- Whispers Under a Southern Sky by Joanne Rock - Contemporary Romance Review
If you love contemporary romances with emotional depth and a strong sense of place, this one’s for you. Book Review of Whispers Under a Southern Sky Delightful and refreshing! Whispers Under a Southern Sky is a charming contemporary romance of forgiveness, trust, hope and second chances. I haven't read Joanne Rock's previous stories in her Heartache series, but I didn't have any trouble following her characters, Amy and Sam. Whispers Under a Southern Sky tells the story of Amy, who, after an absence of ten years, returns to her hometown of Heartache to support her sister, Heather, in a judicial case. Except going back there means she'll remember secrets from her past that she would rather forget, but she needs to move on. Enters back into her life, Sam, the town sheriff, who will probably upset her even more. Is the flame still burning between these two? Will she forgive him? Will she trust him again? Their relationship is complicated because they are complex characters. Can they get a second chance and start fresh, a new, solid relationship that could end on a happy note! I really enjoyed this sweet and romantic tale! It's well-written, with a tight plot that held my attention from the first page to the very end. - Heartsong Cottage by Emily March - Sweet Contemporary Romance Review
When the world feels too loud, this is the kind of book I reach for. Heartsong Cottage by Emily March is like a gentle breeze in a tumultuous world—quiet, comforting, and restorative. Book Review of Heartsong Cottage Heartsong Cottage is like a gentle breeze in a tumultuous world. I picked this book up because it made me think of Christmas, though I didn't get a Christmas vibe while reading. This is the first book I've read by Emily March, and it won't be the last! I really like her writing style, character development, and description of the settings. I felt as though I was there in the Colorado Rockies. I liked Shannon O'Toole all the way through. She's resilient, hard-working, and blends well with the other characters. I liked Daniel Garrett—a lot—up until one point in the story because of something he said. I find some actions easier to forgive than words. After that, I kind of liked him, but I lost all respect for him as a character, so that was a letdown, but I still enjoyed the romance. The secondary characters are absolutely delightful, and I imagine the entire series would be worth reading. The author did a great job creating the community and the surrounding area. A big bonus is that the book is clean while still offering a sweet, believable romance that culminates in a satisfying ending. - Mrs. Drew Plays Her Hand by Carla Kelly - Regency Romance Review
Looking for a Regency romance that delivers on every level? Mrs. Drew Plays Her Hand by Carla Kelly is charming, clever, and quietly wonderful. Book Review of Mrs. Drew Plays Her Hand Mrs. Drew played every hand exceptionally well, and so did author Carla Kelly. I lay in bed reading this book and actually caught myself smiling many times. I couldn't remember the last time I had so thoroughly enjoyed a book. Roxanna Drew is an absolutely delightful and endearing heroine. Her strength, resilience, and love for her daughters are beautiful. The relationship she has with her children is so wonderfully written , and each of them has a very distinctive personality, yet at the same time , you can clearly tell they are related. Our lovely Fletcher, or Lord Winn , as he's known for most of the book, is charming, straightforward , and fun! Yes, he is so much fun. Despite his moments of seriousness and stubbornness, he's wonderfully fun, and the relationship between him and Roxanna is not only sweet, but they truly enjoy each other. I laughed with them many times. The love is not instant between them, but rather a friendship that grows into an affectionate bond between two people who respect and care for one another. The love story is indeed lovely and develops at a very nearly perfect pace. It's also a wonderfully clean historical romance! The setting is just as it should be. The descriptions of the dower house and manor are clear, but not too detailed as to distract from the story. The trek to Scotland--excellent! You'll have to read it to know what I'm talking about. This is one of the best Regency romances I have ever read, and I don't say that lightly. My only disappointment is that it had to end. Mrs. Drew, Lord Winn, and Carla Kelly get five stars and then some. Last To Fall — At a Glance Genre: Romantic Suspense Series: Gossamer Falls, Book 3 Favorite Elements: Slow-burn chemistry, strong family dynamics, steady suspense Themes: Trust, family, faith, healing, courage under pressure Overall Take: A gripping, emotional read and my favorite in the series Book Review of Never Fall Again by Lynn H. Blackburn Last to Fall by Lynn H. Blackburn delivers everything I was hoping for. After enjoying book one, I’ve been eagerly waiting for Mo’s story, and it did not disappoint. The chemistry between Mo and Bronwyn is amazing, filled with raw emotion that comes through even in their quiet moments. The suspense grabs hold from the very first page, and the characters—especially Mo and Bronwyn—are richly developed. I also loved the strong family dynamic, which adds warmth and depth to the story. Faith is woven naturally throughout the narrative. It never feels overwhelming and instead complements the storyline beautifully. This is one of those books that makes you lose track of time—I stayed up late to finish it. While I enjoyed the other two books, Last to Fall is easily my favorite in the series and one I know I’ll revisit. - The Whitechapel Widow by Emily Organ - Historical Mystery Review
In the gritty streets of Victoria-era London, The Whitechapel Widow draws readers in with a blend of suspense and rich character development. This story follows Emma Langley, a young woman whose life is upended when her husband mysteriously disappears. For fans of historical mystery, this book is an engrossing mix of intrigue, and emotion featuring interesting women sleuths of strength and courage. Book Review of The Whitechapel Widow by Emily Organ From the immersive experience the author creates with her depictions of 1888 London to a mystery that leaves the reader guessing enough to keep turning the pages, the author does a great job drawing the reader in from the first page. Penny Green, a character from another of the author's series, makes an appearance, and as a first-time reader of Emily Organ, and not having read the other series, I did not feel lost with the introduction of Penny into the story. Their camaraderie shows the strength of women navigating a male-dominated world, bravely challenging societal norms. It's not all about Jack the Ripper in Whitechapel. The Whitechapel Widow is a well-written story that blends historical context and imagery with an absorbing mystery. A promising start to the Emma Langley Victorian Mystery series. I will most certainly be reading more from this author. About the Book The Whitechapel Widow by Emily Organ (retailer description) London hunts the Ripper. A widow hunts her husband's killer. - Smoke on the Wind by Kelli Estes — A Dual-Time Scottish Novel Review
Kelli Estes's novel, Smoke on the Wind, takes readers on a journey that intertwines dual timelines with the deep emotional bonds of family. The story revolves around two mothers, Keaka Denney and Sorcha Chisholm, navigating the complexities of loss and identity across different timelines. Book Review for Smoke on the Wind by Kelli Estes As the story weaves between the present and the past, readers experience Scotland's beautiful landscape while being thrust into the emotional journeys of both women, though I especially enjoyed and was drawn into Sorcha's timeline and story. Although, I also wish I was on the walking trip with Keaka in her timeline (sounds the an amazing experience). Sorcha's storyline immerses readers in historical Scotland, depicting landscapes, traditions, and societal norms that resonate even today. Estes describes the beauty of the Scottish Highlands with stunning detail and evokes the struggles women faced during that period, worsened by the unimaginable struggles of losing everything and having to find the strength to start over again. While some transitions between the two timelines were a little more difficult to follow (may have been more me than the writing), this format allows readers to draw connections between the two women. The mild violence content is appropriate within the historical context. The author's writing style truly immerses the reader into the story with great pacing, fascinating research, well-timed tension, and heart-wrenching emotion. And I love the cover! It's what drew me in before the description. About the Book Smoke on the Wind by Kelli Estes (Retailer Description) Struggling with the tragic end of her marriage, Keaka Denney is on a bittersweet adventure in Scotland with her son, Colin. She’s joining him on a weeklong hike along the West Highland Way before he enters university in Glasgow. After Sorcha Chisholm and her son are wrenched from their home in a brutal eviction, they face an arduous trek toward a new beginning. When Sorcha learns she’s wanted for a murder she didn’t commit, she and her son run for their lives. Then help arrives from the strangest woman in the most unexpected ways. - The Witch of Painted Sorrows by M.J. Rose – Historical Paranormal Fiction Review
Drawn in by its hint of the paranormal, The Witch of Painted Sorrows gradually reveals itself as a richly atmospheric and emotionally complex story. With vivid historical detail, mystery, and a touch of romance, M.J. Rose creates a haunting novel that lingers. At-a-Glance Tone: Dark, atmospheric, and melancholic with touches of romance Setting: Paris, early 20th century Genre: Historical fiction with paranormal elements Themes: Obsession, memory, art, love and loss, the lingering past Best for readers of: Moody, evocative historical fiction; stories with a subtle paranormal thread; richly descriptive, character-focused novels Book Review of The Witch of Painted Sorrows by M.J. Rose This is the first book I've read by M.J. Rose. I was drawn to this book by the setting, the cover, and the hint of paranormal. I honestly didn't know what to make of the writing style at first, but without realizing it, the story pulled me in. Beautifully written with vivid details of time and place, The Witch of Painted Sorrows draws the reader into its pages with mystery, melancholy, and, in the beginning, a touch of romance. I can't say I personally enjoy stories where the main characters are married or otherwise involved; I don't like the dishonesty, but it fits the story. In truth, the grandmother became my favorite character. I liked her color and passion for everything; in real life, she'd be a force to reckon with. M.J. Rose is a remarkable talent, and I plan to try more of her books. At-a-Glance Tone: Heartwarming, tender, and inspirational Setting: Kendrick Creek, Tennessee (small-town, contemporary) Genre: Contemporary romance / inspirational fiction Themes: Second chances, forgiveness, self-discovery, resilience, coming home Best for readers of: Uplifting, character-driven romances; small-town settings; stories about rebuilding life after hardship Book Review for Rebuilding Her Life by Ruth Logan Herne A touching story of coming home, acceptance, and second chances. Ruth Logan Herne has a talent for engaging the reader with true-to-life characters and situations. Not only isn't tragedy not shied away from in Rebuilding Her Life , it is the foundation upon which Jess, Shane, and all the other characters find their inner strength and build anew. Like other books I've enjoyed by this author, I quickly connected with the people and their plights. It is easy to sympathize with their hardships while wondering how I'd react to the same situations. Shane won big bonus points with me for his generosity of forgiveness and tolerance, and for his hopeful outlook of the future. Likewise, Jess is someone relatable whose journey shows us that sometimes the life we always thought we should have isn't always what we necessarily want or need. This is a quick, easy, and enjoyable read that moves along at a nice pace. I found myself transported to the small town of Kendrick Creek in Tennessee and could easily visualize the surroundings, from the thick forests and icy roads to the burned out remains left by the fire. A sweet and tender inspirational romance, Rebuilding Her Life , is certain to please readers who enjoy an uplifting story. Filled with romance, humor, and heart, this historical western romance tale follows Sam and Cheyenne as they navigate love, family bonds, and self-discovery. With engaging dialogue, strong characters, and a touch of suspense, A Cowboy Christmas Legend is a story that leaves readers smiling and satisfied. At-a-Glance Tone: Heartwarming, romantic, and humorous Setting: Texas/rural setting Genre: Historical Western Romance Themes: Love and passion, family bonds, independence, hope, humor Best for readers of: Character-driven Western romances, witty banter, wholesome yet steamy love stories Book Review of A Cowboy Christmas Legend by Linda Broday It was such a pleasure to read this family-loving, romantic, food-for-your-soul book. I found the story and plot to be very caring and refreshing to read, and I was impressed with the amount of entertainment and pure romance in the story. The soul-searching moments that Sam and Cheyenne come to forge for themselves were so enjoyable. All the characters have a strong sense of independence, which I really like. I enjoyed reading about the strong bond and comradeship shared by most of the characters. This book is an easy read and a page-turning experience that was amazing. This is a wonderful book filled with meaningful conversations and wonderful dialogue, and the writer did a great job with capturing the western drawl language and terminology. This helped to make the characters really engaging. I love the dry humor! The witty banter between Cap and Sam is awesome throughout the whole book. Sam and Cheyenne's love and passion were beautiful, and I will never forget their story. The drama and suspense were fantastic. The author wrote the scenes in a way that captivated me all the way through and beyond the moment Aaron appeared at the end of the book. The book reads with so much hopefulness for a peaceful and happy life. This story impressed me with its realism, and even the smallest of things were described in detail. These are all factors that bring out the brilliant writing in this book.
