I am a country girl. I grew up camping and to this day, am an avid tent camper. I also love to fish and cook in dutch ovens. In fact, I actually teach classes on how to cook in them. In case you don’t know, dutch ovens are cast iron pots with three ‘legs’ that you cook in over a campfire like the cowboys used to do. While I have used the coals in a campfire to cook, I typically use charcoal so I can control the heat better. If you can cook it on or in your kitchen stove you can cook it in a dutch oven. I also enjoy golf and photography and some of my older photos have prizes in our local fair. Do you use an outline or plot for your writing? I am what is commonly referred to as a pantser - meaning I write by the seat of my pants, going wherever the story takes me. I have tried to use an outline or plot points but it just doesn’t work for me. I feel like it boxes me in. I get an idea and just start typing and see what happens. I have snippets for probably a dozen different stories in my to-be-written folder. If I hit a snag on my current work in progress, I pull up that folder, open one of the files and see if anything sparks. If it does, I write till it’s gone, if not, I pick another one. Where do you get ideas for stories? An idea can come from a variety of situations. For Mail Order Groom, it came as a result of a conversation with a fellow writer at a workshop. He made the statement that you always hear about mail order brides but never mail order grooms, and wondered why. Immediately, my writers’ brain kicked in, and by the time I got home that evening, I had the basis of the story figured out. I sat down and wrote until midnight. The thing about a writers is that it is we are either writing or thinking about writing pretty much all the time, so something as simple as a brightly colored scarf can (and has) prompted an idea for a story. I absolutely love to write and I always knew that one day I would be a writer. I love that whole creative process that starts with an idea and then progresses with each ‘what-if’ until a final product is done, and then you look at it and say “Wow! I did that!” What do you think about book trailers and do you use them? I love trailers and yes I use them for my books. I think they are a great way to introduce the story to prospective readers. I see them as being like those previews you see at the movie theater about coming attractions and a great way to entice potential readers. I make my own trailers as well as making them for several author friends and have them up on my You Tube channel called Dana Diva’s What is your favorite scene in Mail Order Groom ? There are several but I have to say two of my favorites are when they are discussing getting married – and what Ty expects from it - and when Emma tells Ty she wants him to teach her to kiss. What fun scenes to write! Emma is very smart and capable of handling and huge ranch alone, but when it comes to the man-woman thing as she calls it, she is clueless…but intrigued. The fact that she has no idea of just how beautiful and appealing she is makes her all the more charming. A READER'S OPINION MOUNTAIN MAN by David W. Marshall tells the fascinating and epic story of John Colter, a hunter and scout who joined the Lewis & Clark expedition across the North American continent. Colter remained behind for two more years after the expedition, exploring the great American west through treacherous, and what must have been stunning, territory. I read this book because the American west and frontier has always been of great interest to me. However, this text goes beyond a biography or history book. The author transported me to the early 1800s, where I traversed rocky trails and towering peaks, crossed raging streams, and lived alongside Colter during his travels. The author's insight and authority, due to his obvious in-depth research, engrossed me as I witnessed the interaction with the Indigenous Peoples and his exploits as told from the perspectives of second-hand accounts and the author's impressive research. Historian David W. Marshall is a gifted writer with a talent for weaving history into an adventure story. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys history of the American west, albeit a small part. MOUNTAIN MAN was well worth reading. A READER'S OPINION A dark and haunting mystery, PATH INTO DARKNESS by Lisa Alber is filled with troubled souls. The author paints a picture of a small village in Ireland called Lisfenora. In this town you'll meet a variety of characters, each lost or in pain: Danny Ahern who struggles emotionally and morally while his wife is in a coma, Nathan, a father with disturbing secrets in his past, Zoe, his beautiful daughter who returned home care for her ailing father, and Merrit, the outsider who finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation. The author didn't tiptoe around the darker elements of human emotion. I was pulled in by the way she wrote the story, dropping clues here and there. I did figure out the secret before the end of the book, but that didn't make the sequence of events any less interesting. The quiet and picturesque town of Lisfenora is not all it appears to be. We're introduced to many other characters from the village who each add their own importance to the mystery and to the every-day life in Lisfenora. The author's complex and tightly-woven tale filled was filled with colloquial phrases that added an air of authenticity to the story. The author's first-hand knowledge of County Clare is evident and made the events and people seem all the more real. PATH INTO THE DARKNESS is the third book in Lisa Alber's County Clare Mystery series, but I didn't have any trouble reading it before the first two books. The hero and heroine of A STUDY IN SCOUNDRELS were introduced in the first book of the Romancing the Rules series, RULES FOR A ROGUE. I immediately knew that Sophia Ruthven, who was straight-laced and exceedingly proper, should end up with Jasper Grey, who reveled in being a scoundrel. The challenge was figuring out what each possessed that would appeal to the other. Since I knew Sophia loved detective novels, having them set out to solve a mystery together seemed a perfect way to keep them in each other’s company for a while. What did you enjoy most about writing this book? I enjoyed writing A STUDY IN SCONDRELS because of the opportunity to include a bit of mystery in the storyline. Like my heroine, Sophia, I am a big fan of detective novels. Sherlock Holmes was as popular in the Victorian era as he is today, and I was fascinated to learn that there were several “lady detective” novels published in Britain long before Conan Doyle’s sleuth appeared. Sophia loves mysteries and when faced with one, she can’t resist jumping in to investigate. Name one thing you won’t leave home without. A small purse-sized notepad and a pen. After getting stuck at doctor’s offices and restaurants with nothing to write on when a story ideas strikes, I’ve learned my lesson. In desperation, I’ve written on the backs of receipts, napkins, and envelopes, but nothing compares to having a little notebook in which I can organize my thoughts during all those “waiting” moments that pop up during a week. Name three things on your desk right now. Sticky notes, an unfinished cup of coffee, and way too many pens. I feel like no desk is complete without a big heaping pile of sticky notes. I love their cheery colors and find them a useful tool to capture ideas as they pop into my head. I try to limit myself to one big cup of coffee a day, but many days I get busy and don’t end up drinking most of it until it’s gone cold. And pens? I seem to attract them. I clear off my desk each morning before starting to write, but by evening the surface is covered with pens. I tend to reach for another one every time I need to write something down. What types of scenes are your most favorite to write? I love moments of tension, especially when they involve banter between the hero and heroine. Writing snappy banter is a challenge for me, but I enjoy the struggle because those are the moments that reveal so much about my characters. It’s a chance to build emotion between the hero and heroine, but banter also allows them to begin admiring each other for wit and cleverness, something beyond the initial physical attraction. Are there certain characters you would like to go back to, or is there a theme or idea you’d love to work with? Secondary characters are always hard to let go of. Often harder than my heroes and heroines, since they haven’t had their stories fully explored. I have a dozen secondary characters that I’d love to revisit, but one, Rob Wellesley from my first Avon Impulse novel, ONE SCANDALOUS KISS, persists in my mind. I’ve received several reader letters about him and would love to give him his happy ending someday. Do you have any advice to give to aspiring writers? Persist and never stop learning. I’ve been writing for years, began publishing three years ago, and I still feel as if I’m a newcomer. There is always more to learn, more ways to stretch ourselves as writers. Rejections come with the territory if your goal is to publish, but each rejection is just an opportunity to improve your story and hone your writing skills. A READER'S OPINION Jan Kepler goes missing and is found dead. It's now up to Swatara Creek Police Officer Flora Vastine to find out what happened. SHARES THE DARKNESS by J.R. Lindermuth blends mystery into the lives of the people of Swatara Creek with deep emotion. Each character, minor and major, play an integral part to how the mystery surrounding Jan's death unfolds. Between an illegal timber operation and uncovering clues to Jan's death, Flora Vastine and the police department are barely treading water. The problem is, Flora has a past, and her past is making it difficult for her to remain objective. I was pulled out of the story a few times in sections that need some polish, but the author pulled me back in with the unfolding mystery. I became interested in the characters from the beginning and was kept guessing as new clues emerged. It's clear that J.R. Lindermuth knows how to spin a tale. Multiple plots and a cast of well-developed characters makes SHARES THE DARKNESS an enjoyable read for mystery lovers. A READER'S OPINION I've been in the mood for some feel-good stories recently, and HIS SECOND-CHANCE FAMILY by RaeAnne Thayne delivered everything I expected and then some. Julia Blair and Will Garrett are both wounded souls in need of something wonderful to happen in their lives. Julia and her young family relocate from Boise to the seaside village of Cannon Beach, a place she'd always loved. When she found an apartment for rent in the sprawling Brambleberry House she remembered from her youth, she took it and settled into her new home. Will is bruised from within, but Julia sees beyond that to the young man she once cared about and the man now before her. Except, is Will too damaged from not-to-recent past that he's unable to let anyone new into his life, especially someone from his past. I also appreciate how the author can bring plenty of heat and romance without graphic sex. RaeAnne Thayne has a smooth and easy writing style that make her books perfect for a nice afternoon read. HIS SECOND-CHANCE FAMILY is all about second chances, and beautifully incorporates real-life heartaches and emotions. My heart pounded right alongside Julia's whenever she got near Will. Readers of second-chance and contemporary romance will delight in RaeAnne Thayne's HIS SECOND-CHANCE FAMILY. Note : I read this story as part of BRAMBLEBERRY HOUSE, a two book set (with a different cover) in "The Women of Brambleberry House" series. This is book two, but I had no problem reading it as a stand-alone story. A READER'S OPINION A captivating story of hope and trust with an Irish touch! Cynthia Owens is an excellent storyteller and WISHES OF THE HEART had everything to please me. This author never disappoints and her stories are always well written with strong emotions and rich characters! This book is the seventh story in her Claddagh series, which I have really enjoyed following. The characters are touching and the story line is well developed. Even if this book is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. WISHES OF THE HEART is the story of two broken souls in search of hope, love, and acceptance by others. Their perilous journey will be filled with twists and turns! Tom O'Brien is the second son of Rory O'Brien, and heir apparent to Ballycashel. Well, he's not, really. His brother Sean is the true heir, but because of his rebel attitude, Sean cannot return to Ireland, and Tom finds himself restrained by the past and his father's attitude against planning their estate into the future. A READER'S OPINION THE JACK NEWTON RADIO by Jon Lawrence is the story of Anwyn, a septuagenarian, who after her beloved husband dies, moves out of London back to her birthplace in Wales. There, she finds the old family home dilapidated and in need of repairs, much like her own life. Befriended by Maggie, a nurse at the local clinic, Anwyn comes to see that see needs others as much as she is needed by them. A cozy little story set on the coast of Wales, THE JACK NEWTON RADIO has many elements of an enjoyable read: a quaint village, a rustic old house, a family with a myriad of problems that a gruff but lovable old lady helps them to resolve, the spirit of her deceased husband that is only a radio dial away, and even a dramatic rescue on the water. While there are many British expressions used in the dialogues that may be unfamiliar to the North American reader, the story requires them in order to be authentic. The characters are all quite likeable, aside from the bullies at the school that pick on Maggie’s son Peter, who is quite introverted. Especially endearing is the character of Anwyn who may come across as abrasive, but she soon will crack a joke to lighten the situation, whether at the doctor’s office or in the supermarket. If this story has any shortcomings, I would say that it was, well, too short. The ending came too soon, and I would have liked to have known more about how each character got on as the days went by. As it is the author appears to tie up all the various threads in one neat package. One takeaway from the book that readers will like is the power of words (particularly poetry) to heal the human spirit. The poems of the unknown Jack Newton that Anwyn hears on her old radio come to her aid when she needs them most, something avid readers everywhere can relate to. We all have our favourite books that we turn to time after time for encouragement, for solace, for strength. A READER'S OPINION Brynnde Archambault needs a husband, but no the one she's expected to marry. She's not interested in spending the season in search of someone she feels suitable. She enjoys playing matchmaker for others but when it comes to own love life, she's hasn't found much interest in the process . . . Then she meets Garrick Sommerford, Viscount Burbridge. When scandal strikes, Brynne might find herself marrying the unwanted and dull Dallweather. The author describes the setting and characters in rich detail, and brings in many secondary characters who are as enjoyable as Brynnde and Garrick. Sometimes I felt like the way they spoke was too modern for the time, and parts here and there might have used a little more polish, but overall the story is well-written. This was a delightful historical romance with refreshing characters. The repartee between Brynnde and Garrick is really very enjoyable. BRYNNDE is a sweet Regency romance sure to be enjoyed by fans of the genre.
