  • A Reader's Opinion: THE BEAUTY OF LOVE by Dorothy Wiley

A READER'S OPINION THE BEAUTY OF LOVE is only the second book I've read by this author, but now I'm determined to go through and read the full American Wilderness series. In this story we meet Edward Wyllie and Dora Tudor, two people who are meant to be together. Of course, as they say, true love doesn't always come easy. I was pulled into the story from the first chapter filled with sadness, action, and hope. The author sets you on a roller-coaster from page one, which kept the story moving at a nice pace. The unfolding of events takes place gradually, leaving the reader to wonder what is coming next. This is a story about mending guilt and wounded hearts, learning to trust in yourself and in love, and of course, there's enough adventure and history mixed in to make this a truly interesting and enjoyable book. THE BEAUTY OF LOVE is a title that perfectly describes a story filled with faith, tenderness, and hope. Star Rating : 4 1/2 Stars | Content Rating : 4 Hearts | Reviewed by : Kaylie Morgan BUY AT AMAZON | VIEW OUR RATING SYSTEM Add to Goodreads BOOK SYNOPSIS Brought together after tragedy, Edward Wyllie and Dora Tudor find the true beauty of love in this poignant and thrilling historical romance set in 1800 Boston and New Hampshire. In an unlikely place for new beginnings, a cemetery, Edward and Dora meet for the first time. But in that forlorn place, the beauty of love blossoms. Edward is still struggling with guilt over the death of his family more than a year ago—a guilt so great he’s unable to even look at his childrens’ gravestones. As their friendship grows, Dora forces Edward to confront the truth—their deaths were not his fault. And Edward gives Dora, a young Boston widow, a chance to seize love and learn the meaning of passion. Inspired by history, Wiley’s books may all be read independently, including her highly-acclaimed debut novel WILDERNESS TRAIL OF LOVE, the first in her American Wilderness Series. • A Reader's Opinion: CAN'T FIGHT THIS FEELING by Miranda Liasson

A READER'S OPINION CAN'T FIGHT THIS FEELING is a terrific story by a talented author! Psychologist, widow, and mother, Maggie McShae is equally tough as she is fragile. She doesn't want someone who will knock her off her feet in love. She is ready to come of her shell and at least try to find someone, even if that someone isn't everything she could ever want. Maggie didn't expect someone like Drew Poulos to complicate her life. Drew Poulos comes across to Maggie as a typical, rich playboy, but Drew isn't all he seems or what Maggie expects . . . but maybe he's just right. Out of what could be desperation, Drew and Maggie team up to pull one over on some unsuspecting people. Unfortunately for Maggie, staying cool and detached isn't going to be easy. Not that you can blame her for weakening with a man like Drew nearby. So much family drama, and a few good laughs to go with it. The author has such a nice and easy writing style that I got lost in the story and kept reading into the late hours of the night. Miranda Liasson brings the reader to laughter and tears with her charming characters of Mirror Lake. • A Reader's Opinion: COVERT DANGER by Jo-Ann Carson

A READER'S OPINION Covert Danger is very reminiscent of the show, Covert Affairs. An empowered, strong woman uses her unique abilities to do what is right for her country. While on Sadie's journey, Ms. Carson allows you to visit various trip-worthy places: Amsterdam, Italy, Egypt, and New York City. The locations only add to the romance already building between the two main characters, Sadie and Sebastian. Their romance was of the James Bond insta-love connection type. The heat between the two of them was hot and got even hotter as the story progressed to a climactic explosion. She also exposes you to the art world—the legit and black market—the modeling profession, and the different areas of law enforcement—the CIA, the Interpol, Private Investigators, and former military. Sadie struggles during her journey to prove to herself and the CIA that she's a valuable spy and not only a pretty girl good at extracting info from the bad guys. Sebastian has to continually remind himself that Sadie is capable of taking care of herself and not in need of being rescued every moment. When they learn to work as a team, they become a force to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, the bad guy escapes their clutches and continues exacting his evil deeds. I am eager to read the entire series to learn if Sadie will catch her mouse. It is a regular "will she or won't she" catch the bad guy tale. Read Carson's Covert Danger if you want a spicy romance to go with your suspenseful adventure about spies and stolen artifacts. Beneath a dripping wet gray sweater several sizes too big, her uniform clung to her birdlike frame, an ugly pair of shoes on her feet. Her long, jet-black hair plastered to her head, Ava stared at him through the water streaming down her pale, gaunt face. Despite the changes to the woman he’d once loved more than life itself, he felt a familiar stirring, a familiar heat low in his belly. He was reacting to her as though nothing had changed. With her gaze riveted on the evidence of his body’s betrayal, embarrassment and anger coursed through him. “What the hell are you doing in here, Ava?” He shut off the water with such force that he nearly ripped the lever off the wall. Her impossibly green eyes jerked to his face, reminding him where they’d lingered only seconds before. Swearing under his breath, he covered himself with the shower curtain and then leaned to his right to grab two towels off the rack. He threw her one. She blinked and caught it before it hit her in the face. Reeling from the realization that he still wanted her, still felt something for her after all this time, he said through clenched teeth, “Get out. Now,” and wrapped the towel around his waist. “I...I’m sorry. I didn’t expect you so soon. I was…I was just cleaning the tiles.” Everything about her was foreign to him—the meek, stammering voice; the way she stood with her shoulders bowed; the raw, chapped hands that trembled as she brought the towel to her face. She looked exhausted, and she was lying. He opened his mouth to ask her what was going on. Then quickly closed it before he uttered the questions that had been eating at him since he saw her at his great-grandmother’s funeral. Are you okay? What happened to you? What can I do to take the shadows from under your eyes? It was no longer his job, no longer his right. He’d been there before, a long time ago. And all it had gotten him was a broken heart. It’d taken him years to recover. There’d been a time when he didn’t think he ever would. With Ava, he’d never again allow his heart to overrule his head. A READER'S OPINION Fantastic read! In Amber Daulton's first novella, Timeless Beginnings , we followed Leonora, who had fled from her new husband in 1725 and taken refuge in a cave where a cortex had sent her in the future to Bolivia in 1963. Now, in Timeless Honor , we meet her granddaughter, Jaye, who doesn't believe that time travel exists. Therefore, she leaves on vacation to Bolivia to find answers. To escape an undesirable match, Miss Notley must give up her riches for rags. When Miss Coralynn Notley’s father barters her off to the first titled gentleman to come along, she realizes she must flee her home or be forced to wed a despicable man. Driven by desperation, she applies for the position of housekeeper at Tanglewood Manor, the home of the handsome Mr. Jonathan Ludlow. The moment Jonathan sees Miss Notley, he is intrigued. She is far too young and inexperienced, yet there is something about her that that inspires a certain hope within him. Does he dare offer her the position of housekeeper or will doing so result in catastrophe? BUY @ AMAZON | ADD TO GOODREADS ENJOY AN EXCERPT from The Rise of Miss Notley Cora nodded and followed Mr. Ludlow into the parlor. He closed the doors and stood in front of them with his arms folded, looking far more intimidating than he had during their last meeting. He said nothing, merely lifted an inquiring eyebrow and waited. Caught unprepared, Cora stared at him, trying to organize her thoughts into words. After a few moments of awkward silence, he lost patience. “What is it you wished to speak with me about, Mrs. Notley? Or are we to stand here staring at each other all afternoon?” Not knowing how else to begin, Cora blurted, “Why have you hired me, sir?” He blinked a few times before frowning. “I believe I have made that perfectly clear. You are to be the housekeeper, are you not?” This was going to be more difficult than she had imagined. “Yes, of course, but there has been some talk about, or rather concerns expressed . . .” How did one put this delicately? “About . . .?” he prodded, obviously not thrilled that his morning regime had been waylaid. “About the reasons I have been offered the position,” she quickly said, hoping that would be enough to make him understand her meaning. Unfortunately, his brows drew together in confusion. “What are you saying, Mrs. Notley? I have hired you to do certain duties that will hopefully make my household run more smoothly. What other reason could I possibly have for offering you the position?” “You have hired me to do a job I am untrained to do,” she said. “While I am grateful for the opportunity, I also find it necessary to clarify that I have come here to be a housekeeper and only a housekeeper. Even though I am young and . . .” Her voice drifted off. Had she almost referred to herself as pretty? Goodness, this was proving to be very awkward indeed. “Beautiful?” he finally guessed, not looking at all pleased with the direction the conversation was taking. “I was going to say not repulsive,” she fibbed. “Very well,” he said. “Even though you are young and not repulsive . . .” He moved his hand in a circular gesture, urging her to finish her thought. Cora straightened her shoulders and forced herself to continue. “I am not the sort of girl who would ever . . . fraternize with her employer.” Her face infused with heat, but she forced her gaze to remain steady. “I see.” He walked slowly towards her, rubbing his chin with his hand. A few steps away, he stopped and eyed her quizzically. “Have I made any improper advances towards you?” “No, sir.” “Have I spoken to you in an unprofessional manner?” “No.” “Have I looked at you in a way that has made you feel uncomfortable?” “No.” Cora suddenly wished she had not felt the need to clarify anything. He made her feel as though she had put the cart before the horse when what she had been trying to do was see that the cart and horse simply stayed in their proper places. Was that so wrong? “Might I ask who, exactly, has led you to believe that I am the sort of man capable of—how did you put it? Fraternizing with my help?” “I, er, would rather not say, sir.” Though Cora felt no loyalty towards Sally, she refused to bring Mr. and Mrs. Shepherd’s names into the conversation. “I did not mean to besmirch your name or cause any offense, Mr. Ludlow. I merely wanted to make my feelings on the matter clear.” “And you have.” “Good.” Cora dropped into a quick curtsy, anxious to get away. “I shall go and find Watts now.” She was almost to the door when his voice stopped her. “Once again, you are attempting to scuttle away before we have completed our conversation.” Slowly, she turned around and lifted her eyes to his. “I never scuttle, sir.” “What would you call that rapid walk of yours?” “A rapid walk.” GIVEAWAY $50 Amazon Gift Card or Paypal Cash Giveaway Ends 3/15/17 Open only to those who can legally enter, receive and use an Amazon.com Gift Code or Paypal Cash. • A Reader's Opinion: LAST NIGHT WITH THE DUKE by Amelia Grey

THE BOOK A READER'S OPINION LAST NIGHT WITH THE DUKE introduces us to delightful characters in the first Rakes of St. James book. Esmeralda Swift owns a placement agency for governesses, chaperones, and such. She seems to be the perfect solution to the Duke of Griffin's predicament of finding a suitable chaperone for his two sisters. Esmeralda is an admirable character who takes care of her younger, charming sister. She can't risk anything going wrong but Griffin's offer is too good to pass up. Griffin was more charming than rakish and had a kind heart. After a slow start to the story with one conversation lasting many chapters, some mystery is implied about a prank Griffin and his two friends, also Rakes of St. James, played when they were younger. The mystery didn't really come about but maybe there will be more of that in the next two books. There is instant-love/lust and I wish the Esmeralda and Griffin had more time to get to know each other without so much back and forth. Most of the excitement took place in the last few chapters. The author has a nice and easy writing style that I enjoyed. This is a cute story that is typical of the genre. Most of the book was much cleaner than I expected, and I really appreciated that. Readers of historical romance are sure to appreciate the happily-ever-after ending. • Author Interview: INTO THE FIRESTORM by Author Kat Martin

Please join us in welcoming prolific and talented author, Kat Martin, to Books & Benches. We're going to visit about her latest thrilling and sexy romantic suspense, INTO THE FIRESTORM, book three of the BOSS, Inc. novels. "Kat Martin never fails to unshackle the reader's imagination and take them on a whirling roller-coaster of suspense and romance." — Books & Benches, Reviewer's Top Pick Q&A with KAT MARTIN MK: Into the Firestorm is one heck of a great ride. It has everything: action, suspense, and romance. Is it just as exciting for you to write these books as it is for us to read them? KAT: This particular book was. It is one of my all time favorites. Luke Brodie was just the most fun character. He’s gorgeous to look at, strong, smart, and unbelievably sexy. Some books are definitely more work than others. I loved the interaction between Luke and Emma. I hated to see this book end. MK: Into the Firestorm is your third novel in the highly successful BOSS, Inc. series, but this isn’t the first time we meet members of the Brodie family. Can you tell us a little about how this family came about? Did you know you’d be writing the BOSS, Inc. novels before you finished the Brodies of Alaska? KAT: I always have some idea what I’m going to write next. I was in the middle of Against the Sky , Nick Brodie’s story, when I got the idea for BOSS, Inc. (my editor’s clever title). Nick needed a place to move from Alaska with Samantha where they would be happy and he could find work. Seattle seemed perfect and he already had relatives there, Ethan and Luke. I started the Against series with three brothers, Jackson, Gabe, and Dev Raines. Book #1 was Against the Wind , set in Wyoming. From there, friends of the brothers kept popping up. Ty Brodie, a detective in L.A. was the first of the Brodie family. His cousin Dylan showed up in Against the Mark and he was amazingly sexy. Dylan was from Alaska, a state I completely love, so I gave Dylan two brothers and wrote their stories. The Brodies just seemed to expand. I’m going to miss them. MK: It’s known among your fans that you love to travel for both pleasure and research. What is one of your favorite travel research experiences? Where will your research take you to next? KAT: I went to England several time when I was writing historicals. The trip was arranged so I got to stay in bed and breakfasts that were up to 400 years old. It was an amazing experience. I’ve been to France a lot, incorporated some of that in Devil’s Prize . Currently I’m writing a trilogy set in Texas. Beyond Reason is the first, out in June. I desperately need to go to Dallas (though I have been there several times). I need to refresh my memory of the area and hey, Texas is always fun, right? MK: From seeing the first book in print to the glowing reviews we all hope for, but worry we won’t get, authors experience a multitude of highs and lows throughout their careers. Up to this point, what has been one of your greatest joys or experiences as a writer? KAT: Hitting the New York Times was one of my most thrilling moments. It took years to accomplish so it was a big celebration. Recently, I got a fantastic thrill when Into the Whirlwind was chosen by "Suspense Magazine" as one of the four best Romantic Suspense novels of 2016. The same week, KOBO reader chose Into the Fury as one of the best of 2016. I’m thrilled readers are enjoying the books so much. MK: In the past, you have also penned historical romance, and it all began with your very first novel, Magnificent Passage , set in the American frontier. What drew you to make the switch to contemporary romantic suspense? KAT: I no longer write historicals. After about 40 books, I was looking for a new challenge. I started writing Romantic Suspense along with the historicals in order to build an audience (and still get paid). I discovered I loved writing them. I like the freedom of writing in the present, the opportunity to go so many different places with the story line. I plan to keep on writing hunky men and the women who tame them. MK: What are you working on now and can readers expect more from the handsome and talented Brodies? KAT: In June, Beyond Reason , the first book in my Texas Trilogy comes out. Lincoln Cain is a multi-millionaire businessman. After 2 years in prison, he pulled himself out of the gutter and changed his life. He’s as tough as they come so Carly Drake, the woman who challenges him, is in for a rough ride. Luckily, she’s strong enough to handle him. Which is good because when she finds herself in the sites of a drug lord, she is discovers she needs Linc’s help. As far as the Brodies, I plan to write more gorgeous male detectives/bodyguards/bounty hunters in the future. I’m thinking three set in Texas might be fun. Chase Garrett Investigations appears in book #2 Beyond Danger, out next year. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see…. “With a chilling plot, non-stop adrenaline-pumping action and fast-paced dialogue, Martin’s latest B.O.S.S. Inc. novel is rock-solid. The complex ex-soldier hero and ex-teacher turned kick-butt bounty hunter heroine have combustible chemistry – and travel an explosive and bittersweet road to their HEA. The skillfully placed humor really lightens this extremely dark, suspenseful tale.” – RT Book Reviews, 4 Stars ABOUT THE BOOK Luke Brodie is a bounty hunter. THE BOOK A READER'S OPINION In this well-written and fast-paced novel by Charlie Donlea, author of SUMMIT LAKE, Livia Cutty lives with a tremendous guilt—she didn't answer the phone. A rookie forensic pathologist, Livia sets out to discover the truth about her sister's abduction. She turns to the now best-selling book written by Megan McDonald, the other girl who was taken that night. When Livia catches her first break after a body is fished from a bay and brought to the morgue, Livia has to unravel the numerous clues, even at times putting her own career in jeopardy while discovering truths about her sister she hasn't known. THE GIRL WHO WAS TAKEN is full of twists and turns—though somewhat improbable—right up to the end. I read SUMMIT LAKE the week before reading this book, and thought it was fantastic. I really like the author's writing style and the way he builds suspense. He creates well-developed characters that are easy to like, hate, relate to, or understand. Content Note: There are some visual images that may be disturbing to some readers. Except, like his first book, the author does a good job of portraying them without going into detail. When they disappear from a beach party one warm summer night, police launch a massive search. No clues are found, and hope is almost lost until Megan miraculously surfaces after escaping from a bunker deep in the woods. A year later, the bestselling account of her ordeal has turned Megan from local hero to national celebrity. It s a triumphant, inspiring story, except for one inconvenient detail: Nicole is still missing. Nicole's older sister Livia, a fellow in forensic pathology, expects that one day soon Nicole's body will be found, and it will be up to someone like Livia to analyze the evidence and finally determine her sister's fate. Instead, the first clue to Nicole s disappearance comes from another body that shows up in Livia's morgue that of a young man connected to Nicole's past. Livia reaches out to Megan for help, hoping to learn more about the night the two were taken. Other girls have gone missing too, and Livia is increasingly certain the cases are connected. But Megan knows more than she revealed in her blockbuster book. Flashes of memory are coming together, pointing to something darker and more monstrous than her chilling memoir describes. And the deeper she and Livia dig, the more they realize that sometimes true terror lies in finding exactly what you've been looking for. • A Reader's Opinion: GUESSING AT NORMAL by Gail Olmsted

THE BOOK A READER'S OPINION GUESSING AT NORMAL is the story of Jill Griffin and James Sheridan. Jill wasn't always sure what to expect out of life, but dating a rock star wasn't on the list. They have a difficult relationship of ups and downs, and a lot of it isn't pretty, at least what we get to read. This book touches on a lot of real-life issues that I applaud the author for addressing, but it didn't draw me in as I thought it would, and it could have used a little more polish. There are a lot of struggles that both Jill and James have to face as they plunge into life and try to find a way to have their own careers without driving the other away. Is it possible? In life, not always. I had trouble with their relationship for a few reasons. Their initial meeting was believable and sweet in some ways, but as the story moved along, I kept thinking that Jill would be better off without James, especially after so many years. Written almost entirely from Jill's perspective, the author created an interesting story in GUESSING AT NORMAL. Small town girl Jill Griffin has mastered the art of being invisible, so when she falls in love with sexy rocker James Sheridan, at first she is content to live in his larger than life shadow. Building a life together under the glare of the media is challenging, and further complicated by constant touring, James’ partying and the mixed signals she gets from James’ twin brother Alex. What is that guy’s problem? When her poems and journal ramblings become the songs on James’ best-selling album, Jill has to step out of her comfort zone and figure out how to live her life in a spotlight all her own. As her professional success as a songwriter threatens her relationship with James, Jill begins to wonder if she can write love songs without the love of her life.
