Q&A with Victor Acquista What makes Serpent Rising special or unique to you? Can you give us a little story behind the story? For me, incorporating social messaging is an important element in creating fictional stories and characters. I want to expose some aspect of the human condition and have readers engage in thought provoking ways while still enjoying an entertaining story with memorable characters. Humanity has difficulty distinguishing truth from falsehood; this leaves people vulnerable to propaganda and other mind control techniques. I wondered about why this reality characterizes the human condition. Although fake news and media spin are very much in the news lately, I realized that the battle between truth and falsehood has been present throughout human history. This led to my conceptualization of the great War of the Two Serpents. In this fictionalized battle, the forces attempting to control information and keep the masses of humanity in the dark have largely been victorious against the opposing factions that want information to be freely available. In a sense, this is also a battle between light and dark. I wanted the main character to be a champion for truth, and I wanted a female character to further characterize this War of the Two Serpents as also a battle between opposing masculine and feminine aspects of humanity. Readers familiar with suppression of the divine feminine will understand why I wanted a woman as my champion for truth. Mythology and esoteric teachings are areas of personal interest. Blending these with the social theme I wanted to explore, and the protagonist I envisioned, all provided the ingredients for a rich and detailed narrative. Tell as a little about what makes your main characters tick. Serena Mendez is a deeply flawed protagonist. She experienced a traumatic event in her childhood that led to PTSD. This event was actually a botched initiation into an order of Luminarians. When readers are first introduced to her, Serena’s childhood trauma acts as the backdrop for her dysfunction and accounts for some of her snarkiness. But it’s her excuse to run away from her destiny. In truth, she has genes tracing back to the Candelaria sect of truth warriors and Luminarians. They carry the flame of truth to dispel darkness and battle against the venomous lies of the enemy. This explains the series title, The Saga of Venom and Flame. But Serena is unaware of her role in this War of the Two Serpents. Until she recognizes and embraces her destiny, she will remain dysfunctional. Serena’s journey is one of discovery and transformation to eventually become a fully realized Candelaria. Although she is a reluctant heroine, she finds the courage to venture into the unknown on a quest to complete her training. All the time she is supported and encouraged by her friend, Bryson Reynolds. He is a genius with a photographic memory as well as a geeky hacker and expert in cyber security. Bryson has an interesting backstory including the mysterious death of his parents and their apparent involvement with the Illuminati. He is trying to understand how his father and his uncle are wrapped up in an apparent conspiracy and how Bryson’s story intersects with Serena’s. What type of hero do you like best? I’m partial to flawed heroes and heroines and I want them to have interesting backstories that account for the character flaws. I think perfect characters who have no flaws or weaknesses are boring. I find a character arc that includes confronting and/or overcoming their flaws to be appealing. Superman is boring even with his weakness to kryptonite. His bigger “weakness” is the conflict that is wrapped into his feelings towards Lois Lane. On top of this, he works to conceal his identity. He also has a soft spot for protecting innocent people. These character traits and how he wrestles with them are what make him interesting. I can’t talk about heroes without talking about villains. I like villains who have characteristics that people can relate to and the villains also need good backstories to explain why they are the way they are. The villains must also be reasonably matched or even somehow superior to the hero. Superman vs. ordinary bank robbers is not interesting, but battling criminal mastermind Lex Luther he is matched against a worthy opponent. In addition to a flawed hero that is interesting. The hero/heroine needs to be relatable. I want to be able to relate to the challenges and trials they are faced with. I want to route for their success but also feel their pain along the way. Are there particular themes or motifs wrestle with or address in your book? As mentioned previously, the main theme has to do with truth/falsehood and our collective vulnerability to mind control and manipulation. A secondary theme embedded into the novel relates to realizing one’s full potential in spite of being damaged. Yes, Serena Mendez is a flawed heroine, but she is capable of extraordinary accomplishments. In life, we are all the heroes and heroines of our own stories, our own personal narratives. How can we each maximize our full potential? This is something I want readers to ponder as they join Serena on her Circle training and quest. Perhaps readers will feel inspired by Serena as they travel with her on a journey of self-discovery. I believe in extended human capacities and want to encourage readers to be all that they are. My mother used to remind her seven children that, “A man’s reach must be further than his grasp.” I would like readers to believe their reach is much, much further than they realize. In Serpent Rising I introduce concepts related to DNA, chakra openings, kundalini, and esoteric teachings. It’s my hope that some readers will explore these concepts further, especially with respect to uncovering their full potential. Finally, I hope readers will be motivated to be truth seekers and Lightbringers in their own lives. What else have you written? I write cross-genre in both nonfiction and fiction. I’ve written two self-help books themed around health, wellness, and wellbeing: Pathways to Health—An Integral Guidebook and Health Wise–Integral Lessons in Transformation . These relate to my background as a primary care internist and my deep interest in Integral theory. Both books are easy reads and incorporate many holistic principles and practices. They both contain spiritual elements as I believe at our core we are spiritual beings. To exclude spirituality from discussions about health and wellbeing seems to me to be a serious oversight. I’ve authored a science fiction novel Sentient . This novel is about two highly advanced telepathic species with very different social structures. One is highly competitive and uses telepathy to gain individual advantage, the other is structured as a collective consciousness. When they collide, it results in near total genocide of one race. Their struggle to survive and how this relates to humanity’s evolution are all important story elements. The second novel in The Saga of Venom and Flame, titled Revelation , is set for release in 2021. This is the continuation of Serpent Rising and follows the efforts of Serena and Bryson to prevent the Illuminati from establishing a New World Order. I have five published short stories, three are in anthologies and two are stand alone. Finally, I recently completed the manuscript for a satire. Interview with Anna Belfrage What makes His Castilian Hawk special or unique to you? The first time I knew I was going to write a book set in the late 13th century was when I first read about the death of Llywellyn the Last (Prince of Wales) in 1282. Poor man: recently widowed, distraught by his loss, and his hot-headed brother somehow manages to embroil Llywellyn in a fight with England that there’s no chance in hell he can win. I wasn’t sure how I was going to write it until the day Robert FitzStephan popped into my head with all his baggage and his fair mistress Edith—who turned out to be anything but fair by the time the story was done! Anyway: Robert has served King Edward of England loyally since he was twelve and is therefore rewarded with a landed wife. Eleanor (Noor) d’Outremer—Robert’s “reward”—is young and very alone in the world. She also has Welsh kin, and is not quite as impressed by King Edward as Robert is. In fact, Noor will do whatever it takes to save one innocent Welsh child from the king’s wrath. his puts Robert in a difficult position: to whom does he owe his ultimate loyalty? To the king he has served so faithfully since he was a boy or to the dark-eyes young girl who is growing into an admirable woman? Things ar further complicated by Edith who will do whatever it takes to rid herself of Noor—even more so when she realizes Robert has fallen in love with his wife. What type of hero do you like best? Physically, I find myself always writing heroes who are pretty big—tall, broad-shouldered and the like. I think this is because I rather like the idea of being able to (vicariously, obviously as my characters never materialize in the flesh) snuggle into the warm chest of my male characters and feel completely protected. I like heroes who are dependable, men of convictions and ideals. I like it if they’re a bit too set in their beliefs initially so that my female protagonists can work their magic and broaden their horizons. All my heroes are honourable. They would die defending those they love. They may be products of their time, but they never belittle their women, even if at times they are overprotective. While their lives require that they be tough, my heroes are brave enough to expose their more vulnerable sides to the woman they’ve given their heart to. Do you believe in the concept of a muse? What is yours like? Ha! Do I believe in a muse? Oh, yes, I most certainly do. Ms Inspiration is a lady who has a preference for dramatic clothing, lots of leather and the occasional whip which she slaps against her boot when she feels I am slacking. She presents me with a constant stream of potential stories and gets very irritated when I don’t immediately start tapping away like crazy. “But I’ve already given you a male protagonist,” she’ll grumble. “Look, he’s perfect!” (This is when she bats her eyes at the as yet unknown male protagonist) “Yeah, but I’m not sure I want to write a story about…” “Fiddlesticks! Of course you do!” “Err…” I study the shadowy male outline. Seriously, 16th century? No, not for me. “Now, you listen to me,” (slap, slap goes the whip) “Not everyone has a muse like me! So stop arguing and start writing!” She gestures at the man. “And just look at those legs, absolutely gorgeous in hose!” I won that discussion. Well, sort off. That shadowy male is the protagonist of my romantic suspense series, but without the puff hose. Instead, Jason meets the world in jeans or bespoke suits. “Thank God for that,” he mutters. Do you work to an outline or plot or do you prefer just see where an idea takes you? Usually, one scene kicks off a new WIP. Once I have that scene down, I will sit back and draw up an outline, but I have learned the hard way that nothing ever happens according to the outline. It helps me set the initial chapters, but once the story takes off, that outline is history. In my present WIP, I was SO sure I had found my antagonist in a terrible scene in which my male protagonist is maimed. Three chapters later, the intended antagonist has become a victim, so there went that outline. I still think the outline helps as it offers some initial structure, but I have to own the fact that I am more of a “pantser” than a “plotter”. ( Ms Inspiration snorts—loudly. “No discipline,” she mutters. I’d disagree. “Pantsers” are just as disciplined as “plotters”—it’s just that the creative process works differently) What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book? The toughest challenge was getting Robert’s character arc right. He doesn’t exactly endear himself to his new wife or the reader (or the writer!) initially. There are reasons for his behaviour, starting with the fact that the concept of having a wife is totally unfamiliar to him. Robert never expected to marry well as he is no catch himself. Bastard-born, all he knows how to do is fight on behalf of his king, and suddenly here he is, married to a much younger woman who comes with manors and lands. Still, this does not excuse how he humiliates poor Noor. But Robert is basically a good man and I had to give him the opportunity to vindicate himself . Along the way, Robert discovers love—for the first time in his life. *sighs happily* I think I managed to make Robert credible and relatable—ultimately, though, that’s up to the readers to decide! The Author Had Anna been allowed to choose, she’d have become a time-traveller. As this was impossible, she became a financial professional with two absorbing interests: history and writing. Anna has authored the acclaimed time travelling series The Graham Saga, set in 17th century Scotland and Maryland, as well as the equally acclaimed medieval series The King’s Greatest Enemy which is set in 14th century England. More recently, Anna has published The Wanderer , a fast-paced contemporary romantic suspense trilogy with paranormal and time-slip ingredients. An Interview with Ashley York What inspired you to write this book? I really enjoy hearing from my readers all the time, and this one particular reader is the reason Lachlann's story came to be. These three Highlanders first appear in The Gentle Knight , book 2 of the Norman Conquest Series. Lachlann is particular is an important part since he's the one who aids the hero (Peter) in his quest to bring the heroine (Brighit) safely to the Prior where she'll be taking her vows as a nun. What can we expect from you in the future? Lachlann's Legacy is about three friends, Lachlann, Aldred, and Niall’s, who have accepted a mission for the church to find silver that had been hidden hundreds of years earlier. It had been hidden to protect it from the raiding "Vikings" but ends up never being returned. Clues are found in this story that propel us to the next story about Aldred. One reviewer mentioned that it's going to be a hard story to write. I think because he's a difficult character to like. I will remind you, however, that Sean who first appears as a rival to Peter in The Gentle Knight ends up a great overking and ends up with his own series, The Warrior Kings . There are few characters that cannot be redeemed by the right circumstances...although I may have finally created one in Lachlann's Legacy who hails from the Orkney Islands. You'll have to let me know if you agree after you read it :) Do you have any “side stories” about the characters? In a way this question sort of overlaps with another question, What did you edit out of this book? Side stories are often background about the characters that the author knows but they won't necessarily make it into the book. I have a lot of side stories and cutting them out is sometimes the hardest part! I'm getting better at it though...I think. And my amazing editor, Cindy Vallar, shows no mercy which keeps the pace moving along and makes the story that much better. Besides, certain side stories may still come to light in another book. What is your favorite part of this book and why? I think the favorite part(s) of this book are the interaction between my hero, Lachlann, and the heroine's nephew, Finn. He's a precocious little boy who has very strong opinions about everything especially Lachlann. They build a close friendship that comes easy to both of them which is the opposite of how it goes for Ethne. Children can be more open and just be themselves whereas adults sometimes have roles they need to keep up that make it more difficult to trust people. Trust is definitely an important part of the whole story. How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book? Lachlann, Niall, and Aldred were characters first introduced in The Gentle Knight where they were much younger and carefree. Niall's story about his father being banished from the clan and falling on hard times came to light in The Irish Warrior . He was willing to marry his daughter, Thomasina, off to pay his debts. I thought this was a pretty compelling story and wanted to explore it more. Niall must eventually be accepted back into the clan but at what price? With this "trilogy" I can explore that more. I also needed a storyline that could carry through all three stories so I could concentrate on each of their HEA's but have this one journey be the thing that connects them all. be such a big challenge that it would last over the three books I'd envisioned for my "three Highlanders" and this was the perfect journey Who designed your book covers? My beautiful cover was designed by Wicked Smart Designs and what a pleasure it was to work with them. Nothing was a hassle. Everything went smoothly. She was a true professional. I like a man who can look after himself as well as a lady but who also respects her independence and her own strength of character. What do you think about when you are alone in your car? I only took it because the salary will give us a good start to our marriage.” “Very noble and worthwhile in the end. You’ll see.” Julia patted her knee below the table. The word noble fit her fiancé much better than it did any of her actions. Logan was a hero, investing all of his savings in freeing his mother from debt during his stay on the farm in Silver Grove. He never discussed finances in his letters, but he didn’t need to. Karen knew enough about the sacrifices he’d made to believe that his return to Oswell City meant starting over, building his stability a little at a time until finally positioned to support a wife. Not only was he noble and heroic, but he was handsome too. Q&A with Allison Pearl Does writing energize or exhaust you? It does both. And somehow it does it at the same time. There are times during a first draft, when everything is so new, that I’ll sit down and start typing and the next time I look up hours have passed. I feel like I could write forever and what’s more is that I want to. I want to push through until I can write ‘The End.’ But on the second through fifteenth drafts—not an exaggeration—it feels like I’m constantly running up hill. My body is tired. My brain is telling me to stop. I need a break. But I know that when I reach the top, I’ll be in love again and ready to do it all over. How does your faith inform your writing? I don’t know that it informs my writing, it’s more like it’s woven into the fabric of it. It’s through my faith that I see and navigate the world. I couldn’t separate it from my books even if I wanted to. And I don’t. I want to write as well as read stories of characters that share my faith facing interesting, difficult, or seemingly impossible challenges. I want people to discover God, question God, and just be real. Because we can’t love God until we can be honest with Him. Books & Benches: Beautifully put, Allison! If you were to genre-hop, which genres would you most like to try writing? I think I would go full sci-fi/fantasy. My book shelf proportions largely favor those genres. I seem to always have a Stephen King on my nightstand or whatever new fantasy novel is out at a given time. I love the near infinite directions those authors can take a story. There’s always something new or haunting that sticks with you long after you turn the last page. Do you prefer writing in silence or to music? I cannot write in silence. If I tried, I’d probably bite my nails to the cuticles while staring at a blank screen. That being said, I can’t listen to music with lyrics as I work either. The words distract me and I just end up doing karaoke at my desk. Movie soundtracks or classical is where I end up. If you’re a writer thinking about going that route though, beware. The wrong Hans Zimmer track might take your story somewhere you don’t want it to go. Books & Benches: Karaoke would definitely be distracting! :) Do you believe in the concept of a muse? Not for myself. I think inspiration is a choice. You have to be on watch for it. Actively looking for it. When I think of a muse, it takes the responsibility off of me and the motivation away. Instead of brainstorming or exploring, should I sit and wait for some magic muse before I can type or write a word? No. If you want to write a story, grab a pen and paper or a laptop and start writing. Find the story. Don’t wait for it to come to you. Books & Benches: Thank you for a lovely interview, Allison.
