  • "Fabulous" - Hellalyle and Hildebrand by Tagai Tarutin - Excerpt

“A fabulous story that could be easily transformed into a screen version, about a truly romantic relationship beyond any prejudice, driven by pure intentions at the times when the chivalry and nobleness made the difference in survival of a human life.” — Anatoly Leonidovich Rasputin, graduate in English from the University of Linguistics, Nizhny Novgorod, Russia Hellalyle and Hildebrand Hellalyle and Hildebrand, were drawn into a relationship engineered by those same unseen forces who had selected her bodyguard; their purpose, to thwart the devil, incarnate in Prinz Paulus, in its attempts to kill the princess. A downs-syndrome girl of mysterious origins, named Ethla, emerges out of the wildwood. She is taken care of by Princess Hellalyle. and plays a crucial part in the narrative. The king, while away, learns of the developing relationship between his daughter and the leader of her bodyguard, and feels betrayed by the English knight, and so dispatches his champions – his seven sons, and Paulus - to arrest, and execute Hildebrand, and confine Hellalyle until the king`s return. The eleven, remaining protectors of the princess, leave the kingdom, believing their contract has been nullified by Thorstiens edict, leaving Hildebrand alone to face Hellalyle`s brothers and step-brother. The Englishman takes the fight to his adversaries, and slaughters all the unfortunate siblings of the princess, except Paulus, who after surrendering to Hildebrand, turns about and treacherously kills him, and then brutally, incarcerates his step-sister. As these occurrences were unfolding, in another part of the continent, one of her bodyguards, the Teutonic knight, Karl von Altenburg, now living in a monastic order, experiences a vision, informing him of Hellalyle`s plight, and sets out to for Castle Preben. Meanwhile, in her prison, Hellalyle gives birth to Hildebrand`s son, now sole heir, whom she names Hagen. On a fateful day, Ethla, at the princess’s urging, flees into the wilderness, taking to safety, the infant crown prince, to save him from Prinz Paulus, who, feeling outwitted mortally wounds the princess in revenge. Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Bookshop "A beautiful love story of a medieval knight and a noble princess written by Tagai Tarutin. The book allows us to go back in history and hear more about the exploits of the legendary Hildebrand and his beloved Hellalyle. The book is full of picturesque scenes of the events in Medieval Europe and it gives us the opportunity to immerse in the spirit of those times. It will be a good read for those interested in history, literature and romance..." — Alexandra Suyazova, Teaching Fellow of English, Saint Petersburg, Russia Enjoy an Excerpt from Hellalyle and Hildebrand In the great hall, Hellalyle, on hearing the news that her brothers were coming to arrest Hildebrand, pleaded with him to leave. “Hildebrand, you must leave – my father has dispatched my brothers to seize you. Our relationship has set in motion a fait accompli, and now your life is in great danger.” However, Hildebrand, staring into the fire, was in no mood to listen to her pleading, saying, “Whatever the other knights decide to do, I cannot in all consciousness allow myself to abandon you to an uncertain fate, as I feel responsible for this dire situation.” Hellalyle, in desperation, pleaded, “Will you, please, be sensible! You cannot defeat eight armed men! Remember, these are my brothers, and at the end of the fight you will lie dead, and so will most of my brethren, and for what end? My family destroyed, and Prince Hildebrand ignominiously buried in a foreign field, which will be a tragedy for the English nation, and it will not end there, as I feel further calamity awaits those remaining at this fortress.” “Fate must run its course!” exclaimed the defiant knight, raising his voice. “If you think I will deliver you into the hands of Paulus, you gravely underestimate me. No greater evil walks the land, and he will surely die on the blade of my sword! As for my remains lying beneath the woodland floor, that holds no fear for me, as you have introduced this knight to the beauty of nature, and honour awaits if wild creatures should walk across my grave!” The soldier’s expose of his inner self prompted Hellalyle to gently grasp his forearm, in a gesture of empathy to his plight, with a pained expression etched on her face. The other bodyguards met to decide on what action to take considering the king’s command, knowing that they must not obstruct. All – save one – agreed that they should depart, convinced their contract with the monarch was severed by these unfortunate events. Von Altenburg, at first, declined to abandon his friend. He was fearful for the safety of the princess, but he eventually conceded, opting to join his comrades in arms. News of their impending departure reached Hellalyle, who decided to visit them. In a fractured voice, she addressed the company. “Honoured knights, whom I might almost regard as my brothers and such gallant men, warriors of the Christian church…my heart is about to break. I stand here now imploring you to persuade Hildebrand to leave at once with his fraternal fighters, for if he were to stay, I fear that some tragedy may befall him and my family.” Her impassioned speech prompted the knight von Streitz to say, “He appears to be deaf to our pleading, Your Highness! What more can we do to sway him?” Hellalyle, almost in despair, raised her hands to her face and burst into tears. All eleven knights, embarrassed, kept their eyes fixed on the ground before stealing past her prostrate figure, anxious to avoid an uncomfortable situation. As they rode from the castle, von Altenburg lingered to pay one last visit to Hellalyle and Hildebrand. Entering a chamber, he observed them by the window, Hildebrand pacing up and down, stabbing the floor with his sword, in apparent frustration, the princess standing in sombre contemplation of the densely wooded prospect below. They were all alone as she had sent her staff to the safety of the kitchens. As they turned to face him, von Altenburg became struck by their dramatically altered demeanour. The once-resolute Prince of England now despondent and downcast; and Hellalyle, her face once so radiant now shut down, her eyes that brightly sparkled now eclipsed. She appeared almost lifeless. • "Sensational" - His Castilian Hawk by Anna Belfrage - Interview and Excerpt

For bastard-born Robert FitzStephan, being given Eleanor d’Outremer in marriage is an honour. For Eleanor, this forced wedding is anything but a fairy tale. His Castilian Hawk Robert FitzStephan has served Edward Longshanks loyally since the age of twelve. Now he is riding with his king to once and for all bring Wales under English control. Eleanor d’Outremer—Noor to family—lost her Castilian mother as a child and is left entirely alone when her father and brother are killed. When ordered to wed the unknown Robert FitzStephan, she has no choice but to comply. Two strangers in a marriage bed is not easy. Things are further complicated by Noor’s blood-ties to the Welsh princes and by covetous Edith who has warmed Robert’s bed for years. Robert’s new wife may be young and innocent, but he is soon to discover that not only is she spirited and proud, she is also brave. Because when Wales lies gasping and Edward I exacts terrible justice on the last prince and his children, Noor is determined to save at least one member of the House of Aberffraw from the English king. Will years of ingrained service have Robert standing with his king or will he follow his heart and protect his wife, his beautiful and fierce Castilian hawk? Goodreads | Amazon Enjoy an Excerpt from His Castilian Hawk EXCERPT in which Robert bids his wife farewell before riding out to war . . . Robert was up at the crack of dawn. The rain had abated, and for a couple of hours he had his men busy themselves with preparations while he oversaw the loading of victuals onto a couple of packhorses—a cart would not get far in the mountainous terrain of Wales. By the time they came in to break their fast, Noor was already in the hall. She served him herself, placing a platter of smoked fish and bread in front of him. No words, they just sat side by side, holding hands under the table. And then it was time to leave. Robert ordered his men outside but lingered in the hall, reluctant to leave the warmth and his wife. From outside came the sound of men and horses, and there was no point to further delaying, not when the moment of farewell was upon them. Noor accompanied him outside, fingers clutching his. Down the steps that led from the hall, there was Elias, holding Mars. Robert took a deep breath and turned to his wife. “Be careful,” she said, stroking his cheek. “Come back safe and sound to me.” “I will,” he promised, knowing just how futile his promise was. It was all in the hands of the Lord—and maybe his king. Robert could do nothing but obey his orders and hope he’d emerge from every fray alive and essentially unharmed. “And you must take care of yourself, my heart.” She blushed, her eyes glistening. She nodded in response. Robert took her hand and kissed each finger in turn before lifting her chin so that he could press a kiss to her lips. A chaste thing, him far too aware of their audience, of just how close Noor was to tears. “I have something for you,” he murmured. “Another collar?” she teased, and he was grateful for her attempt to lighten the mood. He glanced at Gawain, presently wearing his new collar. The hound looked none too happy about it, his hind leg coming up regularly to scratch at his neck. “No. This is for you, my hawk.” He dug into his pouch, his hands closing round the smooth white stone he had found so many years ago on the shore of the Holy Land. He had just been laughed out of Yasmine’s room, she telling him he need not come back if he intended to subject her to his lovesick spouting, and instead of returning to his lodgings he had ended up by the sea north of Acre, having first snuck out through St Anthony’s gate. He pulled out the stone and opened his hand. Like a little white heart, it lay on his palm, as bright as when he’d first found it and veined with thin lines of red and black. “I’ve carried this with me for longer than I’ve had my leather surcoat,” he said. “I never found someone to give it to before.” “A stone?” But her finger followed its shape. “A heart.” He cleared his throat. “My heart.” The look she gave him made his throat constrict. In those beautiful dark eyes, he could see just how much she loved him, and that single tear running down her cheek had him reaching out to catch it. “Don’t weep, little hawk,” he said. “I cannot bear it.” “I’m not weeping.” She ducked her head and scrubbed at her face. “It is just the wind making my eyes water.” He smiled. “There is no wind.” He handed her the stone. “Then it must be a speck of dust.” She straightened up, still as short as when he’d first met her, still soft and round. But his Noor was different from the maid he’d wed less than a year ago: she had grown into a young woman, alluring curves hiding a centre of steel. A wife to be proud of, he reflected. A wife to love and cherish, he added as an afterthought when she embraced him as if she would never let him go. “God keep you,” she said, releasing him. “And you.” He pressed a kiss to her forehead and stepped back, only to bump into Gawain. “Take care of your mistress,” he said to the dog, scratching it behind the ears. Gawain gave him an aloof look, eyes the colour of amber staring straight through him. Excerpt Copyright © Anna Belfrage. Shared with permission for blog tour. In the author's words . . . Interview with Anna Belfrage What makes His Castilian Hawk special or unique to you? The first time I knew I was going to write a book set in the late 13th century was when I first read about the death of Llywellyn the Last (Prince of Wales) in 1282. Poor man: recently widowed, distraught by his loss, and his hot-headed brother somehow manages to embroil Llywellyn in a fight with England that there’s no chance in hell he can win. I wasn’t sure how I was going to write it until the day Robert FitzStephan popped into my head with all his baggage and his fair mistress Edith—who turned out to be anything but fair by the time the story was done! Anyway: Robert has served King Edward of England loyally since he was twelve and is therefore rewarded with a landed wife. Eleanor (Noor) d’Outremer—Robert’s “reward”—is young and very alone in the world. She also has Welsh kin, and is not quite as impressed by King Edward as Robert is. In fact, Noor will do whatever it takes to save one innocent Welsh child from the king’s wrath. his puts Robert in a difficult position: to whom does he owe his ultimate loyalty? To the king he has served so faithfully since he was a boy or to the dark-eyes young girl who is growing into an admirable woman? Things ar further complicated by Edith who will do whatever it takes to rid herself of Noor—even more so when she realizes Robert has fallen in love with his wife. What type of hero do you like best? Physically, I find myself always writing heroes who are pretty big—tall, broad-shouldered and the like. I think this is because I rather like the idea of being able to (vicariously, obviously as my characters never materialize in the flesh) snuggle into the warm chest of my male characters and feel completely protected. I like heroes who are dependable, men of convictions and ideals. I like it if they’re a bit too set in their beliefs initially so that my female protagonists can work their magic and broaden their horizons. All my heroes are honourable. They would die defending those they love. They may be products of their time, but they never belittle their women, even if at times they are overprotective. While their lives require that they be tough, my heroes are brave enough to expose their more vulnerable sides to the woman they’ve given their heart to. Do you believe in the concept of a muse? What is yours like? Ha! Do I believe in a muse? Oh, yes, I most certainly do. Ms Inspiration is a lady who has a preference for dramatic clothing, lots of leather and the occasional whip which she slaps against her boot when she feels I am slacking. She presents me with a constant stream of potential stories and gets very irritated when I don’t immediately start tapping away like crazy. “But I’ve already given you a male protagonist,” she’ll grumble. “Look, he’s perfect!” (This is when she bats her eyes at the as yet unknown male protagonist) “Yeah, but I’m not sure I want to write a story about…” “Fiddlesticks! Of course you do!” “Err…” I study the shadowy male outline. Seriously, 16th century? No, not for me. “Now, you listen to me,” (slap, slap goes the whip) “Not everyone has a muse like me! So stop arguing and start writing!” She gestures at the man. “And just look at those legs, absolutely gorgeous in hose!” I won that discussion. Well, sort off. That shadowy male is the protagonist of my romantic suspense series, but without the puff hose. Instead, Jason meets the world in jeans or bespoke suits. “Thank God for that,” he mutters. Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you? Usually, one scene kicks off a new WIP. Once I have that scene down, I will sit back and draw up an outline, but I have learned the hard way that nothing ever happens according to the outline. It helps me set the initial chapters, but once the story takes off, that outline is history. In my present WIP, I was SO sure I had found my antagonist in a terrible scene in which my male protagonist is maimed. Three chapters later, the intended antagonist has become a victim, so there went that outline. I still think the outline helps as it offers some initial structure, but I have to own the fact that I am more of a “pantser” than a “plotter”. ( Ms Inspiration snorts—loudly. “No discipline,” she mutters. I’d disagree. “Pantsers” are just as disciplined as “plotters”—it’s just that the creative process works differently) What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book? The toughest challenge was getting Robert’s character arc right. He doesn’t exactly endear himself to his new wife or the reader (or the writer!) initially. There are reasons for his behaviour, starting with the fact that the concept of having a wife is totally unfamiliar to him. Robert never expected to marry well as he is no catch himself. Bastard-born, all he knows how to do is fight on behalf of his king, and suddenly here he is, married to a much younger woman who comes with manors and lands. Still, this does not excuse how he humiliates poor Noor. But Robert is basically a good man and I had to give him the opportunity to vindicate himself . Along the way, Robert discovers love—for the first time in his life. *sighs happily* I think I managed to make Robert credible and relatable—ultimately, though, that’s up to the readers to decide! The Author Had Anna been allowed to choose, she’d have become a time-traveller. As this was impossible, she became a financial professional with two absorbing interests: history and writing. Anna has authored the acclaimed time travelling series The Graham Saga, set in 17th century Scotland and Maryland, as well as the equally acclaimed medieval series The King’s Greatest Enemy which is set in 14th century England. More recently, Anna has published The Wanderer , a fast-paced contemporary romantic suspense trilogy with paranormal and time-slip ingredients. While she loved stepping out of her comfort zone (and will likely do so again ) she is delighted to be back in medieval times in her September 2020 release, His Castilian Hawk . Set against the complications of Edward I’s invasion of Wales, His Castilian Hawk is a story of loyalty, integrity—and love. Find out more about Anna on her website or on her Amazon page . • "Magnificent" - Lachlann's Legacy by Ashley York - Interview

Hidden secrets could tear them apart as fast as their passion drove them together. Lachlann's Legacy On the Moray coast in Scotland… Ethne’s genuine and caring nature makes her invaluable to her brother as his son’s caretaker, but he and his wife treat her as little more than their servant. When she learns their tribal leader would use her chaste status for his own purposes, Ethne plans to escape and reluctantly accepts the help of Lachlann—a handsome pilgrim she only just met at the local faire. Despite her independent spirit, Ethne feels drawn to Lachlann. Her instincts say his intentions are honorable, but can she trust him with her heart? Raised by his godfather with few clues to his family’s past, Lachlann values his freedom and the brotherhood of his highlander kin. Disguised as a pilgrim on a mission for the priory, he encounters Ethne, a warm, intelligent maiden whose courage in the face of a loveless marriage awakens an intense need to protect her. Unfortunately, Ethne is one of the very people he must deceive to explore the cave system containing clues to the lost treasure he seeks. But he cannot abandon her to an uncertain fate—or deny the simmering tension between them. With religious prejudice running high and both of them facing tests of loyalty, Lachlann and Ethne may realize the only way to fight for their futures is to surrender... to each other. Goodreads | Amazon | Apple | Kobo | Barnes & Noble | BookBub In the author's words . . . What I loved the absolute most about writing this book was the research. I got to stroll along the beach of the northern coast of Scotland on a gorgeous summer day, seeking out the caves and hill that created Ethne's home. Priceless! An Interview with Ashley York What inspired you to write this book? I really enjoy hearing from my readers all the time, and this one particular reader is the reason Lachlann's story came to be. These three Highlanders first appear in The Gentle Knight , book 2 of the Norman Conquest Series. Lachlann is particular is an important part since he's the one who aids the hero (Peter) in his quest to bring the heroine (Brighit) safely to the Prior where she'll be taking her vows as a nun. What can we expect from you in the future? Lachlann's Legacy is about three friends, Lachlann, Aldred, and Niall’s, who have accepted a mission for the church to find silver that had been hidden hundreds of years earlier. It had been hidden to protect it from the raiding "Vikings" but ends up never being returned. Clues are found in this story that propel us to the next story about Aldred. One reviewer mentioned that it's going to be a hard story to write. I think because he's a difficult character to like. I will remind you, however, that Sean who first appears as a rival to Peter in The Gentle Knight ends up a great overking and ends up with his own series, The Warrior Kings . There are few characters that cannot be redeemed by the right circumstances...although I may have finally created one in Lachlann's Legacy who hails from the Orkney Islands. You'll have to let me know if you agree after you read it :) Do you have any “side stories” about the characters? In a way this question sort of overlaps with another question, What did you edit out of this book? Side stories are often background about the characters that the author knows but they won't necessarily make it into the book. I have a lot of side stories and cutting them out is sometimes the hardest part! I'm getting better at it though...I think. And my amazing editor, Cindy Vallar, shows no mercy which keeps the pace moving along and makes the story that much better. Besides, certain side stories may still come to light in another book. What is your favorite part of this book and why? I think the favorite part(s) of this book are the interaction between my hero, Lachlann, and the heroine's nephew, Finn. He's a precocious little boy who has very strong opinions about everything especially Lachlann. They build a close friendship that comes easy to both of them which is the opposite of how it goes for Ethne. Children can be more open and just be themselves whereas adults sometimes have roles they need to keep up that make it more difficult to trust people. Trust is definitely an important part of the whole story. How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book? Lachlann, Niall, and Aldred were characters first introduced in The Gentle Knight where they were much younger and carefree. Niall's story about his father being banished from the clan and falling on hard times came to light in The Irish Warrior . He was willing to marry his daughter, Thomasina, off to pay his debts. I thought this was a pretty compelling story and wanted to explore it more. Niall must eventually be accepted back into the clan but at what price? With this "trilogy" I can explore that more. I also needed a storyline that could carry through all three stories so I could concentrate on each of their HEA's but have this one journey be the thing that connects them all. be such a big challenge that it would last over the three books I'd envisioned for my "three Highlanders" and this was the perfect journey Who designed your book covers? My beautiful cover was designed by Wicked Smart Designs and what a pleasure it was to work with them. Nothing was a hassle. Everything went smoothly. She was a true professional. I've even had her put a face lift on the covers for my first series, Norman Conquest and I absolutely adore them. They'll be revealed soon so stay tuned. "If you love Scottish adventures, then you'll love this one." — Goodreads review The Author Award-winning author Ashley York writes historical romance full of passion and intrigue set in 11th and 12th century Ireland, Scotland, and England where life was wild and survival was never guaranteed. Whether it's in the mysterious ring forts of Ireland, the romantic Scottish Highlands, or the battle fields of Hastings, her characters fight hard and play hard. Good or evil, primary or secondary, they'll yank at your emotions and make it hard to put her books down. Passionate about history and research, York may tweak some historical facts (like the location of the Baron's Rebellion) but the flavor of the time is undeniable. With heroes and heroines you'll want to read about again and again, her stories are fresh and unpredictable but still finish with a satisfying HEA. • "Captivating" - The Tobacconist's Wife by AnneMarie Brear - Interview

From the bestselling author of The Slum Angel . The Tobacconist's Wife Having lost her father, Thea Goodson is alone in the world. It is true she has a husband, but Ernie is a brutal man, more inclined to use his fists to keep Thea in line than to build on their marriage. And besides, Ernie Goodson has secrets – secrets that even his wife cannot share. But in Victorian Yorkshire, appearances must be kept up, so Thea goes on powdering her bruises and forcing a smile as she toils in Ernie’s home and tobacco shop. There seems to be no other option. That is, until a handsome and well-bred stranger arrives to set up shop next door… Can Thea escape her misery and break from the conventions of society? Or will the clutches of her abusive husband confine her forever? The Tobacconist’s Wife is the latest book from AnneMarie Brear, the highly acclaimed author of bestselling The Slum Angel . Goodreads | Amazon In the author's words . . . Interview with AnneMarie Brear Books & Benches: From what we've heard, this is a book to definitely give a chance, and we're thrilled to be a part of spreading the word about The Tobacconist's Wife . It's nice to get to know the authors behind the books a bit better, so let's here from AnneMarie . . . Please tell us a little about your newest release. My newest release, The Tobacconist’s Wife, is about Thea who married a man she didn’t love because she was alone in the world. However, the man who she thought he was turned out to be nothing like that and instead is a bully and horrible person. Unexpectedly she meets Adam and he changes her life, but she is trapped in a marriage and sees no future for them. It’s a journey of love and sacrifice in the face of danger. What do you hope readers will take away from this story? I hope they take away the sense of enjoyment, of having grown to care for Thea and Adam and want them to succeed. I write stories for entertainment, but maybe this story might help other women to be strong and fight for what they want. Do you have to be alone or have quiet to write? Yes, I like to be alone in my study when writing, though I do have my daughter’s two dogs which like to be my companions throughout the day. I don’t find I write well when there’s people in the house and/or noise. To emerge into another time I like to concentrate and and I can’t do that when there’s too much background noise or people chatting. So I write when I’m alone in the house. What type of hero do you like best? I write historical so I like strong heroes who have flaws. He can’t be perfect, as that’s not realistic and it’s boring. I like a man who can look after himself as well as a lady but who also respects her independence and her own strength of character. What do you think about when you are alone in your car? If I’m not singing at the top of my voice, then I’m planning scenes in my head, thinking of possible new stories. I sometimes get to my destination and not remember much of the journey! Books & Benches: Thank you, AnneMarie! By the way, behind this blog are authors, and we totally get the "not remember much of the journey," part of driving as we plot scenes. • "Cozy" - A Hartmann Ranch Christmas by Samantha St. Claire - Excerpt

You're invited to an old-fashioned Dickens' Christmas where Lena, Maddie, and Jessie are planning a party like Mr. Fezziwig's from "A Christmas Carol". A Hartmann Ranch Christmas Idaho 1891 - It's Christmas at The Hartmann Guest Ranch, and along with getting ready to celebrate the holiday in grand style, Jessie and Maddie are playing matchmakers for their new Scottish shepherd, Graham Kincaid and Maddie's bookshop clerk, Clara Webster. Although the two can't seem to agree on much, including the Dickens' Christmas window display, the ladies are convinced they're perfect for each other. All they have to do is convince them. Come along! There'll be puppies, old friends, young lovers, delicious pastries from Jessie's kitchen, those rambunctious twins, and so much fun! Amazon | Goodreads “I found much to love about this cozy story, laid as it is like a quilt over the Sawtooth Mountain landscape: the bustling township, the lively environ of the Hartmann Guest Ranch, wagon rides amid falling snow, the quiet dimness of a hay-scented barn. The story is a treat, and I’m sure you will enjoy the references to literary works of the era tucked in here and there by Miss St. Claire. I truly hope you will indulge yourself in the fun of A Hartmann Ranch Christmas , where, eventually, 'all is merry and bright'." — Goodreads Review Enjoy an excerpt from A Hartmann Ranch Christmas Chapter One Monday, December 2, 1891 With her bright eager face, effusive smile, and aggravating efficiency, Clara Webster was the last person Maddie Reynolds wanted to greet her this morning. With neither her breakfast nor her mood refusing to settle, Mrs. Reynolds found her bookshop assistant’s cheerful enthusiasm more than annoying. The dog sitting by her side, less so, but only slightly less. Not even a kitten could improve her mood this morning. For a moment, standing there at the open door with her hand resting on the doorknob, she considered returning home and having one more cup of tea with her handsome husband, Dr. David Reynolds. But even his good humor had not set well with her as they breakfasted together. He’d had the poor judgement to make light of her surliness, reminding her of her condition, the infuriating but oh-so rational explanation for everything she was feeling these recent weeks. Mood swings, he’d said, were not uncommon. And without the least effort to sympathize, he had the audacity to laugh! No, she wouldn’t go back to the house. Christmas was only a month away, and she had grand plans for her bookstore. Convincing Mrs. Wilkinson to sell the store to her had been only the first step. The second was to hire an assistant. The petite bundle of enviable energy who stood before her now, offering a cup of steaming coffee was she. The cup, at least, was welcome, and she accepted it. “Thank you, Clara.” She sniffed at the steam rising from the cup. “It almost smells enticing.” Excerpt Copyright © Samantha St. Claire. • "Heartwarming" - Dreaming of Tomorrow by Michelle De Bruin - Excerpt

Love leads them to a lifetime of commitment where the dreams they have held onto for so long start to come true. Dreaming of Tomorrow Popular and eligible, Logan De Witt must convince the women in town that he is engaged to be married. A quiet, simple ceremony is what he has in mind for his wedding day, but when the date and time of his bride’s arrival is published in the newspaper, the whole town joins in the celebration proving to Logan and his new wife their sincere friendship and support. Added to the excitement of Logan’s marriage is the question of what the congregation should do with the unexpected donation of an orchard. Karen Millerson is counting the days until her long-distance engagement comes to an end and she may travel to Oswell City to marry Logan. More than anything, she wants to share in his life as a help and support, but keeping a house and finding her place in the community requires much more work than she ever expected. Learn, laugh, and love with Karen and Logan as they start a new marriage and work together ministering to the citizens of their small town. Goodreads | Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Book Depository Enjoy an Excerpt from Dreaming of Tomorrow “You’ve been to the lake again.” Julia clasped Karen’s shoulders and smiled at her. “How can you tell?” The lakeshore served as her own personal retreat. Too baffled by her sister’s insightful discovery, Karen didn’t think to conceal her afternoon wanderings. “You look relaxed and happy. The only other time I’ve seen you that way since your return to the city was at our picnic luncheon with Aunt Fran on the beach in June.” Julia settled three-year-old Ben into a chair and then sat next to him. “Oh.” Karen claimed the chair beside her sister. Whatever defensiveness had crept into her voice a moment ago drained away. She leaned forward and waved at Ben. “Hello there, young man.” He returned her wave and giggled. “Missing him, aren’t you?” Julia looked at her with concern. “Terribly.” Karen lowered her voice to a whisper. “I never wanted this teaching job. I only took it because the salary will give us a good start to our marriage.” “Very noble and worthwhile in the end. You’ll see.” Julia patted her knee below the table. The word noble fit her fiancé much better than it did any of her actions. Logan was a hero, investing all of his savings in freeing his mother from debt during his stay on the farm in Silver Grove. He never discussed finances in his letters, but he didn’t need to. Karen knew enough about the sacrifices he’d made to believe that his return to Oswell City meant starting over, building his stability a little at a time until finally positioned to support a wife. Not only was he noble and heroic, but he was handsome too. The wind at the lake today would have tousled his blond hair into a wave that fell over his forehead, giving him a boyish, mischievous charm that matched his usual good humor and twinkling blue eyes. Those same eyes could look right into her heart with a sensitivity that convinced her beyond words of his love for her. Excerpt Copyright © Michelle De Bruin. Shared with permission for blog tour. • "Great Mystery" - Sprinkled with Sabotage by Allison Pearl - Interview

“Making it in the craft is being brave enough to take something from your brain, put it on paper and show it to somebody.” —Allison Pearl on making it as an author Sprinkled with Sabotage Lizzy Bennet loves life as a lawyer in the city. And not just because of the miles it puts between her and her ex. However, when she’s attacked on the street just hours after learning her identity was stolen, she tries to call home for help and ends up with the last person she expects: the very same high school boyfriend who broke her heart. He says he’s there to help, but she’s not so sure, and now, all the endless questions and regrets are clouding her judgment and preventing her from seeing the dangerous saboteur closing in. Small-town auto mechanic, Koby Knightly, is looking forward to seeing a car show in the city. But when an unexpected call from his old girlfriend disconnects suddenly, he rushes to her aid. Throwing his plans out the window, Koby makes it his mission to protect her and discover the identity of the person trying to frame her. Will he also be able to figure out what went wrong between them back in high school or will a killer get to her first? Goodreads | Amazon In the author's words . . . Q&A with Allison Pearl Does writing energize or exhaust you? It does both. And somehow it does it at the same time. There are times during a first draft, when everything is so new, that I’ll sit down and start typing and the next time I look up hours have passed. I feel like I could write forever and what’s more is that I want to. I want to push through until I can write ‘The End.’ But on the second through fifteenth drafts—not an exaggeration—it feels like I’m constantly running up hill. My body is tired. My brain is telling me to stop. I need a break. But I know that when I reach the top, I’ll be in love again and ready to do it all over. How does your faith inform your writing? I don’t know that it informs my writing, it’s more like it’s woven into the fabric of it. It’s through my faith that I see and navigate the world. I couldn’t separate it from my books even if I wanted to. And I don’t. I want to write as well as read stories of characters that share my faith facing interesting, difficult, or seemingly impossible challenges. I want people to discover God, question God, and just be real. Because we can’t love God until we can be honest with Him. Books & Benches: Beautifully put, Allison! If you were to genre-hop, which genres would you most like to try writing? I think I would go full sci-fi/fantasy. My book shelf proportions largely favor those genres. I seem to always have a Stephen King on my nightstand or whatever new fantasy novel is out at a given time. I love the near infinite directions those authors can take a story. There’s always something new or haunting that sticks with you long after you turn the last page. Do you prefer writing in silence or to music? I cannot write in silence. If I tried, I’d probably bite my nails to the cuticles while staring at a blank screen. That being said, I can’t listen to music with lyrics as I work either. The words distract me and I just end up doing karaoke at my desk. Movie soundtracks or classical is where I end up. If you’re a writer thinking about going that route though, beware. The wrong Hans Zimmer track might take your story somewhere you don’t want it to go. Books & Benches: Karaoke would definitely be distracting! :) Do you believe in the concept of a muse? Not for myself. I think inspiration is a choice. You have to be on watch for it. Actively looking for it. When I think of a muse, it takes the responsibility off of me and the motivation away. Instead of brainstorming or exploring, should I sit and wait for some magic muse before I can type or write a word? No. If you want to write a story, grab a pen and paper or a laptop and start writing. Find the story. Don’t wait for it to come to you. Books & Benches: Thank you for a lovely interview, Allison. A past that keeps Caroline from looking to a future with Luke. Can Caroline and Luke find their way to happily ever after? Or is the only thing keeping them from finding it, each other Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | Book Depository Apple | Kobo | Google "I absolutely LOVED this book! A sweet romance, an adorable little girl, Christmas on every page, and sentimental feelings throughout, this is a perfect book to jump start your Christmas season." — Goodreads review Enjoy an Excerpt from Selling Christmas From Chapter One Caroline The gravel crunched under the tires as Caroline’s car made its way up the long drive. As she reached the crest of the tree-topped hill, the driveway made a sharp turn to the right, then opened up to a small grassy field with an old but clean wooden house sitting squarely in the center of it. She pulled her car up to the side of the house and turned off the ignition. As she opened the door and swept her scarf around her neck, the cold air reddened her cheeks. She shivered. The small porch that led to the front door was bare but for a pile of firewood. Caroline shook her head. Curb appeal was always important when trying to sell a home, even if the curb was a mile from the front door. First impressions count, and this curb was lacking appeal. She turned the key in the lock, and as she pushed the door open, she was hit with a gush of warm air filled with the scents of gingerbread and pine cones. She smiled. This was more like it. She made her way through the house, smoothing the bedspreads and tidying pillows on chairs. As she straightened the table setting, there was a quiet knock at the front door. She ran her hands down her sides and put her friendliest smile on, then headed for the door. “Come in, Dave and Sandra,” she said as she swung open the door. Her clients entered. “Let me take your coats.” She hung them on the hooks just inside the foyer, hoping it would help them envision living there. “Caroline.” Sandra’s hands flew to her mouth. “It’s adorable.” “Wait until you see the kitchen,” she added, then held her hand out to the side, encouraging them to explore. Caroline followed them through the kitchen, emphasizing the retro appliances, and out the back door to a large patio overlooking an expansive yard with a peaceful brook running along the side. When they re-entered the house and passed through the living room, Sandra cuddled her growing belly in her hands and stopped, staring at the quaint space. “The piano would fit perfectly right there.” She pointed to the wall on the right. “A Christmas tree would be really lovely over there.” Caroline pointed to a corner between the fireplace and a wall with a large, picturesque window. Dave stepped in closer to Sandra and put an arm around her. “I can see us singing carols on Christmas Eve.” She leaned in and whispered something back to Dave. “I’m going to give you a few minutes to finish looking around and talk privately.” Caroline headed to the kitchen. She took a gingerbread cookie from the table and was about to take a bite when she realized it was in the shape of an elf. She giggled, then bit off his head. She passed the time staring out the window, appreciating the lush evergreen trees and watching the robins flit from one tree to another. “Caroline.” Dave stepped into the kitchen. “We’d like to put a bid on the house. It’s exactly what we’re looking for.” She smiled. “Of course. I have the paperwork in my bag.” As Dave and Sandra signed the house bid, Caroline glanced at her watch. It would only take her fifteen minutes to wind her way back down the drive, up the highway, and into town where she would meet Lauren for dinner. She waved goodbye as they drove off, then she locked up the house, heading on her way. Copyright © Angelina Goode. Shared with permission for blog tour. • "Stunning" - Where Butterflies Go by Debra Doxer - Interview

"A stunning and highly emotional read that will grab you from the start and not let go." — Passages to the Past Where Butterflies Go Meira Sokolow had the misfortune of being born to Jewish parents in Warsaw, Poland, in 1912. Before she took her first breath, her fate had been sealed. Residing in the Jewish Quarter of the city, Meira's early life was typical. She fell in love with a local boy, got married, and had a daughter. Then the German army marched into Warsaw and everything changed. Forced into the ghetto with her family, she found survival to be a daily struggle. Hunger, disease, and unimaginable cruelty were her stark realities. When the ghetto was purged and she was sent to a concentration camp, Meira still had her family, and that was all that mattered. Then the camp was liquidated, and only a handful of survivors remained out of thousands. Meira Sokolow was one of them. No longer a wife or mother, Meira emigrated to New York City. After World War II, the world wanted to move on and start a new chapter, but Meira couldn't turn the page so easily. She walked through her days alone, like a ghost with nothing to tether her to the earth. Then she met Max, a handsome American, who first mistook her for one of the boring socialites he encountered every day. He soon learned she was unlike anyone he had met before, seeing her strength and resilience, even when she couldn't. Max knew he could breathe life into her again, if only she would let him. Tragic and heartfelt, Where Butterflies Go is based on the harrowing true story of one woman’s survival during the Nazi occupation of Poland, and her struggle to find meaning in the aftermath. Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | Book Depository IndieBound | Apple | Kobo | Google In the author's words . . . Interview with Debra Doxer Books & Benches: Everything we're hearing about this book tells us it is a must read, and one that will cause our hearts to pound and eyes to tear up, but let's hear a little more from the author . . . What makes Where the Butterflies Go special or unique to you? Can you give us a little story behind the story? I’ve always known my extended family was smaller than most. I didn’t have any aunts and uncles and cousins spread out all over the place like most of my friends seemed to have. When I was older, I learned that my father’s side of the family was almost wiped out in the Holocaust. I knew the Holocaust was a terrible thing, but it seemed so removed from my world. It stayed that way until my great aunt came to visit when I was in junior high, and she showed us a scar she had on her arm. She also had a story about how she got that scar. It was when she was in a concentration camp during World War II. As she proceeded to elaborate, tears sprang to my eyes. After that, the Holocaust was no longer a nebulous thing to me. It was real and stark and terrible. Her story stayed with me, and as I grew older and heard about groups of Holocaust deniers or others who believed the death toll was exaggerated, I knew it was important for my great aunt’s story and stories like hers to be told. Which scene or chapter in the book is your favorite? I like one of the lighter scenes when Meira meets Max in New York City for the first time. It shows her spunk and her humor. I really enjoy writing scenes with romantic chemistry and underlying tension. Which scene was most difficult to write? All of the ghetto and concentration camp scenes were difficult to write, especially the very last scene that Tovah is in. That one was excruciating at times. To make it even harder on myself, I probably rewrote it six or seven times, trying to get it just right. What else have you written that our readers can learn more about? I’m probably most known for a YA paranormal romance trilogy called Remedy. The first book is Keep You from Harm , and it’s the story of a girl with the power to heal people. That series was the most fun I’ve ever had writing. Everything I ever wanted to be and every quality I wish I possessed was put into the main character. Her love interest is the typical arrogant bad boy with a heart of gold. The whole story is a high school fantasy come true. To this day, I love revisiting that series. If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why? I should probably say Jane Austen for Pride & Prejudice or Charles Dickens for A Tale of Two Cities , but instead I’m going to say Scott Smith for A Simple Plan . I’ve probably read A Simple Plan five times now. The plotting is absolutely perfect with not a single hole in sight. It’s fascinating how the story unfolds as you’re silently screaming at the characters not to do the thing you know will unravel everything. Every time I read it, I’m in awe of the effortlessness narration. In my opinion, if you like suspense novels, it’s about as perfect a story as anyone could write. I just love it! "I do not have enough words for how amazing and touching this book is. In the running for best book of 2020."— Erin, Where fiction meets reality The Author Debra Doxer was born in Boston, and other than a few lost years in the California sunshine, she has always resided in the Boston area. She writes fiction, technical software documents, illegible scribbles on sticky notes, and texts that get mangled by AutoCorrect. She writes for a living, and she writes for fun. • "Poignant" - The Waltz of Devil's Creek by Justine Carver - Excerpt

" The Waltz of Devil's Creek is a poignant and memorable tale that outshines the standard conventions of its genre." — The Booklife Prize The Waltz of Devil's Creek Judith Campbell is dying, and she cannot take the painful truth about where her son came from to the grave with her. While on her deathbed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1994, Judith tells him the tragic story of his conception, and which of two men his birth father could be: the young man who professed his love to her, or the pastor who assaulted her. Set in the Deep South in 1947, The Waltz of Devil's Creek digs into the dark crevices of racism and women's rights during a heated political climate in an era of segregation. Combined with Judith's lack of social stature, and at a time when reporting sexual assault was unheard of, every injustice is stacked against her from the very beginning. But there is a light in Judith's young life: her best friend, Joseph Bird, who has loved her since childhood. Joseph stands up for Judith when no one else will and proves that even in the darkest of times, a light is always burning. Goodreads | Amazon "The end... Was just something I didn't expect at all, and it broke my heart again. Thank you Justine Carver for such an amazing story. It was worth the wait." — Goodreads review Read an Excerpt from The Waltz of Devil's Creek “But Mrs. Bird,” I said, looking over at her, “God don’t want people like Pastor Allman.” She just looked at me for a moment, and then a smile slowly lit up her eyes again. “YOU COME ON OUT HERE BIRD!” The voice snapped Mrs. Bird and me from our moment, our heads simultaneously jerking toward the living room. When we heard Joseph’s feet stomping against the floor as he ran down the hallway, Mrs. Bird and I dropped the dishtowel and the plate and hurried out of the kitchen. “YOU GET YER DUMB A** OUT HERE!” a second voice shouted, “OR WE’RE COMIN’ IN TO GET YOU!” “That’s the Woodson brothers,” I told Joseph’s momma. “Don’t you go out there,” she warned him as he thrust his big feet into his shoes. “I mean it, Joseph, don’t you go out that door!” He flung the front door open anyway, and before he could step outside, the Woodson brothers jumped on him in the doorway. “Joseph!” I screamed. “Get out of my house!” his momma shrieked. The whole house shook as the three fought; a small table underneath the window beside the door fell over, shattering the flower vase atop it; fists swung and legs kicked, and cuss words flew. “You little piece of s***, you burned up my truck!” said the blonde-haired brother. “I’m gonna kick your n*** right up yer throat!” said the brown-haired one. “What tha h*** were you thinkin’ boy?!” Thwap! When his fist pulled back, his knuckles glistened with Joseph’s blood. “Let go of him! Let go! Let gooo!” I dug all ten of my fingernails into the blonde’s arm, trying to stop him from pulling Joseph out of the house. His momma was on the other side, screaming as she worked, unsuccessfully, to beat them off with a broom. The blonde shoved me away, and I fell onto my butt on the porch as they dragged Joseph down the steps and into the front yard. “Don’t you touch my son!” Mrs. Bird roared, and the broom came down hard on the brown-haired one’s back. He whirled around, seemingly unfazed by the blow, and yanked the broom from her hands and tossed it. They nearly beat Joseph unconscious. Mrs. Bird ran next door and called Sheriff Woodson, but he never showed; he’d stayed out of all the incidents between Joseph and his sons. But Joseph wouldn’t have had it any other way. • "Hooked" - Last Girls Alive by Jennifer Chase - Interview

"Totally loved this! The characters were amazing and drew me right in. This one cut deep on the emotional scale. Highly recommend this book." — NetGalley review, 5 stars Last Girls Alive Her pale skin looks like porcelain in the early morning light. Her fragile arms bent and crooked like a broken doll. Half-buried in the muddy earth and surrounded by puddles of water lies the naked body of a beautiful young girl... When Detective Katie Scott is called to the discovery of a young girl buried on the grounds of a former children’s home in Pine Valley, California, she’s hopeful it’s the end to a devastating cold case she’s been working on. No one has seen Candace Harlan since she ran away from Elm Hill Manor five years ago. Her death will be a tragedy, but it will also bring peace to those who miss her most. But the girl in the ground is not Candace. The victim is almost identical to Candace in every way, but fear grips Katie as she takes in the black ink that decorates the girl’s back – a terrifying message tattooed on her skin after she drew her last breath. Forcing down traumatic memories of losing her own parents, Katie is certain someone mistook this poor soul for Candace, and that this crumbling home for lost girls is at the heart of this terrible crime. She sets to work digging into the tragic history of the owners who lost so many children of their own and tracking down the last six residents and the staff who cared for them – but no one wants to talk, let alone remember. The next day, a second girl’s body is found down by the creek at high water, the same words etched into her skin. Katie’s worst fear is confirmed: someone is picking off the last of the Elm Hill girls one by one. But what does the tattoo mean? And what monster would target these innocent girls who have already been through so much? Katie must dig deep to confront her own fears and protect the vulnerable – but as the body count rises further, will there be anyone left to save? Goodreads | Amazon | B&N | Google | Apple | Kobo "I was hooked from the start. I couldn't stop reading. I just needed to find out what happens next with Katie and the case. Katie is a total badass…I loved the story sooo much… awesome book. I recommend it to everyone." — Mama Bear’s Book Shelf, 5 stars "A nail biting, suspense packed action crammed thriller that keeps you on edge." —Amazon review, 5 stars In the author's words . . . Interview with Jennifer Chase Does writing energize or exhaust you? How or why? Both. I'm very energized as I'm creating the idea, storyline, and what obstacles I'm going to put in front of my characters. It's an exciting time for me—I love what I do. For the most part, I stay energized, but when I write very stressful scenes it does exhaust me. I've found that if I write in time blocks it helps with exhaustion and keeps my mind focused and fresh. What makes Last Girls Alive special or unique to you? Can you give us a little story behind the story? LAST GIRLS ALIVE has been a special project for me for quite some time now. It had been a series on the back burner that I had wanted to do, but didn't have time in my current schedule. When I had the opportunity to pitch the storyline/series to Bookouture, I was absolutely thrilled. And I was even more thrilled when they signed me for this series. I've always been interested in K9 training and have been involved myself with my own dogs. This story and series incorporates that knowledge along with criminology. I love writing these books in the series. Tell us a little something about your newest release. Detective Katie Scott is an ex-military K9 handler, who has only recently returned home and is still settling back into regular life. She brought home with her K9 partner, Cisco, and unfortunately the aftermath of PTSD. Now, Katie heads the Cold Case Unit for the Pine Valley Sheriff's Department. She sets to work digging into the tragic history of the owners who lost so many children of their own and tracking down the last six residents and the staff who cared for them – but no one wants to talk, let alone remember. What story are you working on next, and what inspired it? Currently, I'm working on the next book in the Detective Katie Scott Series which revolves around military women in California being murdered. I'm also working on several novellas for another series, Emily Stone Thrillers. I love writing police procedurals, action, and mystery. I find so many things inspire my stories from news headlines and just being out in the world. How did publishing your first book change your process of writing? When I wrote my first book, Compulsion , I wasn't as experienced in the entire process of writing and marketing. I floundered a bit. For me to be productive, I found that my process is more structured making sure that I have plenty of time for re-writes and research. I do outline, but it's more of a roadmap than an in-depth outline. It helps to keep me on track and on time. "Brilliant! Brilliant! A: It was most definitely a shock. I never expected the previous owner, my boss and mentor, to leave the vineyard and business to me in her will. Of course there was a catch. And that came as an even bigger shock – I’d have to share the winery with none other than my ex. It was all part of Myrna’s bigger plan. She knew I’d never gotten over her nephew when he left for bigger pastures years ago. Her last act was to bring us back together. She always was a wise woman. Q: What’s your favorite part of co-owning and running a successful winery? A: All of it! I love tending to the vines, watching the grapes grow, interacting with customers. And the wine tastings! An added bonus is I get to do it all with the man I love. Zayn: Q: What made you leave town and the winery behind all those years ago? What made you come back? A: I left because it was the best thing I could do for Izzy at the time. I still believe that. My mistake was to stay away. But it worked out in the end. My stubborn aunt who refused to give up on me made sure I returned. Q: How do you handle it when there’s a difference of opinion between you and Izzy about how to run the winery? A: I defer to the expert, that would be Izzy. She knows her stuff when it comes to wine making, she was even up for a prestigious vintner’s award recently. I’m sure she’ll win many awards in the years to come. I’m proud to have her as a business partner. Even prouder that I’ll get to call her my wife. Both: Q: What’s next for Zayn and Izzy? What comes after the last page? A: We can’t be happier to have found each other again. So we’ve decided to pay it forward. Izzy’s first assistant at the winery has a crush on one of our most loyal customers but is too shy to do anything about it. We’ve decided to give her a little push. More to come.
