What can you tell us about your newest release?
A Country Heart is a story about putting the past behind you and moving forward in order to find happiness. Alexandra and Rick both have things in the past that they want to forget, mistakes they don’t want to repeat, but unfortunately their caution in trying to create the perfect future comes at a price. Alexandra leaves her country roots behind in Georgia, determined that she won’t be like her mother and fall for a good ol’ country boy. She heads to Florida, ditches her jeans and boots, and won’t look twice at any man that even vaguely resembles a cowboy. Rick, on the other hand, comes from a wealthy Northern family whose values are based on bank accounts. Refusing to live that kind of life, he decides he needs a woman with a good heart, a good ol’ country girl. He ends up on a ranch in Florida and eventually he meets Alexandra. Of course, they both think the other is exactly the type of person they need to avoid! But the story is also about family, the non-traditional kind, and friendship, so there are a lot of people who are able to see what Rick and Alex can’t see. And eventually we all have to learn to leave the past in the past and look to the future, right? It’s all about letting go of some things, holding on to others, and finding love.
Why did you choose this particular genre?
I don’t know that I consciously chose to write romance, these are just the stories that develop when I sit down at the computer. I do, however, choose to write what they call ‘sweet’ or ‘clean’ romance, because I like the really sexy stuff to be left to the reader’s imagination. I like to write about the emotions, the romance, the passion, right up to the point where they close the bedroom door!
What do you feel is one of the most important aspects of writing a good story?
I think good, believable dialogue is essential to a good story. It’s also important to the flow of the story; no one wants to get bogged down with a ton of descriptive detail. I know when I’m reading a book, I’d rather hear what the character has to say than what the narrator has to say.
What story are you working on next, and what inspired it?
I’ve only just begun working on a sequel to A Country Heart. I’ve had a strong reader response to Kyle’s character; people seem to want to know what happens to him, which is wonderful because he became a favorite character of mine; smart, funny, handsome, sexy, and a heart as big as his native Texas. Starting out as a just a supporting role, he morphed into an integral part of the story, and someone who needs to have his story told. There’s a history there too, but it is something that needs to be left in the past or something that needs to be held onto? I won’t know until I get into the writing and he tells me. Although I start my projects with a vague idea of where it’s going, I never really know… the characters always end up pulling me in directions I hadn’t thought of.
What is the hardest thing about writing?
Finding more time. Of course, there’s never enough of it! And I’m writing all the time, in my head; driving down the road, in the grocery store, waiting in line… so, I’m constantly trying to jot things down before the idea is gone for good. Then I need some time to organize those notes… time, time, time!!!

“Thomas perfectly captures the electrifying moments of anticipation between two people undeniably destined to fall in love. These characters will stick with you long after the final page.” —Jessica Parker, author
Alexandra Declan leaves her country roots behind, convincing herself she could never love a country boy: There is too much risk that he will turn out to be like her father. She will find a nice man in the city or be alone, but she’ll have nothing to do with a good ol’ boy.
Rick Harrington, the son of a wealthy shipping magnate, doesn’t want the unhappy life he sees his parents living and will do whatever it takes to control his own destiny, even walk away from wealth and a life of luxury for the back-breaking work of a cattle ranch.
When they meet, they resist the natural attraction, each believing the other is exactly what they need to avoid. It’s not until their secrets are revealed and Alexandra stops denying her country heart that they have a chance to overcome the obstacles that threaten to keep them apart.
