As twilight settled over the forest, Becca lost herself again in her fictional world. Her heroine Jessa and the artist Elias were finally having their moment, trapped in his remote studio during a blizzard much like the one outside her window. The words came so naturally now that Becca felt less like she was creating the story and more like she was simply transcribing events she was witnessing.

A sharp crack broke her concentration.

Becca froze, fingers hovering above the keyboard. The sound had come from outside—a tree branch breaking under the weight of snow, perhaps? She held her breath, listening. The cabin creaked as wind pushed against its walls, but otherwise, silence.

Until footsteps crunched through snow, approaching her front door.

Her heart thundered. The nearest neighbor was three miles away. No one in their right mind would be out in this weather unless they were desperate.

The knock, when it came, was soft but deliberate. Three gentle raps.

“Hello?” a deep voice called. “Is anyone there? My car went off the road. I need help.”

Becca hesitated. She was alone in a remote cabin during a snowstorm—the opening scene of countless horror movies. Yet leaving someone stranded in this weather could be a death sentence.

She moved to the window, peering through frost-edged glass. A tall figure stood on her porch, shoulders hunched against the cold, dark hair dusted with snow. He looked up, somehow sensing her gaze, and their eyes met through the window.

“Please,” he mouthed.

Something in his expression—exhaustion, vulnerability, a flicker of hope—decided her. Becca grabbed the fireplace poker just in case and moved to the door.

“I’m calling the police if you try anything,” she warned through the wood.

“Understood,” came the reply, voice trembling slightly. “I just need to warm up and maybe use your phone. Mine’s dead.”

Becca unlocked the door and pulled it open, keeping the poker visible. Cold air rushed in, along with a few errant snowflakes. The man on her doorstep was younger than she’d expected, maybe early thirties, with sharp cheekbones reddened by cold and dark eyes that widened at the sight of her improvised weapon.

“I promise I’m not dangerous,” he said, raising gloved hands. “Just incredibly unlucky and very cold.”

Becca studied him for a moment longer before stepping back. “Come in, but the poker stays with me until I’m convinced.”

“Fair enough.” He stepped inside, bringing the scent of pine and winter with him. “I’m Gabriel, by the way. Gabriel Winters.”
