What is your favorite quote? Life is either a grand adventure or nothing. – Helen Keller. After all, what’s the point of living if we don’t live grand, grab up every experience we can, and enjoy it? How long on average does it take you to write a book? In the summer, when I’m not teaching, I can write a 95K word book in about 5 weeks. Then, I’ll spend another month revising it, and another month with copyedits and page proofs. But all that could be spread out across an entire year, as getting the revisions and proofs is determined by my editor. It usually takes at least a year from the time the publisher contracts a book until it’s released. How do you select the names of your characters? I have lists of traditional male and female names from England in the early 1800’s, and when I need to name a character, I try to keep a really strong visual of that character in my mind, then go down the list, name by name, until one of them clicks. Sometimes that doesn’t work. I once tried to write a character named Ian, but it just wasn’t working…until I realized that his name was really Nate. I changed names, and the book ended up just flying onto the page then. What is your favorite scene in When the Scoundrel Sins ? My favorite scene is the first library scene when Belle meets Quinn at midnight (SPOILERS!) in order to propose to him. The scene has so many layers in it. There’s flirtation and longing because they both have feelings for the other but refuse to admit to them, the conflict is fully established between them during this scene, and there’s lots of humor, too. We come to realize why leaving for America is so important to Quinn, and why Belle loves being an unapologetic bluestocking. Did I mention that there’s also lots of kissing? Can you give us a little story behind the story? The Heart of the Pack is actually the third book in my Brothers of Fang series. What I feel is completely unique about this series in general is that throughout, readers have the ability to get the perspective of every important character. I don’t show everything all at once, but the reader gets to dig inside the mind of each brother and the three heroines in the book as well. The reader can pick and choose who it is they connect with and achieve more insight unlike with books with limited point of views. I wanted to contrast the three brothers as well as the three women in every way possible while still bringing them together in the grand scheme of things. Do you share any personality traits with either of the main characters? I don’t think there is any escaping sharing traits with some of your characters. What readers might find interesting is that while Annalise is much like the woman I wish to be, I actually share many traits with the male lead, Isaiah. He has his heart in his sleeve, and he is always about principle and doing what is right regardless of the situation. He also is trying so hard not to be like his father before him. I can relate to him in so many ways. What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex? Making them realistic. Isiah and Roman were hard for me at first because they are loyal and caring men. They have strong emotions. I needed to figure out how they could be these strong alpha males and still have these emotions and express how they feel. I didn't want them to be too feminine, but I don't like my men so macho that they are not emotionally attractive. That middle ground is hard to find and hard to sell with some readers who prefer the big muscular man to control the woman. How do you feel about e-books vs. print books and self-publishing vs. traditional publishing? Even though the price is high, I much prefer print books. I have always wanted to buy a big house where I can have a large library. However, it is almost impossible for the modern author to get their physical books into bookstores. I hope to figure it out one day. As far as publishing, I much prefer self-publishing at the moment. I have heard so many horror stories of publishing companies scamming people and disappearing and that they do not even help with marketing. Essentially, all small and medium publishers seem to do is limit the author. However, when we are talking about large publishers such as Penguin or Little Brown and Co, still nothing can beat these. These get you in every book store in the country and get you movie deals. If I could score one of them I would be on cloud 9. What story are you working on next, and what inspired it? Following the completion of the Brothers of Fang series, I will be starting a series called Dark Time. Already in progress, this is a YA Fantasy but more on the mature end. So, think more Fallen or Vampire Academy. YA Fantasy has been a genre I have been writing since I was ten years old. It’s by far my favorite to read, and I want to see my name right there with Lauren Kate and Alyson Noel. This series will feature teens with super powers, other dimensions, and angels. A READER'S OPINION Beverly Scott transports the reader to the late 1800s and the turn of the century in SARAH'S SECRET. Life as a pioneer was heavy with tribulations, deaths, disease, and struggles we can't imagine today. Ms. Scott gives the reader a glimpse into what life might have been like. It feels so real and true and even heartbreaking watching the characters overcome their hardships. A widow alone during a time made for men, Sarah had to be strong and she proved herself courageous. The research was very well done and I really felt like I was struggling with Sarah as she cared for her family and traveled dangerous territory. There are hints of a mystery but it didn't feel like a mystery. What keeps readers reading is wondering about Sarah's life and how she's going to make it through. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning a book? You could say I spent 15 to 20 years researching Safe House, in an odd way. Safe House is based on my experiences working as an advocate in a job very similar to the main character Grace’s job. However, my real job as advocate is much more complicated, messier, involving non-profit budgets, used furniture and midnight shelter toilet fixing. A job I still do part time and totally love. I worked a cumulative 15 years responding alongside law enforcement and other community partners to the scenes of domestic assaults or the hospital to serve survivors of domestic and sexual assault. As part of my experience I managed a small team, a shelter for a short year or so, ran some trauma recovery and support groups, became an expert witness in court, trained local medical and law enforcement with a group, and took copious amounts of training…so! I guess I did a lot of research. Unless you or someone you know is a survivor, you may have never heard the word Advocate. You may not even know what it means. We are a very secretive bunch. We are paid and trained to hide people, keep them safe and spirit them away when they are in danger and much more. Our job is keeping secrets. There is no way to give the world a peek into something I have become expert at, except through fiction. And even then, I can never share the little things that make survivors lives safer every day. Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special? Grace, the main character in Safe House , is an advocate who responds with handsome Officer Joe Hart to serve survivors of domestic assault. She works twenty-four hours a day to offer survivors and their children safe shelter and a way out. She is the stranger that shows up when your whole world comes crashing down and asks you to trust her and leave everything you know behind. Grace is also a single mother trying to keep her family going. Grace’s mother Mable, one of my favorite character’s, lives in an in-law apartment in Grace’s house with her younger brother. Grace is only thirty-eight, but she is already a survivor herself and wonders if there is anyone for a clumsy, curly blond. Grace’s talent is to be the eye of the storm. No matter what dangers swirl around her, she is calm and when you are with her you can’t help but believe that maybe, just maybe, everything is going to be alright. What else have you written? I began writing before most people read. I wrote poems and short stories. At 20 I tried my hand at a local poetry group. Two of my poems were published in a book called, “Utah Sings.” And then I fell victim to the age old myth that every writer needs a day job. Setting aside my dreams, as a single mother of five, I focused solely on supporting my family. Poems still leaked out and I even wrote the lyrics for a song which is on a DVD being sold somewhere. A READER'S OPINION THE CROOKED PATH by Irma Joubert, set in South Africa, is a touching story of love and loss. Lettie Louw is a great character and she is matched well with her husband; their story is sweet and tender. The author is wonderfully descriptive and I was right there in the places and times with the characters. There was a lot about this story I didn't expect, and I liked that, and a few characters I had a hard time connecting with. Except, through the whole story I always liked Lettie. She did so much to change who she was in order to find love, but I wished she could have been loved for who she was rather than what she looked like. She was a character to be admired for her strength and determination. THE CROOKED PATH has a title that mirrors Lettie's life and a strong cast of characters. The author has written a clean and compelling story set with a combination of time and place I hadn't read before. This is an enjoyable book.
