  • A Light Beyond the Trenches by Alan Hlad - World War I Fiction Book Review

Heartbreaking yet filled with hope, Alan Hlad’s A Light Beyond the Trenches is a vivid, character-driven journey that will stay with you long after the last page. At-a-Glance Tone:  Heartbreaking, immersive, and hopeful Setting:  World War I (battlefields, training camps, and civilian life) Genre:  Historical fiction/wartime drama Themes:  War and its human cost, friendship and loyalty, resilience, hope in dark times Best for readers of:  Emotional, character-driven historical fiction; stories that blend the realities of war with hope and human connection Book Review for A Light Beyond the Trenches by Alan Hlad Beautifully written, heartbreaking, and not at all what I expected. I'm not usually a fan of world war novels, but the unique take sold me, and I'm glad I gave it a chance. Anna, Max, and Nia (the German Shepherd) are all wonderful and relatable characters who come alive as the story evolves. Each one brings their own dynamic to the story, yet together they seem as a cohesive unit, as though one cannot fully exist in the book without the other. The heartbreaking horrors of war—for soldiers and civilians alive—are vivid and tearful, and yet, I appreciate how the author managed to interject hope throughout. Alan Hlad has created such a realistic telling that one cannot help but be transported to the battlefields, the training fields, and at each character's side as they battle demons, within and without. There is so much to recommend this book, and rather than retell every aspect of it, I will simply recommend it to anyone who appreciates well-written historical fiction. About the Book A Light Beyond the Trenches by Alan Hlad From the USA Today bestselling author of The Long Flight Home , a WWI novel both tender and exciting, as a German Red Cross nurse joins the world's first guide dog training school for the blind and begins a quest to show a Jewish pianist who was blinded on the battlefield that life is worth living. A fascinating, poignant, and life-affirming tale of heroism and resilience in World War I based on the true story of the first school to train guide dogs for the blind… By April 1916, the fervor that accompanied war's outbreak has faded. In its place is a grim reality. Throughout Germany, essentials are rationed. Hope, too, is in short supply. Anna Zeller, whose fiancé, Bruno, is fighting on the western front, works as a nurse at an overcrowded hospital in Oldenburg, trying to comfort men broken in body and spirit. But during a visit from Dr. Stalling, the director of the Red Cross Ambulance Dogs Association, she witnesses a rare spark of optimism: as a German shepherd guides a battle-blinded soldier over a garden path, Dr. Stalling is inspired with an idea—to train dogs as companions for sightless veterans. Anna convinces Dr. Stalling to let her work at his new guide dog training school. Some of the dogs that arrive are themselves veterans of war, including Nia, a German shepherd with trench-damaged paws. Anna brings the ailing Nia home and secretly tends and trains her, convinced she may yet be the perfect guide for the right soldier. In Max Benesch, a Jewish soldier blinded by chlorine gas at the front, Nia finds her person. War has taken Max's sight, his fiancée, and his hopes of being a composer. Yet despite all he's given for his country, the tide of anti-Semitism at home is rising, and Max encounters it first-hand in one of the school's trainers, who is determined to make Max fail. Still, through Anna's prompting, he rediscovers his passion for music. But as Anna discovers more about the conflict's escalating brutality—and Bruno's role in it—she realizes how impossible it will be for any of them to escape the war unscathed... • A Man of Legend by Linda Broday – Historical Western Romance Review

Crockett Legend and Paisley Mahone are back together, but rebuilding trust isn’t easy—especially with murder, arrests, and past heartbreak standing in their way. A Man of Legend  delivers a charming blend of romance, adventure, and humor set against the rugged Texas frontier. At-a-Glance Tone:  Lighthearted yet dramatic, with humor and romantic tension Setting:  Texas, historical period (ranching and frontier life) Genre:  Historical western romance Themes:  Love and second chances, trust and reconciliation, resilience, family and community Best for readers of:  Historical western romances with chemistry, adventure, and a mix of light and serious moments Book Review of A Man of Legend by Linda Broday A Man of Legend is a worthy installment for the Legend legacy of Texas ranchers, lawmen, and rebels. From page one, the reader is met with a taste of the romance, action, and touches of adventure they can expect to carry them through to the end. Crockett Legend (what a cool name) and Paisley Mahone (another cool name) have plenty of chemistry. Unfortunately, they also have a history, and there's the whole matter about arrests, murder, and crushing dreams . . . but don't worry, it's all good. The author did a great job making these two work for their happily-ever-after and managed to do so with just the right amount of drama and action. There is a lot of dreaming going on by multiple characters, but the dreams of Crockett and Paisley are front and center as they work to navigate rebuilding trust, balancing what they each want in life, and finding a way back to each other in person and love. Touches of humor are interspersed to balance out the more serious moments. One thing in common among those living on Lone Star Ranch is the ability to see as much of the positive in life as possible, even when it seems impossible. Lone Star is the kind of place a person wants to visit, if only to meet the wonderful people who live there. This reader recommends A Man of Legend for those who enjoy historical western romances with a combination of light and serious tones, and where the intimate details are not overdone. At-a-Glance Tone:  Sweet, tender, and lyrical with moments of adventure Setting:  Scotland, historical period Genre:  Historical romance Themes:  Love and longing, personal growth, overcoming obstacles, patience and understanding Best for readers of:  Clean, character-driven romances; slow-burn love stories; cozy historical adventures Highlights A sweet love story set in a captivating historical era with elements of loyalty and sacrifice. The complexities of family and community. A satisfying resolution to the love story. Book Review of Journey to Bongary Spring by Nichole Vann In Journey to Bongary Spring , Isobel McEwan is a spirited woman torn between duty and desire, while Kieran Buchanan is a man driven by revenge—yet life has a way of surprising both of them. When Isobel sets off on a risky journey to the healing well at Bongary Spring, Kieran is tasked with bringing her home, and along the way, danger and unexpected moments of connection test their limits. Their romance unfolds slowly and sweetly, with tender chemistry and heartwarming interactions that make their story truly memorable. The novel shines with lyrical writing that vividly brings historical Scotland to life, creating a rich backdrop for this engaging love story. While Isobel and Kieran’s romance is complete, the book ends on a major cliffhanger, hinting at more adventures to come. Clean, easy to read, and full of charm, Journey to Bongary Spring  is perfect for readers seeking a cozy, character-driven historical romance with a touch of adventure. Note: Although Isobel and Keiran's love story is complete, this book ends on a cliffhanger. A big one. Now, I don't mind a good cliffhanger, really, especially since there is another book. I only wish the second book were about the secondary character who most intrigued me in book one. Alas, I must wait for book three (but I will read book two). • Love Practically by Nichole Van - Scottish Historical Romance Review

Vivid descriptions of ancient castles, misty moors, and rugged mountains transport the reader back in time, immersing them in the world of Love Practically by Nichole Van. Can love overcome inner demons? At-a-Glance Tone:  Emotional, tender, and hopeful with moments of struggle and intensity Setting:  Historical Scotland Genre:  Historical romance Themes:  Personal growth, redemption, enduring love, resilience, slow-burning romance Best for readers of:  Character-driven historical romance, stories with strong heroines and flawed heroes, fans of slow-burn love and emotionally rich storytelling Book Review for Love Practically  by Nichole Van Sometimes the hardest love stories are the ones that leave the biggest impact—and Nichole Van’s historical romance set in Scotland delivers just that. In this tender and emotionally charged tale, a flawed hero and a steadfast heroine navigate inner demons, personal growth, and slow-burning passion. With richly drawn characters, immersive historical detail, and a story that balances sorrow with hope, this novel is a heartwarming journey of love that’s well worth the read. The male lead begins as a hero, but when we meet him again, he is far from perfect and battling several inner demons. The female lead is kind and patient throughout, and truly, I thought she deserved sainthood at a few points. Her strength of character and will made her all the more likable. Fox undergoes a transformation throughout the book that is truly inspiring and hard-won. Leah has her battles, which all begin and end with her beloved Captain Fox. The tender moments are all the more precious when they come after the struggles each faces. I found myself rooting for them from the very beginning. The author did a lovely job of bringing the time period to life, and I felt completely immersed in the world she created. Touches of mystery are hinted at, yet to this reader, it is primarily a love story. About the Book Love Practically by Nichole Van (Retailer Description) As a young woman, Leah Penn-Leith fell hopelessly in love with Captain Fox Carnegie—the only irrational mark on her decidedly sensible life. Fox, unfortunately, did not return her regard. Their story should have ended there. After all, Fox left for India. And Leah returned home to Scotland to rear her much younger brothers. But twenty years later, Fox appears on Leah’s doorstep—older, scarred, and world-weary—proposing a marriage of convenience between them. He needs a mother for his young ward, and Leah, with her capable good sense, comes highly recommended. What woman could say No to such a proposal? Not Leah. Fox has always wreaked havoc on her ability to think rationally. After their marriage, Leah confronts the chaotic reality of Fox’s life. His castle, ten miles up a rugged Highland glen, is shambolic. His ward, Madeline, is a precocious handful. Fox’s time in India is shrouded in rumor and mystery. Worst of all, Fox himself is distant and broken, his personality as altered as his scarred body. Throughout it all, Leah is left with two questions: What happens to a woman after her most-cherished fantasy comes true? And can a marriage, begun in practicality, transform into something deeper? Something like . . . love. Get the Book Kindle  • Paperback  • Bookshop • Audible Thank you for reading and visiting Books & Benches. • 'The Fur Trader's Lady' by Gabrielle Meyer - Heartwarming Historical Romance Review

Love and adventure are beautifully depicted in The Fur Trader’s Lady by Gabrielle Meyer.   Set in the stunning North American wilderness, this story takes us far from the comforts of first, an English estate then across the ocean to Montreal, immersing us in a world filled with courage, love, resilience, and the thrill of discovery. The slow-growing romance between Reid and Charlotte begins the moment they cross paths. Among the characters, Reid McCoy stands out as my favorite. His rugged charm and handsome Scotsman allure make him hard to resist. The moments when he protects Charlotte or shares gentle laughter make the heart tingle, leaving readers wishing they could find comfort in his strong embrace. Together, Reid and Charlotte face the inhospitable wilderness, forming a strong bond. Their adventures through forests and rivers are vividly portrayed, pulling readers into the landscape. Historical elements are woven in, allowing readers to not only enjoy Reid and Charlotte's romance but also gain insight into the fur trading era. I did find myself skimming through some of the later travel scenes because there were a few of them, but then something Reid would say or do pulled me back into the story. This is Christian fiction, and several elements and mentions of faith and God are woven in, more so as the story progresses. I felt the Christian elements complemented the story without overpowering. With its charming characters and immersive storytelling, The Fur Trader’s Lady  is bound to secure a special place in the hearts of fans of clean historical romance. About the Book The Fur Trader's Lady by Gabrielle Meyer (Retailer Description) To escape her guardian’s plans to marry her, Lady Charlotte Fairfax steals away to Montreal to locate Reid McCoy, a fur trader who owes her fiancé a debt for saving his life. Even though European women are forbidden from entering the interior, she is desperate to get to her fiancé deep within the northwestern wilderness. Reid McCoy has worked hard for fifteen years to become a shareholder in the North West Company and is on the brink of realizing that goal. Taking Charlotte into the interior will not only put her life at risk, but it could also jeopardize his dreams. Honor bound to repay his debt, his only option is to have Charlotte dress as a man and enter as his assistant clerk. With Charlotte’s guardian close on their trail and a personal rival willing to do anything to keep Reid from becoming a shareholder, they will embark on an epic journey that will test not only their strength and endurance, but their hearts, as well. • 'The Herb Knot' by Jane Loftus - Medieval Historical Fiction Review

With immersive historical detail, complex characters, and a vividly realized setting, The Herb Knot  is a compelling read for fans of character-driven medieval fiction. At a Glance Title:   The Herb Knot Author:  Jane Loftus Genre: Medieval Historical Fiction Setting: 14th-century England Tone: Immersive, bittersweet, with moments of emotional depth Best for:  Readers who enjoy rich historical detail, complex characters, and medieval intrigue Book Review for The Herb Knot by Jane Loftus The Herb Knot  by Jane Loftus is a medieval historical novel set in 14th-century Winchester, following Rafi Dubois, a young Frenchman shaped by the trauma of the Battle of Crécy, and quite a terrifying and heartbreaking incident. Charged with returning a broken family seal to England, Rafi’s quest intertwines with themes of identity, forbidden love, and political intrigue. Reality is stretched a little considering Rafi's age when the original traumatic experience occurred, and how he managed to end up where he needed to at the right time, but it works overall. Loftus does a wonderful job of immersing the reader into the period and setting, though I did have trouble in places keeping track of the multitude of characters. This was likely my issue and not that of the story. Rafi's growing bond with Edith, a gifted apothecary, is sweet and adds a little more emotional depth to a story already rich with historical detail. Loftus’s prose and research bring medieval England vividly to life, making this a compelling debut for fans of character-driven historical fiction. The Herb Knot  marks Jane Loftus as a fresh voice in medieval historical fiction. Like his FBI agent brother Nick, Theo Buchanan is devoted to his crime-fighting career. Unlike his brother, he works the other side of the desk as an esteemed Justice Department attorney and rarely sees on-the-field action—until he comes to the aid of Dr. Michelle Renard, a beautiful and brilliant surgeon in Bowen, Louisiana, who recently saved his own life. Michelle’s medical clinic has been vandalized, and the investigation uncovers a deadly ring of criminals bent on preserving their secrecy at any cost. They call themselves the Sowing Club: four white-collar professionals whose sophisticated crimes have amassed millions of dollars in a Cayman Islands bank account. The group is bound by a pact to leave the cash untouched until they accumulate a certain amount, but their leader, John, is distracted by and nearly bankrupt from his wife's grave illness. Knowing what must be done, John turns to his three friends to mercy-kill his wife, but the line between mercy and murder quickly vanishes. As the relentless and cold-blooded Sowing Club sets out to silence Michelle, the one person who has information that could destroy them, Theo confronts the lies, greed, and evil that bind the lethal foursome—and risks more than he ever has before. • Killjoy by Julie Garwood – Romantic Suspense Review

Julie Garwood's Killjoy is a romantic suspense novel filled with tension and passion, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. At a Glance Genre:  Romantic Suspense/Thriller Tone:  Emotional, gripping, heartfelt Series: Book 3 of 14: ‎ Buchanan/Renard/MacKenna (can be read as a standalone) Best for:  Readers who enjoy strong heroines, protective heroes, and romance woven into high-stakes suspense Book Review of Killjoy by Julie Garwood Julie Garwood’s Killjoy  grabs the reader immediately with a high-stakes plot and tension that doesn’t let up. The story balances suspense and romance beautifully, with fully realized characters whose choices and emotions feel both realistic and compelling. And I just love the big, strong, tough-guy hero. The hero and heroine face complex challenges that test their courage, trust, and loyalty. Garwood’s pacing is precise, keeping the mystery engaging while allowing the romance to develop naturally. The emotional stakes are high, but moments of tenderness and humor bring warmth and balance to the story. She also did a great job making me loathe the bad guys, like really, seriously loathe them. And she did a great job making me really fall for John Paul Renard, in the best kind of way. About the Book Killjoy by Julie Garwood (Retailer Description)  In this breathless new novel, Julie Garwood has written her most electrifying thriller to date. Avery Delaney has always tried to put the past far behind her. Abandoned by her rapacious, conniving mother when she was only three days old, Avery was raised by her grandmother and beloved aunt Carolyn. Then, when she was eleven, she witnessed her grandmother’s violent death, before Avery herself was shot and left for dead. Miraculously she survived. The man responsible is serving time in a Florida prison. This traumatic experience propels Avery into a life of law and order. Her razor-sharp mind and ability to gather data and decipher evidence has made Avery an expert crime analyst for the FBI. But soon she will have to use every one of her adroit skills on a case that hits painfully close to home. Avery’s workaholic aunt, Carolyn Salvetti, is certain her (hopefully soon-to-be ex) husband sent her the gold embossed reservation to the posh Utopia Spa in the mountains of Colorado. At first she is resistant, but then figures it will be a welcome respite from the cutthroat advertising business, not to mention a networking extravaganza. Plus she persuades her niece to join her for the two weeks of luxury and decadence. But Carolyn never makes it to Utopia. Under false pretenses, she is taken to an isolated retreat by a handsome stranger with a dazzling smile, suave demeanor, and the darkest of motives. His name is Monk, a hired assassin. Now, with scant clues and fewer resources, Avery must track down and save Carolyn—and outmaneuver a brilliant killer who is part of an elaborate plot of madness and lethal vengeance.   Get the Book Amazon | Bookshop | Barnes & Noble Thank you for reading and visiting Books & Benches. • Why We’ll Always Swoon for Slow-Burn Historical Romance

There’s something irresistible about a romance that takes its time—especially when it unfolds in the past. In historical romance, slow-burn love stories aren’t just about falling in love. They’re about waiting  for it. Lingering glances across a ballroom. Carefully chosen words in a letter. Tension simmering beneath rules that say don’t  even when hearts are shouting please do . (Like the tension in waiting and waiting and waiting for Anne and Gilbert to finally kiss in the Anne of Green Gables series.) From Regency drawing rooms to medieval castles, gilded mansions to gothic estates, slow-burn romance feels perfectly at home in historical settings —and we’ll never stop loving it. If you’re already nodding along, these slow-burn favorites capture exactly why we love this kind of romance: Mrs. Drew Plays Her Hand The Ghost of Greyson Hall   History Raises the Stakes In historical romance—across every sub-genre—love is rarely simple. Class divides. Inheritance laws. Social expectations. Reputations that can be ruined with a whisper. A slow burn gives these obstacles room to matter. Every delay has a reason. Every choice carries consequences. And when love finally wins, it feels monumental. This is why we love stories like The Letter from Briarton Park , where social rules and impossible choices make every moment of longing count. Longing Is Half the Fun Few genres do yearning like historical romance. A gloved hand brushing another can mean more than a dozen kisses. A look held a second too long can say everything. Slow-burn romances invite us to live in that tension —the ache, the anticipation, the almost. Whether the tone is tender, angsty, or darkly romantic, that slow-building desire keeps us turning pages long after bedtime. Few books capture that quiet ache better than Mariana , a romance in two times, built on looks, pauses, and everything in between. The Characters Earn Their Love Slow-burn romances give us time to truly know the characters. They clash. They misjudge each other. They grow—often shaped by the world they live in. By the time love takes hold, it isn’t rushed or convenient. It's earned —and that makes it unforgettable. The Wait Is Always Worth It Let’s be honest: the payoff is everything. After chapters (or entire books) of restraint, that confession, kiss, or quiet declaration lands with maximum impact. It’s tender. It’s triumphant. It’s the kind of scene readers replay in their heads long after the story ends. That’s the magic of waiting. Ready to Swoon? Slow-burn historical romance gives us rich settings, unforgettable characters, and love stories that unfold with care and intensity—no matter the era or sub-genre. If you’re ready to savor the longing, the tension, and the deeply satisfying happily-ever-afters, explore a few more stand-out historical romances. The Fur Trader's Lady The Rose and the Thistle A Scarlet Woman The Heart's Charge Happy reading—and happy sighing.
