Q&A with KAT MARTIN
MK: Into the Firestorm is one heck of a great ride. It has everything: action, suspense, and romance. Is it just as exciting for you to write these books as it is for us to read them?
KAT: This particular book was. It is one of my all time favorites. Luke Brodie was just the most fun character. He’s gorgeous to look at, strong, smart, and unbelievably sexy. Some books are definitely more work than others. I loved the interaction between Luke and Emma. I hated to see this book end.
MK: Into the Firestorm is your third novel in the highly successful BOSS, Inc. series, but this isn’t the first time we meet members of the Brodie family. Can you tell us a little about how this family came about? Did you know you’d be writing the BOSS, Inc. novels before you finished the Brodies of Alaska?
KAT: I always have some idea what I’m going to write next. I was in the middle of Against the Sky, Nick Brodie’s story, when I got the idea for BOSS, Inc. (my editor’s clever title). Nick needed a place to move from Alaska with Samantha where they would be happy and he could find work. Seattle seemed perfect and he already had relatives there, Ethan and Luke.
I started the Against series with three brothers, Jackson, Gabe, and Dev Raines. Book #1 was Against the Wind, set in Wyoming. From there, friends of the brothers kept popping up. Ty Brodie, a detective in L.A. was the first of the Brodie family. His cousin Dylan showed up in Against the Mark and he was amazingly sexy. Dylan was from Alaska, a state I completely love, so I gave Dylan two brothers and wrote their stories. The Brodies just seemed to expand. I’m going to miss them.
MK: It’s known among your fans that you love to travel for both pleasure and research. What is one of your favorite travel research experiences? Where will your research take you to next?
KAT: I went to England several time when I was writing historicals. The trip was arranged so I got to stay in bed and breakfasts that were up to 400 years old. It was an amazing experience. I’ve been to France a lot, incorporated some of that in Devil’s Prize. Currently I’m writing a trilogy set in Texas. Beyond Reason is the first, out in June. I desperately need to go to Dallas (though I have been there several times). I need to refresh my memory of the area and hey, Texas is always fun, right?
MK: From seeing the first book in print to the glowing reviews we all hope for, but worry we won’t get, authors experience a multitude of highs and lows throughout their careers. Up to this point, what has been one of your greatest joys or experiences as a writer?
KAT: Hitting the New York Times was one of my most thrilling moments. It took years to accomplish so it was a big celebration. Recently, I got a fantastic thrill when Into the Whirlwind was chosen by "Suspense Magazine" as one of the four best Romantic Suspense novels of 2016. The same week, KOBO reader chose Into the Fury as one of the best of 2016. I’m thrilled readers are enjoying the books so much.
MK: In the past, you have also penned historical romance, and it all began with your very first novel, Magnificent Passage, set in the American frontier. What drew you to make the switch to contemporary romantic suspense?
KAT: I no longer write historicals. After about 40 books, I was looking for a new challenge. I started writing Romantic Suspense along with the historicals in order to build an audience (and still get paid). I discovered I loved writing them. I like the freedom of writing in the present, the opportunity to go so many different places with the story line. I plan to keep on writing hunky men and the women who tame them.
MK: What are you working on now and can readers expect more from the handsome and talented Brodies?
KAT: In June, Beyond Reason, the first book in my Texas Trilogy comes out.
Lincoln Cain is a multi-millionaire businessman. After 2 years in prison, he pulled himself out of the gutter and changed his life. He’s as tough as they come so Carly Drake, the woman who challenges him, is in for a rough ride. Luckily, she’s strong enough to handle him.
Which is good because when she finds herself in the sites of a drug lord, she is discovers she needs Linc’s help.
As far as the Brodies, I plan to write more gorgeous male detectives/bodyguards/bounty hunters in the future. I’m thinking three set in Texas might be fun. Chase Garrett Investigations appears in book #2 Beyond Danger, out next year. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see….
“With a chilling plot, non-stop adrenaline-pumping action and fast-paced dialogue, Martin’s latest B.O.S.S. Inc. novel is rock-solid. The complex ex-soldier hero and ex-teacher turned kick-butt bounty hunter heroine have combustible chemistry – and travel an explosive and bittersweet road to their HEA. The skillfully placed humor really lightens this extremely dark, suspenseful tale.”

At Brodie Operations Security Service, Inc., following your instincts is company policy . . . M. Cassidy—Luke Brodie had heard the name before, some novice bounty hunter working Seattle, catching tricky skips with more success than a newcomer should expect. But the dark curls, sparkly top, and impressive cleavage were not what Brodie had pictured. Emma Cassidy is tough and smart and sexy as hell. She’s also popping up a step ahead of him every time he’s close to the capture he wants most . . . and there’s no room for learning on the trail of this monster.
