- A Reader's Opinion: NO GREATER GLORY by Cindy Nord
A READER'S OPINION An appealing Civil-War era romantic adventure! NO GREATER GLORY is the first book in Cindy Nord's Cutteridge Family series. It's filled with vivid historic details of battles and life during the time period. This story follows Emaline McDaniels, a widow who is trying desperately to hold onto her plantation in memory of her late husband. Then enters her life Yankee Colonel Reece Cutteridge, who is ordered to take Shapinsay, the plantation, for military use. He didn't expect to come face to face with a determined woman who is willing to do whatever it takes to hold onto what she holds dear. During the course of the war, Emaline finds herself helping the Colonel, even though she holds no regard for Yankees in general. Of course, working closely with Reece makes it difficult to resist her growing attraction. She also begins to see that there are two sides of the war, and she's not the only one who has suffered. Separated by years of war, and uncertain if or when they'll see each other again, the bond between Emaline and Reece remain strong. Their passion and romance is beautiful, though a little rushed perhaps. Reece was a charming and wonderful character, and definitely my favorite. Dramatic depictions of the time and setting, along with interesting characters and rich history, made NO GREATER GLORY an enjoyable book to read. - A Reader's Opinion: MOON SHINE by Sylvie Grayson
A READER'S OPINION Intriguing country romance with a touch of suspense! If you like western country stories with a dash of intrigue then MOON SHINE, written by Sylvie Grayson, will be perfect for you. I really enjoyed this book! It’s well written with charming characters like Julia Butler, her two children, Maggie and Jims, Dr. Will Stofford, and two mysterious personages called Ben and Ollie. MOON SHINE tells the story of Julia, a young widow with two young children living on a farm in rural Canada in the 1930’s. It's set during the Depression when men had to wander long hours on the roads to find jobs to help their families. These times were rough, especially for women with children and for young widows. Still, Julia manages well under the circumstances. However, two surprised visitors are discovered hiding on her farm. Are they dangerous? Who are they? Danger lurks around her farm, but are Julia and her family in danger? Then the new town doctor enters into her life. Will has been betrayed by women and is not in search of another woman is his life, but will he be able to resist Julia’s charm? I found this story different because of the timeline, although it's very believable! I liked Julia because she was a strong, smart and determined young woman. So many twists and turns during their new relationship that will end on a happily-ever-after note! - A Reader's Opinion: FORTY-NINER by Ken Lizzio
A READER'S OPINION While many North Americans are familiar with the term "Gold Rush of 1849", they likely have a romantic idea of picturesque covered wagons slowly heading west over the prairie, of bearded miners panning for gold (as the cover depicts), and so on. The reality is quite different, as "Forty-Niner: THE EXTRAORDINARY GOLD RUSH ODYSSEY OF JOSEPH GOLDSBOROUGH BRUFF" by Ken Lizzio informs us. Drawing on the detailed journal and sketches by J.G.Bruff, we learn that the trail west was littered not only with broken dreams but abandoned excess goods, broken wagons, livestock, and graves as well. There were hostile natives to contend with (their land and hunting grounds were being invaded by a steady stream of thousands of whites), disease, adverse weather, and the formidable Rockies themselves. "Captain" Bruff of the Washington City Company recorded it all, and his meticulously kept journal (despite all odds) remains one of the best accounts of the events of 1849 and its sad aftermath. I read this book with great enthusiasm, as I was learning about a portion of North American history I was heretofore unfamiliar with. I was startled to learn of the hardships endured by thousands in their quest for riches. Today we have extravagant lotteries that promise the hope of riches and a superior lifestyle. In 1849, it was the "Great California Lottery" (as it has been referred to) that promised the same if one could only get there fast enough. Myriads of people from all walks of life, professional and layman alike, sold everything they had in their blind quest for a better life. Why, one only had to pick the stuff up in riverbeds, streams, and beaches in California, no hard labor required, it was said. The reality was that few made any money. Mr. Lizzio has composed his account thoroughly refining Mr. Bruff's notes to create a seamless story that follows Bruff from the east coast where he is made Captain of the Washington City Company, to the west where he manages to safely deliver his men with only one loss of life. While sparingly quoting from Bruff's journal, we travel along with the gold-fevered group through every terrain imaginable between Maryland and California. While there is some repetition in his narrative, it is otherwise clean and flowing, sweeping us along on the journey and suffering along with a stranded, starving Bruff through the terrible winter of '49 in the Sierra mountains. Great reading for armchair adventurers and for those who enjoy historical accounts that are authentic and well recounted, without any fabricated dialogue or a superabundance of speculation on the author's behalf. While the seminal California Gold Rush of 1849 produced numerous firsthand diaries and accounts, Joseph Goldsborough Bruff’s―widely regarded as the best and most accurate―provides the basis of this narrative reimagining of a quintessential American legend. Ken Lizzio traces the pioneer’s thrilling adventure from the first rumors of gold, through his crossing of the frontier, all the way to his incredible survival and escape to a prosperous life back east. This is the first book to create a narrative of Bruff’s journey from his meticulously written and preserved diary. And with more than fifty of Bruff’s original pencil sketches and paintings, Forty-Niner provides a new, immersive vision of one of America’s most fabled eras. - Excerpt & Interview: LADY OF SHERWOOD by Molly Bilinski
"I LOVE this version which has enough of the original lore to satisfy my Robin Hood loving, but with a female cast of characters that literally jump off the page and drag you on the adventure!" —Goodreads Reviewer Lady of Sherwood Robin of Lockesly was neither the son her father wanted, nor the daughter her mother expected. When she refuses an arranged marriage to a harsh and cruel knight, the deadly events that follow change her destiny forever. After a night of tragedy, Robin and the few remaining survivors flee to Nottingham. With a newfound anonymity, they start to live different lives. There, she and her band make mischief, robbing from the rich and giving to the poor. But charity isn’t the only thing she wants–she wants revenge. As the sheriff draws his net closer, Robin’s choices begin to haunt her. She’ll have to choose between what’s lawful and what her conscience believes is right–all while staying one step ahead of the hangman. Lady of Sherwood is a unique young adult retelling of the beloved Robin Hood legend. Filled with action and romance, this new series follows a teenage heroine through her fantastic, yet dangerous adventures. Much, with a look of intense concentration on her round face, gripped a stick and let Jemma reposition her feet and hands as necessary. “Steady your weight,” Jemma said quietly. “You want to have a strong base, but you need to be able to move quickly.” “If I bring this down, you almost want to rise to meet it instead of letting it push you back,” Robin added. “Stay ahead of it, then.” Much braced, and Robin brought the staff down slowly enough for Much to anticipate the movement and react accordingly. “Balance.” Jemma adjusted her elbow. “The last thing you want is to be knocked on your arse because then you’ve got to dodge the attack and get back on your feet, which is tricky.” Much smiled wryly. “Is that why Robin shoots them from a distance?” She giggled. “Probably, but have you seen her when she’s got to use her bow like a staff?” “It’s a good, solid yew bow.” Robin put a little more pressure against Much’s stick to see what would happen, and grinned brightly when the younger girl stayed strong and balanced. She even pushed back a bit, and Robin’s grin sharpened. Robin leaned away, slid the staff down her palms to a different grip, and drew back in preparation to jab for somewhere in Much’s midriff. “Now, if you’re very quick and confident, then you can swing down and knock it aside.” Jemma guided Much’s hands and arms into the movement, and used the stick to deflect Robin’s attack. It happened slowly, so Much could ease into it. “That’s going to hurt if you get hit with it,” Robin said, snapping her arms back as though she were going to try stabbing forward again. “It’s going to crack or break your ribs if it connects, and there’s no shame in jumping out of the way.” Jemma put her hands on Much’s waist and helped her swerve her hips to the side and out of the line of fire from the staff in Robin’s hands. “Swerve first, and then try to knock it out of the way. If you can somehow knock it out of her hands, that’s great, but usually you won’t get someone to part with their weapon.” “Especially men,” Robin added. “That’s who you’ll be against, most likely.” Much froze. Robin lowered her staff and rested one end of it on the toe of her boot like she frequently did with her bow. She rubbed the side of her nose and softly said, “It’s…it’s ugly. There’s nothing dignified about it because someone is actively trying to hurt you and your focus is on making sure they can’t.” She lowered the stick. “And you want to hurt them back.” “Only to give yourself enough time and space to get away,” Jemma added gently. “If it comes down to it, whether it’s them or you, we’d always rather have you.” “It’s a difficult choice to make, Much.” Robin reached out and wrapped her fingers around Much’s wrist. “We’d rather none of you lot – you, Kitty, and Maggie – have to make it.” The implication sunk in a bit, and Much took a deep breath only to blow it out again. “Right.” She readjusted her grip on the stick and raised it once more. “Again?” "Absolutely,” Jemma said. “Remember what I told you about your elbows.” Robin smiled sharply and tightened her fingers around the staff. INTERVIEW WITH Molly Bilinski When did you first know you wanted to be a writer? Sometime in middle school, I think. I’ve always loved books, but it was right around eighth grade when I wanted to give novel writing a serious attempt. That story was the most progress I’d made on one that I’d started, and it topped out at fifty pages. I did much better at the beginning of high school – that had a much better plot, better characters, and it was the first time I really thought I can do this. Where did you get the idea for LADY OF SHERWOOD? Robin Hood is one of my all-time favorite legends, and I wanted to do a different retelling. I wanted something fun and adventurous, and I wanted to make Robin Hood a leading lady. I think having Robin and most of the outlaws be woman makes for a very different dynamic, and I’m excited to see what people think of it. How long did it take you to write the book? It took almost a year in total, but if you take out the three or four months that are my busy season at work where I get very little writing done, then it’s only like six or eight months. I was working nights when I wrote it, and I was able to get some writing in between running tests and waiting for samples in the wee hours of the morning. How many hours a day do you write? It depends on the day. There are days when I don’t get any writing done at all, and there are days when I crank out 5,000+ words. I aim to write a little bit every day, at least, but it sometimes doesn’t always work out that way, unfortunately. LADY OF SHERWOOD is a retelling – how did you pick names for your characters? For many of them, I had an idea from the original legends. For example, Robin stayed Robin, and Little John became Jemma. There are a few others that have name twists like that, and some completely new characters that were named based on lists of popular names from the 14th century. And, for me, the name has to fit the character and the character’s personality, and I hope that comes through. What was the hardest scene to write? There were a couple that were really difficult to write, and I don’t want to say which ones because I don’t want to spoil anybody who hasn’t read it yet. I hope readers enjoy this new take on an old story. THE AUTHOR Molly is a 2013 graduate of William Smith College with a bachelors in chemistry. She puts her science powers to use by day and is a novelist by night (and weekend...and any five minutes she can find). Kory’s heart, trampled and bruised, is unprepared to ever love again, until his unexpected reaction to Ricki reveals some things are worth taking a chance on. When evil finds its way back into Ricki's world, their fragile bond is tested, forcing them to face their greatest fear: can a wounded heart ever trust anew? Betrayal. Desire. Revenge. Which one prevails? AMAZON | BARNES & NOBLE | KOBO Add to Goodreads Romance - Contemporary | Content Rating: 2 Hearts | May 1, 2017 | 239pp Praise for THAT ONE MOMENT "Patty Wiseman’s portrayal of beautiful, independent Ricki whose life is almost destroyed by Russ Desmond, a sociopath seeking revenge, keeps you turning the pages. Ricki tries to wipe Kory Littleton from her mind, but can she control her heart and withstand his charm and the security he offers? Wiseman adroitly weaves a romantic tale full of suspense that finds Ricki high on a mountain trail fighting for survival. But the reader wonders, what is worse: Ricki’s struggle to survive the elements or her struggle to escape Desmond’s maniacal plan. Wiseman’s story reveals to the reader how easy it is for a self-reliant woman to fall prey to the vulnerabilities of the heart. I recommend this fast-paced page turner." —Linda Pirtle, author of The Games We Play Series: The Mah Jongg Murders and Deadly Dominoes . Q&A with Patty Wiseman Does writing energize or exhaust you? I like this question because I retired seven years ago from a twenty-five-year career as an administrative assistant in the financial world. Talk about exhausting work! However, after all these years, I’m still energized every day because I get to do what I love. Housework sometimes suffers, cooking suffers even more because I get lost in my writing. However, my husband is the most patient man in the world. He loves seeing me happy. Writing has changed my retirement life completely. I’m traveling, meeting new people, rubbing elbows with fellow writers, making speeches, and simply having a ball. What makes THAT ONE MOMENT special or unique to you? Can you give us a little story behind the story? I chose the title because of the experience I had when I met my husband. Divorced and raising two boys, I had a hard time trusting anyone. It was easier to stay single and retain control of my life than to put my trust in anyone again. Ten years passed and then…that one moment happened for me. The instant I met him, something changed inside of me. It took him three times to propose before I would agree to marry, but he was persistent. We’ve been married twenty-four years, now. The best decision I ever made—because of that one moment. I consider myself a strong woman and all my books are about strong women, but in this one, I wanted to show how vulnerable even a tough lady can be when it comes to matters of the heart. The heroine is a Game Warden. She carries a gun. But, in one area she can never get it right. Men. This book shows the process of one woman who strives to get it right. What can you tell us about THAT ONE MOMENT? Ricki Sheridan goes through the worst betrayal a woman can experience. She catches her boyfriend of two years with her best friend. A double betrayal! This isn’t the first time she’s gone through this, but she is determined it will be the last. She takes a leave of absence from her job as a Game Warden in the Dallas, Texas area and heads for the Rocky Mountains to throw herself into a survivalist training camp at Wolf Den’s Lodge. Her intention is to eradicate the emotional pain by concentrating on the physical pain. An unexpected accident finds her in the hands of the handsome trail boss, Kory Littleton, high on the mountain range with night falling fast. She resists his kindness, tries to push him away, unaware of his own painful divorce. Stranded on the mountain ridge alone, Kory coaxes her to talk about what brought her to the mountains and, in a moment of weakness, they share a kiss. That kiss shakes her resolve. She resists the weakness of her heart, however, and closes the door on Kory Littleton. Evil comes to the mountain, unexpectedly, and throws Kory and Ricki into a battle for their lives. Will their bond grow stronger or will evil tear them apart? Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want? I admit I don’t always follow the rules. I study, I go to classes, I examine what experts say and try to take it to heart. My fans love my books. For that reason, I think I am on the right track with my stories and give my readers what they want. But! I do try to be original. I don’t follow template writing. The unexpected is what I want when I read a book. I don’t want to figure out how it ends in the first chapter. Challenge me. Keep me turning the pages. That’s what I want in a good book and I hope that is what I deliver in mine. I write a vintage 1920’s series, also. My die-hard followers clamor for more because they are original and intriguing. I hope I’ve done that with That One Moment, as well. "Claire McEwen is a wonderfully imaginative author who writes highly emotional reads dealing with serious issues. I highly recommend her books, especially for people who love imagery and a high emotional factor." — Goodreads Reviewer HIS LAST RODEO Back in the saddle again… Tyler Ellis catches Kit Hayes completely off guard when he swaggers back home and into the bar she manages. She accepts his offer of a hefty bonus and helps him transform the place because she's desperate to escape their tiny town in the Sierras. She doesn't expect him to work this hard beside her. Where's the cocky cowboy he's supposed to be? Instead she discovers he's still the sweet, genuine young man she once knew. And so much more…including a threat to the adventurous life she craves. I loved the chemistry between Kit and Tyler in this story! Every time I put them on the page together they’d talk and argue and tease each other. Their voices were so clear in my mind. It was actually a bit hard to manage, because they had such a life of their own. What gave you the most trouble with this story? The ending! I had two possible endings and each one required some sacrifices on the characters’ parts. I couldn’t figure out who should give up what. I still question whether I made the right choice. If you read it, please let me know what you think! How long have you been writing, and what (or who) inspired you to start? I’d always dreamed of writing a book, but I had no confidence that I could write. One evening I was telling someone about my stressful career and he asked me what I really wanted to do with my life.Well this person was a musician who I have enormous admiration for.I was embarrassed to admit to someone so creative and successful that I wanted to write. But I finally mumbled something about wanting to write a book and he said, “So write a book! Life’s short. What are you waiting for?”And it made me realize that there was no way to know whether I could do it or not until I tried. And that life was short… I’d better get busy.So I started writing. That book I started took me almost a decade to write because I was so busy with my career and my life, and I had no idea what I was doing! But I finally finished it and Harlequin liked it.It’s called A Ranch to Keep and it was published by Superromance in 2014. What do you do when you are not writing? I have a little boy, so I try to spend as much time as possible with him. I know pretty soon he’s going to grow up and not want to hang out with his mom so much! And I love spending time with my husband as well. We hike and bike and enjoy the ocean near our home. I also love to garden, though I’m not great at actually making plants grow, and there are way too many gophers in my yard! What are some books that you enjoyed recently? I just read my first book by Tracy Brogan and it was a lot of fun! I was smiling all the way through. I love reading books by my fellow Superromance authors and many Harlequin Western and Harlequin Heartwarming authors as well. I also read a book a few weeks ago that really surprised me. It’s a new adult book, which isn’t always my favorite genre, but it was Rita nominated so I thought I’d check it out. It’s called Tell Me How This Ends, by Victoria De la O, and it really pulled me in! She did an amazing job with the hero… well, both heroes! Is there anything that you would like to say to your readers and fans? I always feel really weird about the word fans, but to my readers, Thank you!!! Some of you have stuck with me through every book, even when you didn’t like a particular story as much as you liked others. Your faith in me is humbling and you give me courage to keep going. But I’ve got a few nerves.” “You should. You have no idea what you’re doing.” Her intoxicating combination of sass and mischief had the glass slipping out of his hand, so he had to hustle to catch it. “Nice reflexes,” she murmured. “Maybe there’s hope for you yet.” “If you help me out tonight, there is. I can pour a pint—” “Barely.” “—and measure out a shot. But if I get anything more complicated than that, I’m toast.” “You don’t know your cocktails?” “Don’t drink ’em myself. I’ve been reading recipes, but I’m more of a hands-on learner.” A nice way of saying that half the words he read made no sense. He glanced hopefully in her direction. “I just need a good teacher.” “You want me to train you? You won’t be embarrassed?” “When you rodeo, you learn by falling on your ass in front of hundreds of people. This can’t be more humiliating than that.” She studied him from underneath her thick black lashes. “What’s in it for me?” “A boss who’s not totally incompetent?” Her slow smile could melt metal. “But that could be kind of fun to watch.” “No shit-show is fun to watch for long. Plus I saw you with those customers. You pretend to be all tough, but you have a soft spot for the lost and lonely. I’m part of that club right now.” “You?” She laughed, soft and bitter. He’d give a lot to know what put that resentment in her soul. “Not the words I’d ever use to describe someone like you.” “Someone like me will pay you a training stipend. A hundred extra bucks each night.” “Now you’re trying to buy my help?” She scrubbed the pint glass in her hand with extra vigor. “Not everything can be bought, you know. Loyalty, for example.” “I’m not asking for your loyalty, though that would be nice,” Tyler said. “I’m trying to treat you like a professional. You have years of experience. I have none and I need to learn. So I pay you extra to share your expertise with me. It’s only right.” “Fine,” she said quietly. “I’ll do it. But you have to be willing to move fast and do what I say.” “I’m yours to command,” he said, liking the flush creeping up her cheeks at the tiny innuendo. “And I appreciate the help.” She grabbed a stack of dry glasses. “Well, let’s get going then. It’s getting loud out there, which means it’s getting busy.” They rounded the corner and Tyler was amazed to see a crowd that stretched almost to the door. A quick scan revealed a collection of some of the most rugged-looking folks he’d ever seen in one place. Bikers in leather, ranch hands in hats, jeans and bowlegs. Women in tight T-shirts and big hair. Kit glanced over her shoulder. “Welcome to the Dusty Saddle. Hope you’re ready to earn your spurs.” THE AUTHOR Claire McEwen lives by the ocean in Northern California with her family and a scruffy, mischievous terrier. - A Reader's Opinion: HOW TO LOSE A HIGHLANDER by Michelle McLean
A READER'S OPINION Warring clans, an unwanted marriage, and an unexpected romance! With a touch of humor and a little adventure, there's a lot to enjoy in HOW TO LOSE A HIGHLANDER. Sorcha Campbell is forced to marry Malcolm MacGregor, a member of a feuding clan. They want nothing to do with each other, but by the king's order they marry. Of course, they're going to have to work for their happily-ever-after. Their bickering and attempts to outdo each other and try to rid themselves of their unwanted marriage are entertaining. As time passes, they each come to understand that maybe the other person isn't as bad as they first thought. Each has admirable traits, but can they forgive past wrongs and misconceptions? Can they see beyond their prejudices? Sorcha wasn't my favorite character on her own, but when bickering with Malcolm, she was fun. The romance was sweet, tender, and wasn't as graphic as I expected, which was nice. The story is well written, and the reader will find reasons to laugh and love in HOW TO LOSE A HIGHLANDER. - A Reader's Opinion: THE UNQUIET GRAVE by Sharyn McCrumb
A READER'S OPINION THE UNQUIET GRAVE is a haunting and well-written novel steeped in history. What a surprise when I started to read the book and realized it's not what I expected, and just as good as I had hoped. I love discovering new-to-me authors! Sharyn McCrumb has blended history, folklore, and a touch of mystery into THE UNQUIET GRAVE. This book is about The Greenbrier Ghost, a case and true account I had never heard about before. At first I thought it was going to be a simple ghost story, but the author went far and above this. From 1930 and 1897 in West Virginia, the author guides the reader through a fascinating and horrifying mystery of murder and how it took the murdered woman's ghost and an unrelenting mother, to see justice was done. Emotions are powerful and the characters are complex—you either love them or hate them with gusto! The book synopsis perfectly describes what a reader can expect from the story, so I won't repeat any of that. This is one of those books that you just need to read to appreciate. What really grabbed me was the historical detail. I ended up reading into the actual case and history because the author piqued my interest so much. If you enjoy good Southern fiction, then you should give THE UNQUIET GRAVE a try. Lakin, West Virginia, 1930 Following a suicide attempt and consigned to a segregated insane asylum, attorney James P. D. Gardner finds himself under the care of Dr. James Boozer. Fresh out of medical school, Dr. Boozer is eager to try the new talking cure for insanity, and encourages his elderly patient to reminisce about his experiences as the first black attorney to practice law in nineteenth-century West Virginia. Gardner's most memorable case was the one in which he helped to defend a white man on trial for the murder of his young bride—a case that the prosecution based on the testimony of a ghost. Greenbrier, West Virginia, 1897 Beautiful, willful Zona Heaster has always lived in the mountains of West Virginia. Despite her mother’s misgivings, Zona marries Erasmus Trout Shue, the handsome blacksmith who has recently come to Greenbrier County. After weeks of silence from the newlyweds, riders come to the Heasters’ place to tell them that Zona has died from a fall, attributed to a recent illness. Mary Jane is determined to get justice for her daughter. A month after the funeral, she informs the county prosecutor that Zona’s ghost appeared to her, saying that she had been murdered. An autopsy, ordered by the reluctant prosecutor, confirms her claim. The Greenbrier Ghost is renowned in American folklore, but Sharyn McCrumb is the first author to look beneath the legend to unearth the facts. Using a century of genealogical material and other historical documents, McCrumb reveals new information about the story and brings to life the personalities in the trial: the prosecutor, a former Confederate cavalryman; the defense attorney, a pro-Union bridgeburner, who nevertheless had owned slaves; and the mother of the murdered woman, who doggedly sticks to her ghost story—all seen through the eyes of a young black lawyer on the cusp of a new century, with his own tragedies yet to come. With its unique blend of masterful research and mesmerizing folklore, illuminating the story’s fascinating and complex characters, The Unquiet Grave confirms Sharyn McCrumb’s place among the finest Southern writers at work today. - A Reader's Opinion: SADIE'S HIGHLANDER by Maeve Greyson
A READER'S OPINION If you love time travel romance with a touch of magic and enchantment, then I recommend SADIE’S HIGHLANDER by Maeve Greyson! If you are in the mood for a fun read with a happy ending, then this Scottish love story will leave you charmed. Ms. Greyson nicely blended her two charming characters, Alec MacDara and Sadie Williams, into a well-developed and very well-written intrigue. I have to say that this author is one of those Highlander romance writers who knows how to really spin an adventure and capture your interest from start to finish. I’m already hooked to her new Highlander Protector series. I simply can’t resist stories with magic, time travel, and romance, all blended into a beautiful love story. Centuries ago, the goddesses were the sole protectors of a precious stone called the Hearstone. These goddesses planned the MacDara family’s future by making them the protectors of the precious and blessed stone, an ancient relic filled with unexplainable energy that made every mortal life worth living. As time passed, the knowledge of this gift slowly faded, until one day in Scotland, Alec MacDara, his father, mother, his three brothers, and younger sister, time traveled from 10th-century Scotland to the 21st-century North Carolina. The goddesses gave the four brothers divine powers to protect the stone: Alec, a sword, Ross a shield, Grant, a hammer, and finally to Ramsay, a spear. In this first adventure,we meet Alec, a brave warrior with a heart of gold, and Sadie, a modern day headstrong woman. All her life, Sadie's family, especially her sister Delia, had treated her like someone beneath them. Now Sadie lacks confidence in herself, but as a future screenwriter, she’ll need all the help she can get if she wants to succeed. I really loved the chemistry between these Alec and Sadie. Spending so much time together will bring those two beautiful souls so close that Alec, the charming highlander, will become irresistible for Sadie. What will happen next? Well, that’s when the all the fun began! Ms. Greyson is one of my favorite writer of Highlander adventures, so Alec and Sadie’s story was so much fun to read. It was fast paced and romantic with some scenes filled with Ms. Greyson’s unique sense of humor! I can’t wait to read her second book, Joanna’s Highlander . Which highlander will it be next time . . . Ross, Grant, or Ramsay? Amazing debut for the new Highland Protector series! Highland warrior Alec MacDara and his brothers traveled forward in time to protect the sacred Heartstone. Their cover? Owners and operators of a theme park called Highland Life and Legends. As the chairman, Alec has been fending off requests to film at the breathtaking property. It’s only because of the charming correspondence from an enterprising production assistant that he agrees to a meeting at all. That’s when Alec meets a woman whose lush curves make him forget, for the first time, all about tenth-century Scotland. A lowly assistant for her sister’s motion picture company, wannabe screenwriter Sadie Williams is shocked when Alec agrees to let them film at the park upon one condition: that she report to him daily. Sadie’s sister always told her that their parents only adopted her because they felt sorry for the ugly little stray. But Alec looks at Sadie like she’s the most tempting creature in the world. And with his gleaming, musclebound body stripped down to nothing but a hip-hugging kilt and boots, Alec clearly knows a little something about temptation. - A Reader's Opinion: PEACE IN THE VALLEY by Ruth Logan Herne
A READER'S OPINION Sweet, wholesome, and utterly charming! PEACE IN THE VALLEY by Ruth Logan Herne is the third book in the author's Double S Ranch series. In this book, we meet the younger Stafford brother, Trey, and Lucy Carlton. Trey returns home from Nashville to help his ailing father, and perhaps discover why a guy who seems to have everything has been left with a deep yearning and sense of great loss. Neighbor to the Double S Ranch, Lucy has struggled as a single mother to keep her young family in the basic necessities. She carries a deep grudge, but she's also strong and has an exceptionally good heart and worth ethic. Trey and Lucy are a perfect pairing. Let me just say that if there were more men on this earth like Trey Walker Stafford, chivalry would be alive, well, and probably running rampant. His charm and sincerity will make a girl's heart skip a few beats, and he only gets better as the story moves along. Lucy is admirable, and though wounded and afraid, she doesn't give up . . . on anything. PEACE IN THE VALLEY by Ruth Logan Herne is not my typical read, but this author manages to write Christian romance without being preachy. This is one of those feel-good stories that leaves the reader with a desire to be a better person. The sweet romance is a fine thread woven throughout the book, which shows how a beautiful love story can still be clean and well-written. The characters are real people with real problems, sorrows, and dreams, and Ruth Logan Herne brought them all to life in a beautiful setting with a hopeful and inspiring message. This third installment can easily be read as a stand-alone novel, but I'd recommend starting with book one so you don't miss out. - A Reader's Opinion: TO HAVE AND TO HOLD by Charlene Raddon
A READER'S OPINION An enjoyable western romance worthy of the genre! TO HAVE AND TO HOLD tells the story of Tempest Whitney, a single mother struggling in debt on the Utah frontier in 1888. She's left with her thieving husband's debts and a ruthless rancher who wants her homestead . . . and Tempest. Enters Buck Maddux, a stranger who was given half of Tempest's ranch and sworn to look after her. Tempest is a strong heroine who desperately wants to be out from under the control of dishonorable men. She's not sure what to make of Buck when he arrives, and it doesn't take either of them too long to figure out that they need each other, even if they'd rather part ways.
