A READER'S OPINION SPLENDOR is irresistible! SPLENDOR by talented author Shehanne Moore was the perfect read for me right when I needed it! I had so much fun reading this story because it featured a heroine who has to disguise herself as a man. I simply cannot resist a Regency historical romance when the main character has to cross-dress to win her point. SPLENDOR tells the story of Splendor Malachi who out of necessity, has to win a chess tournament to pay her family's debts. Since only men are allowed to play this game, she is determined to win . . . but she must be dressed as a man. Can she really fool the other players? It's at this tournament where she meets her opponent, Kendall, a famous rake. The moment they meet, a strange feeling is in the air, one neither of them can resist! Why is Kendall attracted to this young man? There's plenty of fun and some scenes had me giggle! This is a story of lies, secrets, sex, love, and misunderstandings. The heroine is bold and determined, which makes this story interesting to follow. Splendor and Kendall's journey together will be filled with plenty of surprises and romance. SPLENDOR is the second story in Ms. Moore's London Jewel Thieves series, and I will definitely watch for her third story! A READER'S OPINION Emma Pivato is a Canadian author who writes "cozy mysteries" a popular mystery genre that shuns graphic violence, sex, and profanity. It is quite popular amongst young adult readers and mature ones alike. MURDER ON HIGHWAY 2 is book number 5 in the Claire Burke Mystery series and while one need not have read the previous titles in the series, it certainly helps in familiarizing oneself with the various characters in Claire's ever-widening circle of friends and family. In book #5, Hilda Boaz' husband Gary and her mother Marion are killed in a motor vehicle accident on Highway 2 (the setting is Edmonton, Alberta). Devastated, Hilda turns to alcohol, takes time off work, disconnects her phone, and puts a Do Not Disturb sign on her door. She simply cannot cope with the double loss in her life. While the Edmonton Police believe the deaths were the result of an accident, Claire, ever interested in getting all the facts and looking for opportunities to solve a mystery, thinks otherwise when it was discovered by forensics that the driver of the van that hit them was wearing a crash helmet! This motivates Claire to get her team together to follow leads that the police have not investigated yet, such as a biker's clubhouse, pulling encrypted files off a PC and so on. The team meets regularly to hash out issues and discuss findings so that everyone is on the same page. A lot of tea and cookies are consumed. Some of the story involves some suspension of reality on the reader's behalf, but MURDER ON HIGHWAY 2 is a good story, and it is not centered around any one character in particular. In fact, Claire does not really make an appearance until well into the storyline. Ms. Pivato does not go too deeply into social issues like depression, coping with the loss of a loved one and living with disabilities, but she is a compassionate writer who writes in an easy to read, conversational and sometimes informative way. Some potential roadblocks to the story are solved in an all-too-easy manner (like getting passwords to encrypted files a little too easily) and there are too many exclamation points in the dialogues for my liking, but if you are a fan of cozy mysteries, you are sure to like MURDER ON HIGHWAY 2, if not the entire Claire Burke Mystery series. Slowly some important clues emerge thanks to another new group member, Matthew, the 16 year-old, computer-savvy grandson of Tia’s neighbor, Amanda. These clues lead to some tense adventures on a cruise, and dangerous interactions with members of two motorcycle clubs. But still the group seems no closer to finding Marion’s and Gary’s killer and Inspector McCoy and Sergeant Crombie are also stymied. Then Tia’s baby is born and while visiting her at the hospital Claire comes across the first glimmerings of an answer. A READER'S OPINION Captivating cowboy contemporary romance set in Montana! THE COWBOY AND THE DOCTOR by Eve Gaddy was truly a fun and entertaining read for me. I absolutely love Dylan and Samantha, and I loved watching their friendship evolve to love and passion! A good, fast-paced western romance with a touch of suspense that kept my interest until the very end. It's captivating with an action-packed ending that ties everything up nicely. Ms. Gaddy is a new author for me, and I will surely watch her next book about the Gallagher family. It is the story of Dylan who has three brothers: Jack, Sean, Wyatt, all doctors, except Dylan and his sister, Glenna. All his brothers are happily married, but his sister went missing in Argentina. Her disappearance has Dylan so worried that he asked a private eye for his help in locating Glenna. Dylan is the only one not married, and he resists until he meets the beautiful doctor in his hometown. Samantha Striker is a trauma surgeon, and when Dylan brings his badly bruised friend to the hospital, he meets her and his heart was captured. There's beautiful chemistry between Dylan and Sam! Both have strong feelings for each other, and it's so hot that sparks flare all over to ignite a rich passion. Some scenes are sensual, even steamy, and very well written with tenderness. Who can resist a sexy cool cowboy? Meanwhile, danger is lurking around Samantha. Dylan will protect her and will do anything to catch the person who wants to hurt her. This is a story of two beautiful souls who were hurt in the past and who are afraid of being hurt again by love, but will receive a second chance. If you love horses and dogs, you’ll love this country romance! In the author's next book, we might learn what happened to Glenna. Readers who love country romances will love this book, and I am pleased to be able to highly recommend it. This is the first book I've read by this author, but it certainly won't be the last. A READER'S OPINION An appealing Civil-War era romantic adventure! NO GREATER GLORY is the first book in Cindy Nord's Cutteridge Family series. It's filled with vivid historic details of battles and life during the time period. This story follows Emaline McDaniels, a widow who is trying desperately to hold onto her plantation in memory of her late husband. Then enters her life Yankee Colonel Reece Cutteridge, who is ordered to take Shapinsay, the plantation, for military use. He didn't expect to come face to face with a determined woman who is willing to do whatever it takes to hold onto what she holds dear. During the course of the war, Emaline finds herself helping the Colonel, even though she holds no regard for Yankees in general. Of course, working closely with Reece makes it difficult to resist her growing attraction. She also begins to see that there are two sides of the war, and she's not the only one who has suffered. Separated by years of war, and uncertain if or when they'll see each other again, the bond between Emaline and Reece remain strong. Their passion and romance is beautiful, though a little rushed perhaps. Reece was a charming and wonderful character, and definitely my favorite. Dramatic depictions of the time and setting, along with interesting characters and rich history, made NO GREATER GLORY an enjoyable book to read. A READER'S OPINION Intriguing country romance with a touch of suspense! If you like western country stories with a dash of intrigue then MOON SHINE, written by Sylvie Grayson, will be perfect for you. I really enjoyed this book! It’s well written with charming characters like Julia Butler, her two children, Maggie and Jims, Dr. Will Stofford, and two mysterious personages called Ben and Ollie. MOON SHINE tells the story of Julia, a young widow with two young children living on a farm in rural Canada in the 1930’s. It's set during the Depression when men had to wander long hours on the roads to find jobs to help their families. These times were rough, especially for women with children and for young widows. Still, Julia manages well under the circumstances. However, two surprised visitors are discovered hiding on her farm. Are they dangerous? Who are they? Danger lurks around her farm, but are Julia and her family in danger? Then the new town doctor enters into her life. Will has been betrayed by women and is not in search of another woman is his life, but will he be able to resist Julia’s charm? I found this story different because of the timeline, although it's very believable! I liked Julia because she was a strong, smart and determined young woman. So many twists and turns during their new relationship that will end on a happily-ever-after note! A READER'S OPINION While many North Americans are familiar with the term "Gold Rush of 1849", they likely have a romantic idea of picturesque covered wagons slowly heading west over the prairie, of bearded miners panning for gold (as the cover depicts), and so on. The reality is quite different, as "Forty-Niner: THE EXTRAORDINARY GOLD RUSH ODYSSEY OF JOSEPH GOLDSBOROUGH BRUFF" by Ken Lizzio informs us. Drawing on the detailed journal and sketches by J.G.Bruff, we learn that the trail west was littered not only with broken dreams but abandoned excess goods, broken wagons, livestock, and graves as well. There were hostile natives to contend with (their land and hunting grounds were being invaded by a steady stream of thousands of whites), disease, adverse weather, and the formidable Rockies themselves. "Captain" Bruff of the Washington City Company recorded it all, and his meticulously kept journal (despite all odds) remains one of the best accounts of the events of 1849 and its sad aftermath. I read this book with great enthusiasm, as I was learning about a portion of North American history I was heretofore unfamiliar with. I was startled to learn of the hardships endured by thousands in their quest for riches. Today we have extravagant lotteries that promise the hope of riches and a superior lifestyle. In 1849, it was the "Great California Lottery" (as it has been referred to) that promised the same if one could only get there fast enough. Myriads of people from all walks of life, professional and layman alike, sold everything they had in their blind quest for a better life. Why, one only had to pick the stuff up in riverbeds, streams, and beaches in California, no hard labor required, it was said. The reality was that few made any money. Mr. Lizzio has composed his account thoroughly refining Mr. Bruff's notes to create a seamless story that follows Bruff from the east coast where he is made Captain of the Washington City Company, to the west where he manages to safely deliver his men with only one loss of life. While sparingly quoting from Bruff's journal, we travel along with the gold-fevered group through every terrain imaginable between Maryland and California. While there is some repetition in his narrative, it is otherwise clean and flowing, sweeping us along on the journey and suffering along with a stranded, starving Bruff through the terrible winter of '49 in the Sierra mountains. Great reading for armchair adventurers and for those who enjoy historical accounts that are authentic and well recounted, without any fabricated dialogue or a superabundance of speculation on the author's behalf. INTERVIEW WITH Molly Bilinski When did you first know you wanted to be a writer? Sometime in middle school, I think. I’ve always loved books, but it was right around eighth grade when I wanted to give novel writing a serious attempt. That story was the most progress I’d made on one that I’d started, and it topped out at fifty pages. I did much better at the beginning of high school – that had a much better plot, better characters, and it was the first time I really thought I can do this. Where did you get the idea for LADY OF SHERWOOD? Robin Hood is one of my all-time favorite legends, and I wanted to do a different retelling. I wanted something fun and adventurous, and I wanted to make Robin Hood a leading lady. I think having Robin and most of the outlaws be woman makes for a very different dynamic, and I’m excited to see what people think of it. How long did it take you to write the book? It took almost a year in total, but if you take out the three or four months that are my busy season at work where I get very little writing done, then it’s only like six or eight months. I was working nights when I wrote it, and I was able to get some writing in between running tests and waiting for samples in the wee hours of the morning. How many hours a day do you write? It depends on the day. There are days when I don’t get any writing done at all, and there are days when I crank out 5,000+ words. I aim to write a little bit every day, at least, but it sometimes doesn’t always work out that way, unfortunately. LADY OF SHERWOOD is a retelling – how did you pick names for your characters? For many of them, I had an idea from the original legends. For example, Robin stayed Robin, and Little John became Jemma. There are a few others that have name twists like that, and some completely new characters that were named based on lists of popular names from the 14th century. And, for me, the name has to fit the character and the character’s personality, and I hope that comes through. What was the hardest scene to write? There were a couple that were really difficult to write, and I don’t want to say which ones because I don’t want to spoil anybody who hasn’t read it yet. I like this question because I retired seven years ago from a twenty-five-year career as an administrative assistant in the financial world. Talk about exhausting work! However, after all these years, I’m still energized every day because I get to do what I love. Housework sometimes suffers, cooking suffers even more because I get lost in my writing. However, my husband is the most patient man in the world. He loves seeing me happy. Writing has changed my retirement life completely. Can you give us a little story behind the story? I chose the title because of the experience I had when I met my husband. Divorced and raising two boys, I had a hard time trusting anyone. It was easier to stay single and retain control of my life than to put my trust in anyone again. Ten years passed and then…that one moment happened for me. I loved the chemistry between Kit and Tyler in this story! Every time I put them on the page together they’d talk and argue and tease each other. Their voices were so clear in my mind. It was actually a bit hard to manage, because they had such a life of their own. What gave you the most trouble with this story? The ending! I had two possible endings and each one required some sacrifices on the characters’ parts. I couldn’t figure out who should give up what. I still question whether I made the right choice. I’d always dreamed of writing a book, but I had no confidence that I could write.One evening I was telling someone about my stressful career and he asked me what I really wanted to do with my life.Well this person was a musician who I have enormous admiration for.I was embarrassed to admit to someone so creative and successful that I wanted to write.But I finally mumbled something about wanting to write a book and he said, “So write a book! That book I started took me almost a decade to write because I was so busy with my career and my life, and I had no idea what I was doing! A READER'S OPINION Warring clans, an unwanted marriage, and an unexpected romance! With a touch of humor and a little adventure, there's a lot to enjoy in HOW TO LOSE A HIGHLANDER. Sorcha Campbell is forced to marry Malcolm MacGregor, a member of a feuding clan. They want nothing to do with each other, but by the king's order they marry. Of course, they're going to have to work for their happily-ever-after. Their bickering and attempts to outdo each other and try to rid themselves of their unwanted marriage are entertaining. As time passes, they each come to understand that maybe the other person isn't as bad as they first thought. Each has admirable traits, but can they forgive past wrongs and misconceptions? Can they see beyond their prejudices? Sorcha wasn't my favorite character on her own, but when bickering with Malcolm, she was fun. The romance was sweet, tender, and wasn't as graphic as I expected, which was nice. The story is well written, and the reader will find reasons to laugh and love in HOW TO LOSE A HIGHLANDER. A READER'S OPINION THE UNQUIET GRAVE is a haunting and well-written novel steeped in history. What a surprise when I started to read the book and realized it's not what I expected, and just as good as I had hoped. I love discovering new-to-me authors! Sharyn McCrumb has blended history, folklore, and a touch of mystery into THE UNQUIET GRAVE. This book is about The Greenbrier Ghost, a case and true account I had never heard about before. At first I thought it was going to be a simple ghost story, but the author went far and above this. From 1930 and 1897 in West Virginia, the author guides the reader through a fascinating and horrifying mystery of murder and how it took the murdered woman's ghost and an unrelenting mother, to see justice was done. Emotions are powerful and the characters are complex—you either love them or hate them with gusto! The book synopsis perfectly describes what a reader can expect from the story, so I won't repeat any of that. This is one of those books that you just need to read to appreciate. What really grabbed me was the historical detail. I ended up reading into the actual case and history because the author piqued my interest so much. If you enjoy good Southern fiction, then you should give THE UNQUIET GRAVE a try.
