two stories that end up woven together in the end; one of Benedict and one of Theodosia. I did find Benedict's story a tad more fascinating, but don't discount his beloved wife. I adore Benedict with his strong heart, sense of valor, his courage, and goodness. I loved the history that was meticulously woven into the fiction aspects of the story. The setting is wonderful, and I truly felt as though I was in England during a time of great hardship on one end and unnecessary opulence on the other. The main villain is superb, and though you hate him, you can't help but appreciate how well he was constructed. I have not yet read The Fifth Knight , so I can't say how this book is compared to the first. I did have to catch up with the numerous characters, but once I did, I settled in and enjoyed the story. The book is filled with twists, turns, and surprises, and an ending that I'll admit caught me off guard. A great book for historical fiction lovers. A READER'S OPINION Mystery and intrigue will have you turning the pages in this fast-paced story. ​ William of Anglesea and Lady Alice of Tarnwych are brought together in a marriage of convenience, each looking to fulfill different dreams and hopes. For Alice, this is her fourth wedding and she yearns for a child. William wanted a keep and lands of his own. Alice has only to look at her husband and realize that he's different from her previous husbands. He makes her feel, and the fluttering in her heart has her flustered. Alice isn't your typical chatelaine. Aside from doing her duty in the marriages her father has arranged for her, she knows nothing in running a castle. She feels honour-bound to Sister Julianna, the woman who has raised her from infancy, and has allowed her full rein of the castle. Sister Julianna runs the castle with a tight fist, and Alice as well. William has a way of stirring her passion and Sister Julianna is not happy, and tries to stir trouble and drive the newlyweds apart. Sister Julianna and William don't get along, and after certain events and accidents, he's almost sure that the "good " sister just might have something to do with it. Sister Julianna is evil and unhinged in my opinion. The passion between William and Alice is strong, and just when William thinks the layers that bind Alice are coming apart, the plot thickens! Sarah Hegger is a new to me author and she has me hooked! This story was fantastic, and a definite must read! A READER'S OPINION Enchanting and charming! Dawn Brower has written an enjoyable young adult fantasy story about an evil curse and a young princess who will soon become queen . . . if the evil can be stopped. Elodie is a spunky young princess who isn't far from her eighteenth birthday, when she is supposed be have her coronation. An evil that wants to prevent her from becoming queen curses Elodie into another realm of darkness and nightmares—Malediction. I don't normally read young adult books, but I took a chance with this one and Ms. Brower surprised me. I was pulled into the story and enjoyed my time following Princess Elodie's life as she battles the mysterious curse trying to get home to her kingdom of Zelnon. Being a young adult book, the dialogue style is suited more for a younger audience. THE ENCHANTED PRINCESS is filled with magic, sweet touches of romance, good vs. evil, and many other requisite elements for this type of story. With adventure, a sassy princess, a charming prince, a trusted guard, and other interesting characters, this delightful young adult fantasy is sure to please readers of the genre. Can you give us a little story behind the story? I truly enjoyed writing When A Lady Dares. I’d first introduced Sophie, the heroine of the story, to readers in When A Lady Deceives, and I really loved her independent, can-do attitude spirit and her loyalty to those she cares about and her commitment to her duty as a covert agent. When it came time to give Sophie her own story, I knew I wanted to pair her with a clever hero with a wry sense of humor, a man who can match wits with Sophie while embracing the challenge she poses. I envisioned the scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark when Indiana Jones was teaching at the university and infused Gavin, the hero, with many of the qualities Dr. Jones displayed when he wasn’t off chasing artifacts in a far-away tomb. My favorite motivational phrase is a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt — “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” I whole-heartedly believe in the power of this sentiment. If you don’t dare to pursue your dreams, you will never know what you might have accomplished. Even if you don’t succeed in achieving that precise dream, you’ll learn so much about yourself and the world along the way. What are three things people may not know about you? Three things people may not know about me… hmmm … ~ I adore being near the water. Sitting with a good book on the beach is so peaceful. I love it! If I’m not near a beach, I’m happy walking by the river’s edge or sitting on the shore of a lake. I don’t think I’d ever be happy living in a place that wasn’t near the water. ~ I love antiques, especially old furniture. In the last couple of years, I’ve taken to painting and restoring vintage pieces with chalk paint. I love the sense of accomplishment and the repurposing of well-used furniture that might otherwise have been relegated to a dusty attic. ~ I am a huge fan of classic rock. Van Halen, Pat Benatar, Elton John, the Beatles, and the Rolling Stones are among my favorites. What is your favorite movie based on a book, where you preferred the movie? My favorite movie that is based on a book is a film that remains one of my all-time favorites, The Wizard of Oz. While the book is excellent, there was something utterly magical about the movie. Judy Garland was such a vibrant talent, as were the other actors in the cast. Who can ever forget Margaret Hamilton cackling, “I’ll get you, my pretty!” or Dorothy repeating, “There’s no place like home” as she clicks her heels at the end of the movie? A READER'S OPINION A STARDANCE SUMMER offers the reader romance, charm, and real emotions. Lilliana Howe had to get away. She packed up, joined a group of quirky women called the Tornado Alleycats, and headed for the mountains of Colorado. In Eternity Springs, she bumps into her brother's childhood best friend, Brick Callahan (aka Mark Christopher). She didn't expect to see him again, and Brick really didn't expect his friend's skinny, freckle-faced sister to grow up into such a beautiful woman. What I liked most about Lilliana was how little you thought about her looks throughout the story. She was fun and caring with a great personality. She was very easy to like and connect with. Brick wasn't as easy to like in some parts of the book but I liked the change in him during the story. Everyone heals from heartache in their own way and sometimes it takes longer for others. Patty, one of the secondary characters and "leader" of the Tornado Alleycats, was a scene-stealer and a lot of fun. I haven't had the pleasure of reading an Emily March before, and I enjoyed the story and writing style that made the book easy to read. I was a little confused with all the back and forth on the names for Brick at first but once I kept it straight, the story moved along easier. This book is #13 in the author's Eternity Springs series and can be read as a stand-alone, but the number of characters mentioned leads me to think that it might be helpful to meet some of them in earlier books. Emily March has a nice way of building the romance to make it feel believable and touch the heart. This would be a great book to add to your summer reading collection.
